Jeff Buckley - I Woke Up In A Strange Place Lyrics
Ghost calls to visit
With my keys in his pocket
Kisses in my mouth with his
Eyes hanging out of his sockets
My memories crumble
I was torn out like pages
From the book of existence
I woke up in a strange place
My mind a blur and some blood on my chin
I made a call for a blackened cab
Some destination was moving on in
I remember the words that you told me
How they come down so hard, so plain
Fate is going to find your love in a
I lied to my host i told him
I knew how far i could go
When i emptied my guts out
On his brand new stereo
Well he paid me to go upstairs
And spend a night with his friend
I never want to see my face
In the mirror again
I woke up in a strange place
Music so loud that i spilled all my beer
I met a ride in that blackened cab
Some destination was all that he had
Easy now, this car is speeding up
For my last chance, crashing to freedom
Fate is going to find your love in a
Glass of champagne
Sweat pours down
You're in the back seat sleeping
And she waits by the window
On an empty bed, weeping
The ghost guns the motor
To the land that he promised me
I guess this is the time when your
Best intentions become facts again
This is no song for the dislocated
The one you loved but it turned to be hated
Because the lies of the spirit possessed you
Because the eyes of your lover resist you
Listen now, you keep your aim steady
As your temple turns to kiss the pistol
Fate is going to find your love
In a glass of champagne
Fate is going to find your love
In a glass of champagne

I met Jeff's mom in Chicago close to 15 yrs ago. I gave her a couple of CDs from shows few people have. I hope she releases them someday.
Obviously, you are full of shit. Too bad, not true
I'm Jeff's 3rd cousin. Steve Buckley will verify everything
My favorite version of this song is from the Mercury Lounge show

I love playing this song- I went 7 years with playing (rheumatoid arthritis); over the summer, watching my niece’s band practicing, I was prodded into playing. It was the only song I could expediently remember! 😆.
Neat-o.
The lyrics , as i hear them , i am probably wrong in some parts , please do correct me if so
A ghost comes to visit with my keys in his pocket
Kisses my mouth with his eyes hanging out of their sockets
Memories coming under steel resistance
I was torn out like pages from the book of existence...
I woke up in a strange place
Music so loud it was spinning my vision
I made a call for my black damn cab
My reservations were moving on in
I remember words that you told me
They come down so hot, so plain.
Fate is gonna find you out,
In your glass of champagne
Love came calling as a counterfeit mistress;
Stealing from the pockets of a sadomasochist..
She's mouthing for her place like a tongue on crystal meth
Her cigarette smell, i can feel it inside my chest
I woke up in a strange place
My mind a blur and blood on my chin
I took a ride in that black damn cab
So miss your reasons, I'm moving on in
Easy now, this cab is speeding up on my last chance to crash into freedom
Fate is gonna find you out in your glass of champagne
Sweat pours down, you're in the backseat sleeping
And she waits by the wheel, her form, her empty pain, weeping
And the ghost comes from moment to the moments as he promised you
I guess this is the time when her intentions pickup, pass the test
Well, this is my story for the dislocated
You want to love but you're doomed to be hated
Because the lies of the spirit possessed you
Because the eyes of your lover resist you
Listen up, you keep you limbs steady as your temple turns to kiss the pistol
Fate is going to find you out in your glass of Champagne...
Full lyrics anyone ???
Was there ever a studio release of this? Absolutely beautiful song
What a fucking talent, sadly missed
They take the great ones
Still listening it..always in my mind..this is great music..great inspiration
Sweat pours down, you're in the backseat sleeping
This song is written about his dalliance with Courtney Love ❤️
no you dumb ass it isnt.
Jeff Buckley is my favorite musician by far who is ever lived I am 37 years old and that even means that I have lived through the 90s shit Nirvana Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and Local H don't forget about Local H
local H were so underrated man
God is dead and we have killed him if you want to know what that means email me and I can tell you what it means it's a lot less benign then what you thinking is
, I wish I could send this to my girlfriend's right now if she fucking hates me because I boosted to Hugh Mungus pills up my ass she hates me she hates me find me love find me love in a glass of champagne
this is my fave song from this album. One of his more frenetic tunes, much better than Eternal Life.
This song he wrote about Courtney Love , or his date with her .
.. I'm pretty sure he didn't go there as I have faith in Jeff as a man of good taste :)
weird things do happen :)
As John said... He was embarrassed to have been seen with her and rightly so.
