Iron & Wine - Arms Of A Thief Lyrics

Mr.Henry and the muscle man
Gave her shoes on a night there was no room to stand
And like a letter in a stolen purse
She was bored of her weight, she was bored of her words
The daughter of a soldier told the fallen priest
'It's a cold, cold place in the arm's of a thief.'
And reaching out to touch the steering wheel she said
'Leave me alone but just don't leave me here, alright?

Alright?

Mr.Henry and another guy
Gave her gold on a night that it fell from the sky
And like her body when the buzzard came
She was bored of her luck, she was bored of her name
The daughter of a lawyer told the fallen priest
'It's a cold, cold place in the arm's of a thief'
And dabbing at the arrow in her heel she said
'Leave me alone but just don't leave me here alright?'

Mr.Henry was a dying man
With advice in a tongue that she didn't understand.
And like the water when the sea got rough,
She was bored of the breeze, she was bored of her love.
The winner and the loser told the fallen priest,
'It's a cold,cold world in the arm's of a thief'
And holding everything he made her steal she said
'Leave me alone but just don't leave me here, alright?'

Used to run this on repeat in my dorm room in 07-09

  4. Doc Indomito

It seems to me that this song is really ABOUT something...
I'll elaborate, in a vague and referential way
-Shoes on a night there was no room to stand... (see "The Blues Brothers" When the Good Ol' Boys arrive)
    - The Cold, cold place in the arms of a thief (See "Doctor Sleep", when Danny meets the boy in the Braves T-Shirt)
-Leave me Alone, but just don't leave me here {See "Don't leave me here (Don't Ease me In)}- Henry June Thomas
-The arrow in her heel (Holy smokes! especially in light of the rest of the track)
    - With advice and Gun that she didn't understand (I sure hope I don't ever have to explain this one, especially since I seem to have misheard it)

    Anyway, dig through that.

    R Mull

Doc Indomito I think it's "Advice in a tongue that she didn't understand"

    Doc Indomito

I think you are correct- as I note, I seem to have misheard it.
Even so, it's quite something, isn't it?

  5. Samantha Bunch

Rob Zombie? Sure has gotten soft over the years...

  6. Talyn has time

Very haunting vocals with a tone of voice that would sound threatening if the person wasn't someone close to you.

TMT: I really want to ask you about "Sodom, South
Georgia.” ... If I were taking a stab at it, I would go the recapitulation-of-life
route. Especially the lyric: "Papa died while my / lady Edith was born.” It is
almost like death bringing about new life in a way.

Beam: Right. Yeah, that's definitely part of it. There
are several things going on at one time. Honestly, at the very core of it, it
was about hypocrisy in terms of racism.

  14. gilbert aguilera

    @Jazalicious o.O
well i'm not a hipster. i tend to think of myself as a one man wolf pack.

  24. Jazalicious

@thebecoming09 I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. I simply pointed-out that judging something's quality by its obscurity is the kind of thing hipsters are known to do.

  25. Deanna Lane

    @Dissitt jerk off troll

  26. Deanna Lane

@Jazalicious that was an absurdly trollish thing to say.
i meant that good music often goes unnoticed.

  27. Jennifersadreamer

I know the picture for the album cover is clearly supposed to be a picture of Sam but it looks so much like Jesus!..suspicious ;)
This song is beautiful; it kind of reminds me of his song, Jezebel.

    mtailgator

It's not Jesus, rather The Hermit. Which Jesus was one of for nearly 2 decades.

  28. pseudogenesis

    @TheHardflippKid Album's called "Shepherd's Dog."

  31. Beau McEvers

is the buzzard in the album name the same buzzard that came for her body?

  32. iseesaidtheblindm100

Bahaha, I love the hipster attitude that good things MUST be buried and never known by anyone else. Because everything good should remain secret in this paradise of modern day pop, right?

  33. Jazalicious

@thebecoming09 That was an absurdly hipster thing to say.

  34. James Yung

    i extremely adore it!

  35. thequeensofheartss

@thebecoming09 are you kidding me? This song is too wonderful to be unknown

  36. thequeensofheartss

@AFunnyJew not everything is about the quality of the voice anyone whom thinks so is very musically unaware, plenty of the best voices were the least talented all around. Sam beam is one of the best artists around today, with his "no voice" he writes some of the most outstanding lyrics, try listening to the live version of the trapeze swinger- he does have some Lo fi voice recording going on in this particular song but if you listen to later iron & wine recordings his voice is more expansive.

  37. TROLLMASTERGENERAL

@thebecoming09 i dont know its kinda weird I hate all the stuff that popular now to but this guy has no voice

  38. TROLLMASTERGENERAL

    @AppleCopasetic monotone singing

  39. Deanna Lane

this song is too wonderful to be well known

  40. Swingfinger

Definitely one of his best B sides... up there with Kingdom of Animals

  41. LittleMissMerry
