Jars Of Clay - There Is A River Lyrics

There is a river that washes you clean
There is a tree that marks the places you've been
Blood that was spilled, although not your own,
For all of your tears, are the wages for things you have done

And all of those nights
Spent alone in the darkness of your mind
Give it up, Let go
These are things you were never meant to shoulder

There is a river that washes you clean
There is a tree that marks the places you've been
Blood that was spilled, although not your own
For all of those tears, love will atone

So, give up the right
To control the waves that empty out your life
Above wild skies
Are the rays that break the shadows we design

Give it up, let go
These are things you were never meant to shoulder
Give it up, let go

There is a river that washes you clean
There is a tree that marks the places you've been
Blood that was spilled, although not your own
For all of those things, love will atone

I know the world can turn in different ways
Most of the time, we're simply hanging on
And under the signs of how we all behave
We might find the place that we belong

There is a river that washes you clean
There is a tree that marks the places you've been
Blood that was spilled, although not your own
For all of these things, love will atone

For all of those nights, that you cried all alone
All of your tears, love will atone

@Mark Fletton.  Sounds like a problem of perception.  By looking at the wrong end of the looking glass you are inverting the logic.  By nature man is self-centered and prone to destruction.  The law of natural selection states that the strongest will prevail over the weakest.  God's message is one of redemption from this wrecked nature ready to depletes any riches for its own gain (I don't think you need any example of this, no?).  Therefore the message of the cross is one of Life, not one of eternal damnation.  Gnashing of teeth and everlasting torture is an allegoric illustration to let you feel what seperation from all that is good feels. But this is a path you choose on your own.  No help needed.  A powerful word picture that has obviously grabbed your attention.

All because of You Jesus there is hope for all sinners we will all see you one day ONLY JESUS SAVES! I love you Jesus Thank You For Washing Me Clean!

  11. e.... ....

What a lovely song :) Thank God for this faith and salvation. It gives me hope and peace everyday in this fallen, sinful world that I will be with God someday in heaven.

    If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there...

even the darkness will not be dark to you
the night will shine like the day...

Search me, God, and know my heart...
and lead me in the way everlasting.

From Psalm 139, some words of comfort for the heart.

@EhJayJC @EhJayJC And that's true in a sense, in that Jesus did perform the first Lord's Supper, and did Baptize people. But I think it was Man that gave them the importance they currently enjoy in the Catholic Church. I can find no biblical evidence that Jesus ever meant for these to be a tool for salvation, and very visible evidence (the tearing of the veil of the Holy of Holies) to the contrary... that He meant to show that we no longer needed middle men. We could come straight to him.

  13. a.... ....

@EhJayJC Except that God is not "in the process" of dispensing grace. It has already been dispensed, once and forever. When Jesus rose and declared victory over spiritual death, he gave us our gift of salvation. We need only accept it. He does not use the constructs of man (sacraments) to deliver this salvation. He merely waits for us to say "Ok, you were right, I was wrong, and I do need you." I guess that's where we differ. You say the sacraments were given to us by God...

  14. a.... ....

Catholics are no more or less Christian than any other denomination. In every church, there are people who believe that showing up on Sundays makes them a Christian, or that because their grandparents were saved, they are too. But there are Catholics who understand that God's gift of salvation is exactly that... a gift, free of charge, for an undeserving world. Not all Catholics believe that rite and ritual are the path to salvation. Most I know don't, in fact.

  15. a.... ....

God made salvation a gift for a reason. He made it unearnable because He wanted us to realize that we had to rely on Him. The entire need for salvation is a result of us wanting to do things our way. But in this one thing, we *must* do it His way. And His way requires that we rely, in faith, 100% upon Him to provide our salvation... we can't earn it, we can't pay for it. That's what makes it "mercy"... because we can never be perfect through our own power, and He knows that.

  16. k.... ....

Thank YOU LORD JESUS CHRIST for making "THE River that washes us Clean"..Clean because of Your Precious Blood poured out for us....I LOVE YOU LORD JESUS!!!
    `
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Youtube is a great place to carry on lengthy debate.

  19. c.... s....

@EhJayJC but scripture clearly states Christ is suppoesed to have that position not Mary, sorry for just jumping in to the middle of a discussion i have no problem with catholics i hate the divisions in the church but i do disagree with some of your guy's doctrines, would love to gain a better understanding of catholic faith though i grew up until maybe 5 in it and it felt very fake to me, but believe God uses all denominations for his glory and his church is made of all denominationsjust one.

  20. j.... ....

