When I first heard this song my first thought was that Jezebel suddenly seems such a beautiful name

I coldly broke up with someone about ten years ago. I've often reflected on that with some regret--not for breaking up, but for being so cold to her. She didn't deserve that. I really haven't thought much about her in recent years, but then a friend forwarded me a cover of this incredible song. The cover was performed by my ex with a brief introduction about a "broken love from long ago." I can't help but think she dedicated it to me. Is it possible that I've scarred someone so permanently?

Story behind the song

Jezebel is a figure of the Hebrew Bible, a queen who was the daughter of Ithobaal I of Sidon and the wife of Ahab, King of Israel.
Jezebel incited her husband King Ahab to abandon the worship of Yahweh and promote worship of the deities Baal and Asherah on a national scale. In addition, she ordered the prophets of Yahweh to be massacred and personally organized the execution of Naboth, a law-abiding landowner, after Ahab coveted his land. For these transgressions against the God and people of Israel, Jezebel met a gruesome death
—thrown out of a window by members of her own court retinue, and the flesh of her corpse eaten by stray dogs.

@mark west Actually Torah only refers to the Pentateuch and the story of Jezebel is in Kings, which is part of the Nevi'im. I guess you mean the Tanakh? Still, Hebrew Bible is the word academics usually use when they want to stay somewhat neutral when discussing the Tanakh/Old Testament. The term still has some problems, but it's the best one we've got, unless you want to discuss the texts from a specific religious perspective (or manuscripts that are not written in Hebrew/Aramaic).

I heard this song as I drunkenly walked in Manhattan at 3 a.m. right after I had broken up with the woman of my life... It brings back so many bittersweet feelings, I am drinking to it again. I hope you're doing amazing love.

This song is my life

In the Bible, Jezebel, a queen married to King Ahab, falsely accuses people of blasphemy and treason and has them stoned to death. She causes tons of problems for Israel (hence the lyric, "She was born to be the woman we could blame") and a revolt is formed to overthrow the house of King Ahab. Jezebel is thrown out the window by her bedmaids. A man named Jehu then rides down to Jezebel and stomps her into the pavement with a horse leaving nothing left but her skull, hands and feet. Jehu says a pack of dogs came and ate her fulfilling the prophet Elijah's claim that "the dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel."


Beam could be using Jezebel's story in reference to another misunderstood woman, or it could just be for misunderstood woman in general. Perhaps he doesn't buy into the biblical notion that she is as villainous as portrayed and that she is just misunderstood. The song is painting her as more of a hero than someone deserving of such actions

My girlfriends favorite song, makes me think of her whenever I hear it. I didn't like it all that much at first but when I saw how her eyes lit up every time it came on it became one of my favorites.

I gave the link of this song to my lover, and told her there was a time I wanted to name my future daughter Jezebel. She then shockingly said she also wanted to name her future daughter Jazzebel (different spellings). We have had a ton of peculiar stuff like this that make us smirk and surprised, but this one should be the weirdest and also the cutest one.

JamesofThames - honest to god I read that some where years ago. I use to down load this song on limewire back in the day, along with death cab for cutie and Norfolk and western. Haha I was like 16. But ya I swear I read that somewhere, that the song is about a pack of dogs who are grieving over the loss of their owner Jezebel. I don't remember weather or not she passed away or just packed up and left but it's a unique song in that it puts us in the perspective of pets and their love, idolization, and dedication to their owners. It's unique because it's true, pets do worship and pray to their owners it's really all they have and know.

This song is beautiful but the live version from his ultra rare Norfolk 6/20/05 album is one of my top 5 songs of all time. I wish it was on YouTube but, alas, it is THAT rare. Heart wrenchingly beautiful.

Listened to these songs on my iPod when I was training for marathons back in the mid-2000's. Can't run anymore (bad knees) but went back to listen to these songs and remember a really good period in my life.

For me, around the same time I was working the second job I ever had in a cafe in Edinburgh Airport. I was miserable. This song was extremely comforting wheneve I was leaving my shift on the bus.

falling asleep to this song is divine.

Sea & Rhythm is a great one by Iron and Wine to fall asleep to as well. I was living in Manhattan on the 31st floor of our apt in 2007, and when I would play this that song it was like I was sitting on the beach at the Atlantic. It was pretty awesome. I can still recall details of the apt, the vision of the ocean, and the music all mixed together in mind as one whole experience.

I think this song has a much simpler meaning than the Biblical story (even though it has constant references to it). I think it is the story of a man (the narrator) falling in love with Jezebel. However, he knows that many others (the dogs) want her, but for the wrong reasons(to put it crudely, sexually motivated), shown by "we swear we love you". Even though he knows this, he loves her enough to be willing to wait forever for her to feel the same way about him-"will the mountains last, as long as I will wait". The song is set when Jezebel has disappeared, and he fears that she has finally given in to the 'dogs', and has left him forever.
That's my personal view on it, as an atheist (thought I'd mention that due to the context of the song), and someone seeing the simpler and really more relatable side of the song. Anybody else see it like this?

that's how I interpret it. probably because I have been that man. unfortunately after so many wrong men she turned cold and untrusting. a different person all together. the dogs killed my poor Jezebel. And the world remembers her as a whore. I still have a different memory of her though.
