Isley Brothers, The - Lay Lady Lay Lyrics

Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed

Whatever colors
You have in your mind
I'll show them to you
And you'll see them shine

Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed

Stay, lady, stay
Stay with your man awhile
Stay, lady, stay
Stay with your man awhile

Until the break of day
Let me see you make him smile
Stay, lady, stay
Stay, lady, stay
Stay, lady, stay, lady
Stay, lady, stay, lady

His clothes are dirty
But his, his hands are clean
And you're the best thing
That he's ever seen

Stay, lady, stay
Stay with your man awhile
Stay, lady, stay
Stay, lady, stay
Stay, lady, stay, lady
Stay, lady, stay, lady

Why wait any longer
For the world to begin
You can have your cake
And eat it too

Why wait any longer
For the one you love
When he's standing, standing
Standing in front of you

Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed

Stay, lady, stay
Stay while the
Night is still ahead
Stay, lady, stay
Stay, lady, stay
Stay, lady, stay, lady
Stay, lady, stay, lady

I long to see you
In the morning light
I wanna reach for you
In the night

Please, lady
Please, lady
Stay while the
Night is still ahead

Stay, lady, stay
Lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lady
Keep your shoes off, lady
Relax yourself awhile

Stay, lady, stay
Lay, lady, lay
Stay, lady, stay
Relax yourself awhile
Lay, lady, lay

Stay, lady, stay
Relax yourself awhile
Lay, lady, lay

Lay, lady, lay
Lay, lady, lay...

The lslety brothers have just left motown. This Bob Dylan cover version is a radical departure from the early style and the later soulful tunes they were known for?

    Yeah, loving this vibe!

  53. k.... ....

Cover of a 1969 Bob Dylan classic. The Isleys did a terrific job on this

  54. D.... P....

For some reason this entire album came to me today. It took me back to a time when life was oh so mellow. For those who don't get it the Isley Brothers took songs written by others and gave them back to them Isley Brother style thus the title GIVIN IT BACK. I can remember the times just by listening to this ALBUM. Thanks for the memories

    D.... P....

    Debra Palmer amen sister!

    D.... P....

    Debra....I EMPHATICALLY as well

  55. R.... O....

Wow I can't believe I found this song...I was born in 1989 and my dad was 40 years older then me and introduced to me this kind of music....many people my age have no idea what real music is...so sad

    R.... O....

Age got nothing to do with it, its what you heard and liked. How do you mean real music and why are you sad?

    R.... O....

True. I'm glad that I always had great music in my life.

    R.... O....

Rachael Officer I am glad your dad exposed you to this type music I did the same to my daughters keep enjoying

    R.... O....

I compare it to classic art. I love the 16th century Baroque period of art (1600's) Rembrandt , Vermeer, Frans Hals. etc. You are never too old to appreciate greatness or too young. Greatness is eternal just different perspectives from new discovers. You are wise beyond your years for recognizing outstanding music and blessings to your pops for introducing you to it.

    R.... O....

Rachael Officer, truth friend. This generation has been robbed of really great sounds.

  56. P.... M....

My brothers and sister use to give social if you remember what is it when guys and girls come together and see which club was the best in the neighbor. " Rest in peace" Nicki I was young but use to hide behind the chair when they slow drag.:)

  57. d.... ....

Have to admit, this soulful version totally rock and rolls over Dylan's.  That's understandable though because Dylan is primarily a song writer, not a singer.  Others have covered his songs better (Stevie Wonder "Blowin' In The Wind", Randy Crawford "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", Jimi Hendrix "All Along The Watchtower") due to the arrangement changes to fit their vocals.

This arrangement fits the song better than the folk version Dylan placed on it.  Listen to both versions and think whose "big brass bed" a woman would lay across. ;-/

    d.... ....

doc2skate You're right, although I do like Dylan's own rendering. ...and THANK YOU for mentioning the great and very talented Randy Crawford! A tremendous artist who never got her due in the USA.

    d.... ....

I agree but ultimately, I always give the ultimate respect to the original artist and writer. If it weren't for them , the song wouldn't exist for it to be improved upon !

    d.... ....

this is a processing, not my world, the original release on the disk is what I really like!
(I'm sorry if my English is wrong, but I write my comment with the google translator)

    d.... ....

    buddy guy did it best
    https://youtu.be/hP8N-eIaks0

    d.... ....

Dylan is primarily a singer-songwriter, although he's done a lot of great covers.