Catholicism; Or any "religion" must be looked at in the light of the Holy Scriptures. Is it Truth or is it false? What does the bible say? Without the Bible we would have no knowledge of God. Look at the Word of God and find a church that is grounded in the Word.

  21. j.... ....

I was a Catholic for 48 years until I began searching the scriptures and found that most of the pilliars that the catholic church stands on are not biblical. Purgatory, Salvation thru the "sacraments" of the catholic church, infant baptism, eucharistic transubstantiation, indulgences, lifting up of the Lords mother, prayer focus.

  22. j.... ....

Ephesians 2:8-9, for by grace are ye saved thru faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

The "gift" by the grace of God is FREE! As any gift is. You cannot pay for it, or it is not a gift! We cannot add to what Christ did for us. Only the blood of an innocent lamb takes away sin, and it's our faith in that all atoning sacrifice which will save us from the eternal fires of Hell. "Saved thru faith", by the grace of God.

  23. j.... ....

If you are Catholic, as you read your bible, compare it to the practices of catholicism, make notes... There is no grey area, it is either truth or false. Or if you cannot find scriptural backing for a particular catholic -- ism, then it is of man and not of God. Lastly, if you review the history (secular or otherwise) of the catholic church thru the dark ages, you may discover the reason why the catholic church prospered during this dark time of humanity.

It's a Christian song with catholic images. Obviously not the official video

  27. b.... ....

Look, Celitcpsalm.....I know Catholics seem to be confused, but is bashing a religion really going to help us in our walk with Christ? Does it help the lost come to him? No. It doesn't, people will think "oh they hate each other, doesn't their precious book say to love? Guess they must all be Hypocrites, who would want to be a part of that???? I think I'll go be Buddhist!" I'm not saying that's EXACTLY what they'd say, but it is a possibility. God excepts all people, if THEY BELIEVE IN HIM.

  28. C.... I....

@Celticpsalm Who are you to criticize the servant of another? Jesus is their Master, not you. Just because you can point out the faults of Catholicism does not mean that God will judge them as you do. I'd keep your immature opinions to yourself. Oh, and have you walked a mile in their shoes?

  29. e.... ....

have some strange customs and ways of doing things. Why do we need hail mary's? Also, I've watched a few services, they repeat a verse in a monotone voice. How does that do any good at all? A church service should be a teaching on the Bible and a communion among believers. They should be free, made up to suit the congregation. But some denominations do the same thing. No contemporary music, only old gospel. Why? God doesn't care so long as it glorifies him. There's more, but i'm done for now

  30. e.... ....

I don't follow the Catholic church, nor do I claim a denomination. I read the Bible, and I pull my beliefs from that and from prayer. Jesus intercedes for us, our salvation comes from him alone. The church is not a building, it is the people. A building has no power, it is the people in the building that allows for the presence of God in which there is absolute power. A church can be a patch of grass on a hill if that is where a gathering of Christians take place. Now, the Catholic church does

I thought this was nice music to listen to, did not know it was a debate blog! and thank you EhJayJC, feeling much less persecuted for showing up and will continue to save this listen to this nice song. Settle down. There is a lot you don't know.

  32. f.... ....

Might I just add that I don't mind images of a cross - or even "Jesus" on a cross - as they just remind me of what Jesus did for me out of love. However, in my school (I live in Ireland where nearly all schools are Catholic) we have a 2 metre tall statue of a cross with an emaciated Jesus on it, which is quite disturbing, hanging at our stairs. THAT I mind. Nevermind the fact that Jesus probably weighed a perfectly average weight and was not anorexic, it's really freaky.

  33. f.... ....

@bluetube01 Actually the word "Catholic" simply means believer, so they arrived immediately. However, I do agree with you that actual Roman Catholics are not Christians.

And the Jews being the first Christians isn't that important - I don't know if you meant to draw attention to that or not, it's so hard to tell over the internet - as we are all one in Christ, and previous religion/race doesn't affect that.

How gracious the water in that river is. How invigorating and freeing, how so much better than heroin or meth, longer lasting and more pure. How glorious the light that is lit from direct contact with this water and how sweet the fellowship it ignites within and without. My new drug which lifts me up without pulling me down!

  36. i.... ....

"But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus"
    Ephesians 2:4-6.
Sorry bro - I'm thrilled you're following Christ but I have to disagree - Christ suffered for us sure - but without his resurrection we are DEAD IN OUR SINS - praise God he is no longer on the cross.

  37. t.... ....

Ok, maybe not wholly unbiblical, but they do have massive chunks that seem to be, and massive amounts taken from the Apocrypha - which incidentally isn't considered Biblical canon by most because of the massive contradictions it makes to the rest of the bible.
