Iron & Wine - Kicking The Old Rain Lyrics

Before you walk too far
Watching the sunlight leave
Kicking the old rain
Down the road,
Teasing the rooftop birds
Laying some love by mine
Tired from laughing
Trade-in tears

Know that our world is always on fire
Always a quiet pile of stones
We all float away with birthday balloons
Sing with your teeth cross your heart

If you've been emptied out
Blowing the flowers round
Here comes another thunder hit
This wind is a welcome breeze
Ask if it brought a song
You've got a good one
From the moon

Iron & Wine Kicking The Old Rain Comments
  1. S.... ....

Always coming back to Sam Beam’s music at a changing point in life. Dearly listened, and always new.

  2. T.... R....

Excellent version of one of my all time favorites. Thanks!

  3. M.... L....

    Nailed it!!!!

  4. H.... ....

    Trapeze Swinger too sad ;(

  5. J.... M....

    Please, remember me happily
    By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin, the time when
We counted every black car passing
    Your house beneath the hill
And up until someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention
    [Verse 2]
    But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say
    That the pearly gates
    Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry
    [Verse 3]
And please, remember me that Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
    Our faces painted white
By midnight, we'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
And now you're lit up by the city
    [Verse 4]
So please, remember me mistakenly In the window of the tallest tower
Calling passers-by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate, just like the gates
    Around the holy kingdom
With words like "Lost and found" and "Don't look down"
    And "Someone save temptation"
    [Verse 5]
And please, remember me as in the dream
    We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Beside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
    Swinger high as any savior
    [Verse 6]
But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running
In circles around the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter
So bright, on cinder gray, in spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"
    [Verse 7]
And please, remember me seldomly In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turned from me
And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last", the clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
    Had an element of danger
    [Verse 8]
    So please, remember me finally
    And all my uphill clawing
My dear, but if I make the pearly gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around a frightened trapeze swinger

  6. J.... M....

I hate Pitchfork I love Iron and Wine. You could easily win a bet with me if you bet I couldn't listen to The Trapeze Swinger without tearing up a bit.

  7. J.... D....

wish the camera work was less switch angles every two seconds. also super out of focus, and the blacks are terrible.

  8. D.... S....

That is wonderful music! You all should keep that band together, forever! 8 )

  9. L.... M....

cinder and smoke ta na versão mais absurdamente linda q eu já escutei, obrigadaa

  10. C.... M....

I know others have already said this but it bears repeating. The performance of "Call Your Boys" is outstanding.

  11. A.... ....

his music makes me feel extremly peaceful

2 years ago I was working at Blue Bottle, and Sam Beam & Jesca Hoop came in and after their coffee I asked if I was doing a good job playing it cool about the fact they were there. Sam laughed and we small talked for a minute and he asked my coworker and I if we wanted to be on the list for their show at the Great American in SF. So, so rad, and Sam is such a great guy!

  13. P.... M....

Had the pleasure of meeting Sam Beam in Chicago. I worked at a design firm that was below a studio where he has recorded many songs.

I went outside for my usual cigarette and he was sitting on the bench and I sat next to him. It blew my mind because I was (and still am) such a huge fan of his music.

I did not however want to embarrass him or myself by coming off as star struck, so we said our hellos and a bit of small talk. I saw him a few days later and he shook my hand and asked how I was doing.

As an aspiring musician writing in a similar genre, I was thoroughly delighted in our paths crossing.

Part of me wishes I would have told him how much he inspires me, so until we meet again:

    Sam,

Thank you for making such beautiful music. And thank you for being so kind.

    Phil

    P.... M....

lucky encounter for you. I am warmed to hear that he was kind unlike many in the spotlight. I had no doubt that would be the case, but good to hear your anecdote.
    thanks

  14. E.... P....

    One year anniversary tomorrow.

  15. S.... ....

    what a beautiful video

  16. b.... t....

this version of Cinder And Smoke sounds like how I would imagine it would have sounded if The Kings Of Convenience had written it, right? Great song and great band!

  17. C.... D....

How the hell can 73 people "dislike" this? Sort your heads out folks.

  18. n.... h....

Trapeze Swinger couldn't have been better

  19. P.... ....

    OH MY GOD THE CHILLS.
Trapeze swinger live is a weakness that I cannot vanquish.

  20. A.... P....

    MAGICAL MUSIC. BRAVO!

  21. M.... S....

Is it just me or does it seem like the production was bad? The sound and video. The video looks like the room is full of smoke or something and the audio is just weird. You can't hear him talking in between songs unless you turn it way up. Other than the audio and visual being off, it's great...

  22. H.... ....

His music makes me very emotionally uncomfortable. That's why he is so talented in my eyes lol

  23. N.... A....

    hi, the name of components?

  24. D.... D....

Does anyone know the names of the band members. Specifically, the woman on the keyboard?

  25. W.... A....

    OMG. I love this.

  26. P.... ....

Fastest way to a 49:53 chills duration

  27. t.... t....

