Jan & Dean - Ride The Wild Surf Lyrics

In Hawaii there's a place known as Waimea Bay
Where the best surfers in the world come to stay
And ride the wild surf they come to try
To conquer those waves some 30 feet high

Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Gotta take that one last ride

Surf fever brings them here to meet the test
And hanging round the beach you'll see the best
They're waxed up and ready just waiting for
The surf to build up on the northern shore

Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Gotta take that one last ride

Lined up and waiting for that next big set outside
Nothing can stop it 'cause you've just gotta ride, ride, ride, ride, ride
The heavies at the pipeline are okay
But they can't match the savage surf at Waimea Bay
It takes a lot of skill and courage unknown
To catch the last wave and ride it in alone

Ride ride ride the wild surf
Ride ride ride the wild surf
Ride ride ride the wild surf
Gotta take that one last
Gotta take that one last ride

Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Ride, ride, ride the wild surf
Gotta take that one last ride

Jan & Dean Ride The Wild Surf Comments
  1. W.... ....

I completely agree that Jan and Dean belong in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the person who said that they are in there is wrong. I've checked it. They are not in it but they deserve to be.

  2. W.... ....

As a young girl I went to the movie theatre with a girl friend to see the movie and I positively drooled over handsome Tab Hunter and Fabian in the movie. It was a great movie and a great song and to me it still is. Jan and Dean at their best.

  3. p.... ....

    Justin Bieber is an asshole.

  4. T.... T....

I am always amazed at the Wrecking Crew studio percussionists on these recordings of the era. In this one, the guy does the tom tom rolls up to the hits on the cymbals giving the effect of waves rolling up and water splashing while you're surfing. Instead of just keeping time like a garage band drummer. It makes the whole feel of the recorded song much more exciting. That's musical expression, so effective, and genius.

"Ride, Ride, Ride the Wild Surf.....Rid, Ride, Ride the Wild Surrrrf….Gotta Take the One Last RIIIIIDE..!!"

  6. J.... ....

great song and production with Hal's cymbals sounding like waves washing over a wiped out surfer!

  7. T.... A....

    Moondoggy!

  8. D.... F....

What a relief this is from all the drippy songs about broken hearts

    D.... F....

That's one of the reasons they were so incredibly successful. I really think the Jan and Dean period represented Hal Blaine's best work.

  9. e.... ....

Why don't they include this mono version on Spotify? This is the rightful way to hear this.

  10. W.... B....

  13. N.... J....

F-in awesome production...it's like they captured the sound of being totally wiped out by a rogue wave you never saw coming and you just get swept along by it all...and when you finally get up, you wanna do it all over again....

Heard this gem on kisn radio station Portland Oregon.today...

  15. T.... T....

This was probably the best surfin' movie as well, great footage of surfers, and a little genuine drama, and the song is just perfect.

  16. D.... F....

  17. T.... A....

  18. G.... D....

One of the first songs I heard when I was 10 years old.

  19. 3.... ....

Saw this movie at the drive-in the month it came out. From the back seat of my very young parents car of course. I was really lucky that my parents were so young bcuz they went to see all the cool movies like this. I was 7 years old and remember it very well. My mom was 23 and my dad 25. We lived in the center of the Hot Rod-Surfing craze, LA-Orange County. Since my dad was a scuba diver we were at the beach constantly and I learned how to ride the wild surf at 8 years old. Jan & Dean were my favorite singers. I always liked them more than The Beach Boys. I liked their personalities better and I thought they had much cooler songs. The Beach Boys never had anything like Dead Man's Curve. I saw Jan & Dean live 13 times and was invited by Dean to attend a special celebration with Richard Hatch and Bruce Davison in Hollywood at a small club. The last time I saw Jan he invited me to hang out with him and Dean and Papa Do Run Run in their dressing trailer. Two of the super nicest guys I've ever met.

  20. R.... ....

Not one comment on how Brian Wilson wrote this song ... shmm

    R.... ....

  24. D.... F....

  25. K.... O....

    It has everything!

  26. D.... ....

    Just an awesome song..

  27. S.... J....

    ....................................................................................check it out.....................................!!!

  28. J.... W....

The production on this track was a crowning achievement.

    J.... W....

Hal Blaine thundering all across his Ludwig Super Classic blue sparkle kit!

    J.... W....

@Wrongway Pete Yes, and now he's gone.

    J.... W....

@Larry Stimely Thank you for the news. So sad. He was born in my hometown and lived there as a kid. Always came back to give drum clinics. Never got a chance to meet him, though, to my great regret.

  29. b.... ....

Shelley Fabares brought me here---I love her as a blonde, brunette, redhead, ...... whatever.......! Hint: She was in the film and on the cover of the LP.

    b.... ....

How about Barbara Eden as a redhead. That was fabulous.

  30. j.... s....

Wrecking Crew were the players on this recording and mostly all the Jan and Dean recordings. drummers were Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer.

  31. H.... ....

Thumbs up if you hopped on you mom's ironing board when you were little and heard this song on the radio.

  32. G.... V....

Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They helped to create that California surf and hot rod sound while creating music that changed history.
They had many hits and had a historical comeback.
There are acts in the Hall that have not done half of what Jan & Dean have done.
Come on Hall of Fame, get it right.
    Include Jan & Dean.

    G.... V....

    agree!!!

    G.... V....

    They are in the Hall.

  33. L.... M....

    Love it!!

  34. C.... G....

Played this song over and over till I almost wore out the record.  8th grade know wheels to be had to make it to Santa Cruse, But one could still dream, I had my side walk Surf-en.

  35. s.... ....

Ride the Wild Surf along with The Anaheim, Azuza, and Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review and Timing Association is the reason Jan Berry was a musical genius.

    s.... ....

Yeah, the sequel to "Little Old Lady from Pasadena". Father Time was going to have to outrun their muscle cars to catch THEM! ^_^

    s.... ....

Ohh so THAT'S why he was a musical genius. Nice to have that answered finally.

  36. w.... ....

I have always loved this song from the day it was released.
