James Gang - The Bomber (Closet Queen / Bolero / Cast Your Fate To The Wind) Lyrics

When I became of age, my mama sat me down
She said, "Son, you're growing up, it's time you looked around."
So I began to notice some things I've never seen before
That's what brought me here knockin' at your back door
Oh, yeah

A closet queen, a bus stop fiend
It wants to shake my hand.
I don't want to be there, she decides she can
It's Apple Dan, he's just the man to pick fruit off your branches
I can't sleep and we can't keep this cattle off our ranches
Oh, oh... yeah

[Instrumental Bridge - Bolero - Cast Your Fate To The Wind]

It's too strong, something's wrong, I guess I lost the feeling
I don't mind the games you play, but I don't like you dealing
The cards looked bad, the luck's been had and there's nothing left to smoke
We'll all be back tomorrow for the punchline of the joke

Oh, Oh... Oh, Oh...

What a performance! The full length was incredible and live television besides. Those musicians did an excellent job. It got me wondering again why the Bolero was edited out of later releases of James Gang Rides Again. The original reel to reel has this full version, which is perfect, but the CD purchased a few years later has a poorly edited Bomber without the Bolero. I figured it was a copyright infringement thing. This is The Best and sounds awesome! Thanx!

That's all true the 71 K.C. Kansas concert... we were outside arena stealing 8 track tapes out of cars.

heard this one in 1967 and took up lead guitar...! Great album.... people!

James Gang fue un grupo icónico de los finales de los 60s y principios de los 70s poseedores de un sonido rock original y buena formación técnica musical. El bombardero lleva acordes del bolero de Ravel

this version is sped up, and to be honest, kinda ruins it.

    P.... H....

no it isn't sped up, i accidentally chopped 2 seconds off the fade out at the ending , which is why this runs at 7:02 and not 7:04

    P.... H....

Yeah, we sped up YOUR version so YOU could offer up a notable review. This is your future. Go with it.

  18. D.... O....

I love it when so called "rock groups" know what music is and can play ANYTHING!

  19. H.... H....

    Too good.

  20. T.... ....

A most excellent video for a most excellent song. Joe did quite an amazing interpretation of a couple classics along with his hard driving present day classic.

  21. P.... C....

Is it just a coincidence that Jeff Beck and Joe Walsh did eerily similar versions of Bolero /cast your fate to the wind ?

    P.... C....

No, pretty sure joe was a huge beck fan(he did a beck yardbirds cover on the first album) and the reason he covered Bolero was because he heard becks bolero.

    P.... C....

It's Beck and Page with a Les Paul sonic. Fan? Who cares? Still really good and the graphics provided make it more compelling and sad...

    P.... C....

'Cast you fate to the wind' was well known probably in the late 50-60's. It's well loved. Best work by JW with it's Beck influence.

    P.... C....

I have maintained for years that Walsh plays Beck's Bolero before going into Ravel's Bolero. Tonight for the first time I A-B'd them - comparing this to another vid of Beck playing his Bolero. It sure sounds the same to me, but Beck didn't demand it be taken off the record. Are you sure about Beck playing "Cast Your Fate To The Wind,?" I looked for it on YouTube, and their must be hundreds of versions, but if there is one by Beck it doesn't appear near the top (despite searching on "Jeff Beck Cast Your Fate To The Wind")

  22. D.... T....

One of my favorite guitarists. Love it!! Used to listen to this on the radio.

    Thanks Jay!

That's a damn fine trio, and some powerful singing! I had pretty good taste for a 10 year old! lol

  23. D.... C....

Michael,From the markings on the aircraft they appear to be US 8th Air Force B-17s. They were assigned the primary role of daylight precision bombing of Germany's military industry targets. These bombers could have been on a number of different operations but the end game was the same for all of them, bring Germany's ability to produce planes, tanks and guns to a halt, thereby shortening the war.

    D.... C....

It was a wonderful opportunity for the US strategically and public relations-wise - let the European and Asian empires pummel the stuffing out of each other, then sweep in and collect up all the colonial holdings, markets, spy apparatus, rocket scientists, etc, posing as "the good guys" and getting a lot of people to believe it for a long time . The biggest, most powerful empire in the history of the world, and it's turning to sand in front of our eyes. who could have imagined the Deciders could have blown it so badly in such a short amount of time?

  24. c.... ....

    Awesome !!!!

Killer tune and footage to match, very awesome, thanks JayX!!

    S.... ....

I second that! I had to share this on my facebook page. My all time favorite of Joe Walsh.

  26. K.... D....

    Great Video Man!

  27. D.... C....

The use of the WWII B17 footage is awesome. This is a great music piece and the video flows with the music really well!

    D.... C....

Though the music is really enjoyable, what does it, if anything, have to do with the aerial annihilation of women and children, German or any nation? Thanks for your answer.

    D.... C....

I once knew a B-17 pilot that flew 25 missions over Germany and I asked him if it bothered him that civilian women and children were being killed in their missions. He told me it did bother him but not as much as it would have bothered him if the Germans were bombing the US an killing our women and children. The only actual targeting of the population in that theater was done by the Germans and the British. They deliberately targeted civilians to break their spirit and their support of the war. It didn't work for either country as it only caused the survivors to fight harder and harder.
What I was saying since the title of the song is The Bomber the footage went quite well with the music, the editor choreographed it well.

    D.... C....

    Yes Dubya, B-17s not B-52s I stand corrected! You sir are a sharp-eyed, steely-eyed missile man! Cheers!-Tim

    D.... C....