A singer as humble as his voice.

  28. S.... O....

    Thank you🙏🏼

  29. t.... C....

"Where the dreams in the backwater drown us far from home.."... Bless you Samuel Ervin Beam!!

  30. J.... B....

Call Your Boys - I can't stop listening to it. It makes me think of my father and it makes me cry. He's still alive and I'm a grown man, but the mere thought that my brother and I might have been disappointments to him brings me to tears every time. If your parents are still around, just remember that they won't be forever. We're all on limited time. Let them know that their efforts and sacrifices in raising you weren't in vain, but don't just do it in words, show them by making something of yourself. Show them by taking care of your family, being a loving father or mother. Show them that when they are gone, their lives as parents will have meant something. That's my goal in life, as important as any other career or other goal. :)

  31. T.... L....

  37. S.... W....

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE CHORD PROGRESSION OR TABS TO THIS VERSION OF MONKEYS UPTOWN?!?! I MEAN, IT'S CRAZY GOOD I'M IN LOVE WITH IT

  38. G.... I....

Sam doesn't usually need more than his voice and a guitar but the band really enhances everything. Damn amazing performance.

  39. L.... A....

wow.. love Cinder and Smoke version ❤

  40. k.... e....

He sounds better by himself, I don’t like back up singers with him.

  41. c.... ....

That's Sebastian Steinberg from Soul Coughing on bass! Nice.

  42. A.... G....

Listen to Sam’s Marc Marron WTF podcast. He is not only America’s best song writer, he is also just an awesome guy.

  43. N.... M....

    Summer Clouds.

  44. i.... ....

those out-of-key cello strokes absolutely killed Our Light Miles. It's nice occassionally and during the silence, but that scraping was just there the entire time, kinda disappointing.

  45. r.... ....

as a Frenchie,i didn't know SAM BEAM ....not very famous in France yet ! i received advertisement from taylor guitars.....they spoke about him.....and i've discover his talent !! I LOVE IT !! thanks to Taylor guitars

This version of Thomas County Law is better than the studio version :(

  48. A.... M....

I watched this with my girl and when he finished the last song, she turned to me
And said 'The show was wonderful
    But never meant to last'.

  49. J.... H....

  63. S.... A....

WTF???? 41 'dislikes' ........... some sad morons in this world

    S.... A....

Because they don't agree with you, they're sad morons? Some people like some music and others like other music, all taste are in nature and it doesn't make them morons.

    S.... A....

Not as sad as the occassional twat leaving comments like this.

  64. S.... A....

    Jesus, this is great music!

  65. C.... P....

I get the impression from watching this that the cinematographer had a crush on the percussionist, and wan't too fond of the bassist.

    C.... P....

Christene Pinter Now that I've seen it... Yeah... Lmao

  66. .... ....

    who is drummer?

    .... ....

Injib Han I have no idea who the drummer is, but I'm quite intrigued by her. She seems to be really feeling the music!

    .... ....

    Amy Winehouse.

    .... ....

    Beth Goodfellow

  67. I.... G....

This is really a bit special, only seen the NPR video before. Some busy fucking guitar and bass is one busy bastard.

  77. K.... ....

Beautiful and sensitive song.... i really liked !! congratulations!!!

  78. J.... H....

Great to see him evolve. Remember hearing him live at radio city hall in nyc. Still love his acoustic solos

  79. C.... W....

I was lucky enough to catch Sam in Columbia MO a couple weeks ago. He said the greatest thing I have ever heard, "Prepare to have your face peeled off, from the intense mellowness." One of a kind.

  80. P.... M....

    Second Paul Simon

  81. c.... ....

First time I heard and see Sam and his band, wow excellent, different, wonderful arrangements and better performace, I really like it. Thanks a lot

  82. R.... L....

Very nice, but the girl (2nd vocals) is sort of killing it for me. I like to hear some of Sam alone. The 2nd vocal should really not be through the whole song, and if it must, some of it should just be the same tune, as opposed to a complete 2nd voice. Earlier recordings with his sister was more balanced for me. Also way too much change to some songs like Cinder and Smoke. I hardly recognize it.I am not criticizing. Heaven knows I love this man. This show / recording is just different.

  83. R.... V....

Such a COOL concept! whath a great SONGS! kind of beatifull PEOPLE! THANKS & CONGRATULEITIONS. Peace.

  84. A.... s....

Through out the time and space, folk is so classic. Everyone wearing black and the background is white and the music is so grey to my feeling. Thats so good.

  85. D.... D....

This is pure heaven. One of best musicians alive today.. Sam you're voice of emotions.

  86. G.... C....

    Damn Tormond can play!

  87. N.... C....

I clicked cuz he looked like Giantsbane, glad i did.

  88. c.... ....

Just amazing. Thanks for sharing guys! Your music transcends me to another place. All is well in the world. Peace.

  89. M.... L....

    Love this!

  90. N.... ....
