Jay Brannan - Goddamned Lyrics

I'm marching to Zion
A camera in my hand
I hear people cryin'
Dyin' for this blood-stained land
The streets of old Jerusalem
Are lined with souvenirs and those buying them
It sounds cold, but I cannot see
How this theme park has shaped history

[CHORUS:]
Cause virgins don't have babies and water, it isn't wine
And there's a holy spirit maybe
But she would never rent a room with walls built by mankind
Mary and Mohammed are screaming through the clouds
For you to lay your goddamned arms down
Rip your bigot roots up from the earth and salt the goddamned ground

Stand in line patiently
To supercharge your rosary
Or stuff your prayers inside this wall
We once had God trapped in this great hall
But we've been cast out from this place
They say a prophet floated from here to outer space
Am I crazy? Maybe it's me
But this all sounds like mythology

[CHORUS]

Zeus was afraid of his girlfriend
So he swallowed her in bed
He bore forth Athena
When they cracked open his head
Her brother tried to rape her
Athena got away
And when his seed hit the ground
The grass gave birth that day
Now we all freely admit
This story's clearly bullshit
No one would lay down their life
Or start a war for it
So throw your stones and pray
You'll be rewarded someday
I hope it all goes your way
But something tells me
NO ONE'S COMING TO SAVE YOU
NO ONE'S COMING TO SAVE YOU
NO ONE'S COMING TO SAVE YOU
Save yourselves
From turning earth into hell

NO ONE'S COMING TO SAVE YOU
NO ONE'S COMING TO SAVE YOU
NO ONE'S COMING TO SAVE YOU
NO ONE'S COMING TO SAVE YOU

Mary and Mohammed are screaming through the clouds
For you to lay your goddamned arms down
Rip your bigot roots up from the earth and salt the goddamned ground

This song and its message is really something. Jay Brennan, you've got a gift that surpasses music.

  2. C.... M....

WE ALL FREELY ADMIT THIS STORY IS BULLSHIT NO ONE WOULD LAY DOWN THEIR LIFE OR START A WAR FOR IT.......

  3. J.... S....

Should be Farcry 5 theme song

  4. P.... M....

nah its saying that mythology isn't really adhered to like most of the religions are today there is a need to show that they are both the same thing that its to remember the meanings hidden within them "zeus bringing forth athena" as a concept like "mary giving birth to the savior or the word made flesh" means that these higher concepts are worth more than the question as to whether they actually occured or not

  5. R.... N....

    actually virgins *do* have babies.

    R.... N....

+Raquel Nuñez faith and opinion, faith and opinion

    R.... N....

NO THEY CAN'T! Have a reality check!

    R.... N....

@William Doubleu artificial insemination? Technically, they can

  6. d.... m....

I think your saying religion and mythology aren't worth war, and murder.
    I agree.

    d.... m....

+dakota manchette I could but wrong but I believe he points out the similarities between what we consider 'proper religions' and 'mythology' to show that they're both full of just as much nonsense as one another and then goes on to say that "there's a holy spirit maybe but she would never rent a room with walls built by mankind" basically saying that if God existed it would most likely be sickened by our behavior

  7. c.... ....

This is a powerful song, man

  8. C.... B....

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I just came across an up & coming musician that's worth checking out... Mikey Wax... Search his song "Love Always Wins". Really catchy.

  9. R.... D....

I love most of this song!  I could do without the mythology part of it, but I absolutely love the line "Rip your bigot roots up from the earth and salt the Godamned ground"  That's one of the best lines I've ever heard!!

    R.... D....

@Ron Dickinson the whole point of the song is that though there may be a god the shit that mankind comes up with has no basis and is down right nonsensical. Not only that but what was originally meant as a thing of beauty is now used to do nothing but shame and hurt people around the world.

    R.... D....

+Ron Dickinson The mythology is there to demonstrate that those myths aren't particularly different than the beliefs of modern-day Christians.

    R.... D....

Far different...blood was spilt on your behalf, all so He could be called mythical in return.

  10. e.... k....

    Wow...what a song

  11. M.... D....

    Jay brannan is an emotion

    M.... D....

Madi, so well said! love his voice and his lyrics strike at an emotional level I often fear to go. Jay is an amazing talent.

  12. B.... B....

He didn't say he was a Christian, did he. Moron.

  13. C.... S....

    great song!

  14. S.... K....

The comments under this video make me really sad. So many people are really ignorant and narrow-minded.

  15. K.... J....

While I may not agree fully with what he's saying in the song, I do agree that man has turned religion into some petty game. Ignorant teachings and biased interpretations are not what make a religion, it's for belief and creating unity within a people. He has a reason for not to believe in Christianity. There is no reason to fight, everyone.

  16. L.... H....

I love the tone of his voice and the rhythm... Still working on the meaning of the lyrics.. Nice..