  58. P.... ....

Boy, my parents played the heck out of THIS song!  Then I became a fan (teenager in the late 70s & 80s.  Boy what fun I had exploring young love so innocently!

  59. A.... ....

Just sent to a friend. This song makes me think of those "lazy, hazy, days of summer." Thanks for the memories.

    A.... ....

Anjani....and then they hit us with "SUMMER BREEZE"

  60. h.... ....

YouTube is the best....I never thought I would ever hear  the Isley Brothers singing this song...

  61. s.... ....

    music at its BEST!!!

  62. U.... B....

This song always takes me back to a different time and place.

  63. E.... O....

Not often you can do justice to a classic!!!!

  64. R.... S....

    better than the original

    R.... S....

    Rudy Swartz
    the original was kinda depressing

this warms my entire soul especially after a beautiful night with my twin flame
    ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  65. m.... m....

    Just awesome this song...♥♥♥♥

  66. R.... T....

Never heard this long version before...Is this on the album?...I don't remember it being this long...Any way thanx for posting....

  67. T.... ....

@ vonham baby. I agree the original is great, but more soulful than this version, I'm not so sure. Besides, I prefer artists not suspected of being informants, so I'm gonna go with this one.

  68. v.... b....

Bob dylans will always be the best. This version is okay but i bet if they covered lou reeds take a walk on the wild side it would take on the same sound. Just cant top a classic by trying to make it more soulful, especially dylan.

    v.... b....

vonham baby bullshit if you had soul you would undoubtedly know how poignant they made it sound

    v.... b....

Vonham, your version, preference, loyalty to the originator we commend, however, Isleys created music, instrumentation and the fulfillment of this song, respectfully, honest and truthfully!!!

    v.... b....

FUCK THE NICETY S...YOU SOUND STUPID...ISLEYS WAS PUMPIN OUT CLASSICS WHEN DYLAN'S DOPED UP ASS WAS IN DIAPERS

  69. V.... D....

    LOVELY,,,,

  70. R.... ....

so greatfully much better than bob dylan.....

    R.... ....

    check out buddy guy versionhttps://youtu.be/hP8N-eIaks0

  71. R.... ....

wow....they really brought a lot of life to that dead ass song by bob dylan. the isleys brothers are probably the king of covers.

    R.... ....

    ROCKNROLLFAN
The lsley made this sound so much better. Agree

  72. B.... J....

You don't hear too much, it seems impossible to find the Isleys doing, (GIVE THE WOMEN WHAT THEY WANT)... Is it TOO Sexy??..Has it been "Banned?? Are you gonna post it?? Sexy, Sensual, Soulful!

  73. P.... G....

I love Bob Dylan, but this is THE definitive version of the song...

    P.... G....

this is the best of the old jams in the past bring back memories of the goods times real shit can't forget

  74. P.... G....

Ceelo could only hope to be half as good as the Isleys.

  75. T.... ....

It's never too late to discover good music. There's so much @#$@ on the airwaves. This is like a nugget of pure gold.

  76. g.... ....

I used to wear this album out back in the day. Absolutely fantastic album. I bought another one and ripped to my Ipod. Good stuff

  77. T.... ....

Pretty amazing cover. I love it when talented people cover Bob Dylans songs. It helps the uninitiated understand what a brilliant songwriter he is! This cover is brilliant for that matter. Wow!

  78. J.... B....

    I AGREE 100%

  79. r.... w....

Although Bob Dylan is 1 of the greatest song writers of his generation i think even he would pick this version over his so much more soul inner twined n this version. Ronnie Isley's voice is 1 of a kind

  80. d.... ....

Yes. Every song on this album (Givin' It Back) is a cover of songs made famous by other artists. The artists/writers are Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, WAR, Stephen Stills, James Taylor and Bill Withers. I always check out this music every Spring and Summer. Autumn also gives a good feeling. I never listen to this type of music in Winter. I reserve that time for Jazz, Rock and Fusion - lol

  81. T.... p....

I love the Isley brothers,is this album full of covers ?

  82. E.... O....

Used to get HOURS of listening pleasure with this one (and the whole album). Good memories.

  85. g.... ....

i love the isley brothers and i love this song.

  86. S.... ....

@KyplayaZ4lyfe ,.Appreciate the support!. Musicianship of this calibre seems to be slowly fading, so we all have to play a part and keep it above the surface!
    Respect also to Mr. Dylan!.

  87. S.... ....

    @soundhavens ,..Appreciate the love!

  88. s.... ....