Can't figure out why he didn't do a studio take of this song when he was in Memphis in '97
No. This was the Hard Luck tour of 1996, beyond the Grace tour. To my ears it sounds like something he would release during those sessions in Memphis
kevtruth No. he’d been playing this song since 1994. debuted this song on acoustic on KCRW, ‘94. it was an old song by ‘97. he was only recording new material at Memphis.
Uh no. If you're referring to the Man On The Moon segment in Jan. 1994, it's not on it. Maybe you can send a link or something. The first time he played it was in Dec. of 1995 on a New Jersey program called Idiot's Delight. Then he rolled it out in those early '96 shows down under, which is what you are hearing here.
So there is no studio recording of this one at all?
@Abdullah Nafees one hasn't surfaced - maybe in the Sony vaults but who knows
I enjoy listening to this song when I'm hungover from a night I passed out on.
Jimmy Page was in the audience and met Jeff after for the only time in their lives :)
And Jimmy was in awe...
I read about it as well. Bukley would have been solidified if he just had more time. People I hang with don't even know of him . Great music I guess it's just a thing of the past
@Zebbulon Gutierrez I saw Jeff (Scott) Buckley in 1995 at the Roskilde festival in Denmark. Pure truth. Changed my life. Terrible loss in 97...he was 33. What music could have become had he lived. We still have his passion alive in his music.
I have a very, very hard time believing this.
I don't know but I love Jeff I wish he could have stayed longer, I don't fall into the idea that this beautiful artist is no longer walking on earth.
I love you Jeff
"love came calling as a counterfeit mistress
stealing from the pockets of a sadomasochist
and she's mouthing for this place like a tongue on crystal meth
a cigarette smell that I could feel inside my chest"
He's referring to Courtney Love here .
interesting - seems like most of the lyrics I see on the net have a different second verse.
Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!!
"I was torn out like pages from the book of existence"...
Such a great lyricist!
The hilarious irony of mentioning arrogance in the same sentence as the gold-medal-winning arrogant pretentiousness of "you need years of study to penetrate true classical poetry" .. what an incredible load of bullshit! So how many years of your life did you waste 'penetrating' true classical poetry and where did it get you? It got you here. How does that differ from false classical poetry or true non-classical poetry? Thanks for the laughs though :D
Was hoping someone would have posted the lyrics, can't make out a few words...
Instead its just h8 lmao
Richard Cox right? 2 people fighting over who knew what and how Jeff was and interpreted things... insane.
Fuck all you guys. Listen to the damn song....
@Oliver Adam I think your judgement is off. I've watched the documentaries available here on youtube and Amazing Grace talks about how he was feeling the pressure to make a good album commercially by the music business, and supposedly his goal for the second album was to do something more heavy and raw. I think he was going through troubles just as anyone does when feeling the pressure of the business and such. Maybe he did have a madness, but we're all crazy in our own little ways. He may have been a troubled soul, but I don't think we can ever accurately depict his state of mind leading up to his death, since we weren't him, nor there to begin with.
eargasm (imo...)
@Oliver Adam
No, it's not that at all.
Genius is often mistaken for "madness"
I have this album and this song is on it..
@Aaron McCallion Track 02
@Aaron McCallion It all adds up.
WHICH THREE OF YOU FUCKS GAVE THIS THUMBS DOWN CMON
+Edward Baker They can run but they can't hide
This song. Just. No words. Jeff Buckley is and always will be a complete legend.
I honestly think the man was slightly mental. I mean, reading up on him and his story, he was definitely crazy, or becoming crazy, one of the two. But then again, that sort of thing goes hand in hand with creativity and talent. You gotta be out there to produce such amazing performances in whatever you do.
Oliver Adam almost certainly bipolar
Wait makes you say this
Mystery White Boy...top 5 live album ever.
Jeff absolutely tears it up in this. It's obscene how incredibly talented he was.
fuckin A
SOD profile pic, watching Jeff. Hell yes.
THUMBS DOWN. Kidding! I agree that this song is totally bomb.
favorite buckley song, hands down. HANDS DOWN
Thank you for uploading K...this is fucking IT. What scares me the most about this song is that if I listen really close I feel all of the close calls I've ever had in my life. Every single time ...
That is why I believe in fate...just not my time I guess.
He's a brilliant lyricist
torn out like pages from the book of existence...
A musician.