  17. r.... ....

Well he doesn't understand mythology, but I love him anyway...

  18. D.... T....

Humans have made him to be

  19. D.... T....

I disagree with you completely. I think he is clearly saying that there is no God. He is also saying that people are idiots for fighting wars and killing people for God. He says "no one is coming to save you." I do agree with you on the point that my God would not want that. I believe in a God of LOVE, no matter the shape, color, religion, or sex, of LOVE. I believe in a God that wouldn't send his children to burn for being exactly who he created them to be. I believe in Christ as HE is, not as

    D.... T....

DeziRae Taylor, while reading your comment, I noticed you used the possessive pronoun, "my" to illustrate your point. All I could think about while reading it from then on was "whose God would declare otherwise against those universal principles we all acknowledge?" In my learned opinion, I feel this to be a part of the problem, in which the faithful perceive themselves to have a monopoly on said principles when, in fact, they simply do not. Apparently some things are just not self-evident, especially when it comes to a ballot box, by which no publicly-acclaimed agnostic or atheist could overcome the accepted prejudice while running for public office. But I digress...

One thing is truly self-evident and that is our ceaseless desire to control others. In doing so, we control language and thereby control thought; establish homogenized customs for appeal, conformity and validity in numbers; and use it collectively as an answer or justification to castigate, malign, or dispossess the "other" so as to augment our own social standing or those of our creed as a result...no matter the age. Timeless. Organized religion is just as dangerous as any organized mob, especially when it possesses the mechanisms which determine the lives of others.

This is not to say that you cannot have spirituality or believe in the divine. On the contrary, what true egalitarian does not readily embrace tolerance thereof? However, I'd also posit that the former of the two isn't monopolized either; whereas, the latter all too often consists of those with either no answers and no argument or delusions of grandeur...as if fallible humankind has preeminence over all conceivable life in the universe...a natural hubris associated to perhaps all religion.

  20. J.... M....

    Right on XD

  21. K.... M....

Yeah that is normally a "Christian" thing. Even my old youth pastor growing up has barely any knowledge of Lilith, or any other "mythological beings", and the impact they had on the Bible. Spoiler alert. They are all stories. That may not take away from the message that it is trying to say. But Noah and Gilgamesh had the same job, when preparing for the Flood

  22. i.... ....

No nothing makes you a "good" person, and it wouldn't be faith if it there was strong evidence.

  23. i.... ....

Everyone in the world is a sinner. If you commit one sin you are forever a sinner. The point of Christianity is that God accepts that and accepts the sinners anyways. Christians should reflect that love, but sadly we are human, and many do not.

  24. S.... ....

i dont lke this song. -_-

  25. A.... M....

His voice just calms me down

  26. N.... ....

    Beautiful song and meaning.

  27. e.... ....

My answer was directed at a comment....you can be spirtual and not believe in a specific religion, and you can be moral without religion.

  28. r.... ....

by definitions religions are man-made. Spirituality != Religion

  29. P.... A....

    I love this guy

  30. S.... ....

in truth, human nature is simply, terrible, take away our comfort, take away our food, take away our lively hood, then you have a base human, the most simple emotions and instincts, anger, lust, hunger, take away the things that make us happy, and that's all you have left, i hate to admit it but... it pains me that this is the case, but it's the truth...

  31. e.... ....

I find him very enlightened, hes against "man- made" religions and war.

  32. e.... ....

A really beautiful song, I hadn't heard it before and so true... Love it Jay

  33. d.... r....

    THE BAST SO FAR

  34. T.... ....

I agree fiercely with you with you, however, the smallest detail I would like to possibly add to your summary; People that are, not by their own faults or otherwise, ignorant to religion, yet preach as if they do; are just as damaging as the ones abusing religion for their own gain. Innocent? More than likely I think. But still damaging the beautiful thing that is the essence of belief. Religion in my opinion is not quite beautiful. The human nature to believe, Is.

  35. m.... ....

Did you even listen to the song?

  36. J.... Y....

    i want his pretty face

  37. s.... o....

And I'll smoke some pot in the hopes that he isn't. Lets see who is successful.

  38. f.... ....

I adore this song. My parents probably wouldn't but I agree with everything he is saying! Love him. Totally gonna go see him in a month! YAY

  39. H.... K....

    jay's songwriting skills ... spectacular.

  40. A.... R....

There's a reason he seems to be against Christianity, guys. It's not just that he's gay. He's said in interviews that he doesn't think his parents have listened to his music or seen his movie. To his parents, being say fits into the category of being a sinner. He graduated a year early because he was miserable and wanted to get away. Why was he miserable? His parents didn't accept him. Why didn't they accept him? They saw him as a sinner, because the Bible told them so.

  41. E.... A....

I pray for him & that he is enlightened, God is with us all...<3

  42. O.... b....