Jerome Rochon - "Though the music is really enjoyable, what does it, if anything, have to do with the aerial annihilation..." -

If you happen to notice...in the title/name of the music piece it reads..."The Bomber". Ya know, military pilots who's purpose is to carry out orders given during war time. This historical footage showing a B-17 squadron on a bombing mission over Germany in WWII beautifully captures the awesomeness of the bomber squadron behind Joe Walsh's awesome music. And, jayX did an awesome job! Furthermore, Hitler had it coming to 'em! Need I say anymore?

    D.... C....

Я забываю. Кто начал войну? Кто начал убивать женщин и детей? Ах, да, Германия

  28. A.... I....

Joe Walsh at his best IMHO. He can't sing like Freddie Mercury or shred like Satriani, but with a bottle of Jack Daniels and a slide guitar, he is a master musician in his own right.

    A.... I....

+A I Neiss Walsh preferred Vodka.

    A.... I....

I'd rather hear this than either one you mentioned.. and I do like Joe Satriani!

    A.... I....

Joe is one of the all-time greats, right up there with Hendrix in the pantheon of rock guitarists from the 1960s.

  33. T.... J....

MANY thanks jayX for this fully-restored 'Bolero'. It is nice to get to hear the band's full and original concept for their song after all of these years. The visual to your upload is really great too! B-52s? It reminds me of a story from 'Hammer Of The Gods' when Led Zeppelin unwisely invited the matriarch of the Hindenberg family to a German performance/press conference/promotional/publicity event. Afterward they really wished they hadn't done that. She took one look at the L.Z. 1st album cover and nearly KEELED over! She filed a lawsuit 'natch ''to protect her family's legacy''. It was settled out of court(?). I guess the Hindenberg legacy had a happy number......Money really changes everything..... Life is what happens when you are making other plans and lawsuits are seldom good for rock and roll....

    T.... J....

+Timothy J. Horan What an awesome story! I never knew that about Led Zeppelin. Thanks for sharing.

    T.... J....

Hi Jonny, Que pasa? 'Hammer Of The Gods' is a MUST! Even for folks who aren't avid L.Zeppelin fans. Even for people who may not be rock and roll music fans! It's a good read and let me say it is wild, wild stuff! It's a page-turner and virtually unputdownable guaranteed! Cheers! -Tim

    T.... J....

Thanks Timothy!! I'm not even sure of the planes, the footage was found in a public domain library site...

First concert I ever went to was Joe & the Gang on a Sunday afternoon at Memorial Hall (seating 3500) in Kansas City Kansas summer of '71.  Pretty sure they played this.  I remember being up about as high as those Bombers & getting blown away by the music.

    M.... 4....

1970, I had smoked potbut didn't recognize "being high" and we drove I-435 all around KC all night listening to this album...now, I knew I was high!!

Memorial Hall will always hold a special place in my memories. Saw some great bands and did a lot of growing up there.

  37. D.... R....

Adam, Walsh's guitar effects & feedback kind of remind me of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun" except the song's musical aura seems a bit more whimsical, "Machine Gun" makes listeners feel like their touring through all 9 stages of Dante's Inferno.

    @David Roberts "

That's deep. Who's Dante'? What nine stages did that person play on? Drummer, guitar? Where's the recording? Do tell...

This medeley is one of the most inspiring out there.
I've really been missing the sound quality of my LPs and Marantz reciever with Pioneer turntable and Advent speakers..
It wasn't high end for it's time but it was great as far as I was concerned

    a.... ....

    Angelrocket -

Still have my Marantz. and thousands of albums (my brother and I).  He is a musician and works for Nielsen BDS here in Kansas City.  He has a 24 Track recording board and high-end turntables.  You should see his basement.  It is like this giant vinyl archive.  He "cleans up" the songs - does not compress them (they are the original analog recordings) - and he then copies them to CD's.  I get to choose my own playlists.  Getting new Bose 501 speakers.  The Marantz receiver still has the original solid walnut "case".   I am going to refinish it this winter (its nice but has some places where the original finish is a bit worn from setting turntables on top of it decades ago.  I am also buying an analog to digital "converter "box" so I can run tv and Youtube, etc from my wireless through it.

It is too cool.  A classic conversation piece in my living room. Guys are simply blown away when they come over to my place and see it.  And hear it.  The Bose speakers will just be the icing on the cake.

    Living the analog dream.

    Fantastic Viddy Edit !! :)

  40. w.... ....

love that part from 4;55 to 5;55, the haunting melody of cast your fate to the wind

  41. w.... ....

great double song by Joe Walsh and co--well done indeed

  42. E.... ....

I have to admit, I'm used to hearing it without the Bolero section, and I like it just fine that way. The Bolero seems a tad forced in this piece. The sooner we get to Cast Your Fate to the Wind, the better.

    E.... ....

Too bad you have no musical taste.

    E.... ....

That is ridiculous .... the long version is FAR better , I think he is totally relaxed on Bolero, as Joe always is

  53. J.... S....

Just saw Joe Walsh and Bob Seger at The Palace in Michigan...Joe rocked the place!!!

  54. D.... ....

When I bought the "Rides Again" album it was mainly for this song. But when I played it, it just seemed like something was missing. Yet I couldn't put my finger on it. I'm guessing that the radio station somehow had access to the full version of this song and that's what they were playing. Thanks BILLIONS for posting, now I can hear the complete song like I used to on the radio. Yea!! By the way, the radio station was WEBN in Cincinnati.

  55. s.... ....

    thank You for the reply!

  59. J.... F....

The year was 1970. I was 15 years old and the first time I heard this song was on an A.M. radio station KAAY, Little Rock, Arkansas. Absolutely blew me away. They had nothing like this on any Kansas City station. Instant Joe Walsh fan. I've probably worn out four or five James Gang Rides Again albums. 42 years later I love this song more than ever. I play it in my head note for note.
