Janis Ian - In The Winter Lyrics

The days are okay
I watch the TV in the afternoon
If I get lonely
The sound of other voices, other rooms
Are near to me, I'm not afraid

The operator, she tells the time
It's good for a laugh
There's always radio
And for a dime I can
Talk to God, dial-a-prayer
Are you there? Do you care?
Are you there?

And in the winter
Extra blankets for the cold
Fix the heater getting old
I am wiser now, you know
And still as big a fool
Concerning you

I met your friend
She's very nice
What can I say?
It was an accident
I never dreamed we'd meet
Again this way, you're looking well
I'm not afraid

You have a lovely home
Just like a picture
No, I live alone
I found it easier
You must remember how
I never liked the party life
Up all night, lovely wife
You have a lovely wife

And in the winter
Extra blankets for the cold
Fix the heater getting old
You are with her now, I know
I'll live alone forever
Not together now

"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."
    Henry David Thoreau.

If this isn't the very description of "toxic loneliness", I don't know what is... This isn't a bad song at all, it's beautiful; but, it shows the desperation we put ourselves into when we attempt to evade our feelings... (Btw, I've had this album since it first came out in the early 70's)

Sampled this for some music and got curious of its popularity. Underrated is an understatement.

This song is way too short.

  15. S.... S....

Ahhh..I now finally hear the original, as Sheena Easton recorded this in 1982.

    S.... S....

wow did not know that...I have to pull up sheena's version

  16. J.... R....

A beautiful but painfully sad song - if I had a daughter I'd play it and say, don't waste your time with a married man, because life is painfully short, and youth shorter - and no one has that much time to waste.

    J.... R....

I agree...such a beautiful song so very sad to

In twenty years I imagine I will be listening to this song in my little bungalow, sitting in an overstuffed velvet chair with doilies on it, with a fire burning in the fireplace and my cats lying around. One will be sitting on my lap while I try to finish my knitting. I will smile to myself with utmost contentment and peace.

    H.... E....

    Beautiful. X

  18. R.... ....

Such a sentimental song,  but beautiful for a fresh snow-white day <3

I was 14yrs old when this album came out. My friends and I wore out the groves from playing it. She said everything I was feeling in my young life. Little did I know those same lyrics would continue to speak to me throughout my whole life as I grew up and came to understand their deeper meaning. Now at 54 dealing with depression and loss I'm listening to "In The Winter" crying because it still says everything that's in my heart.
