Iron Maiden - Paschendale Lyrics

In a foreign field he lay
Lonely soldier, unknown grave
On his dying words he prays
Tell the world of Paschendale

Relive all that he's been through
Last communion of his soul
Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you 'bout his years

Laying low in a blood filled trench
Kill time 'til my very own death
On my face I can feel the falling rain
Never see my friends again

In the smoke, in the mud and lead
Smell the fear and the feeling of dread
Soon be time to go over the wall
Rapid fire and end of us all

Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
Lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
Battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
Be reunited with my dead friends soon

Many soldiers eighteen years
Drown in mud, no more tears
Surely a war no-one can win
Killing time about to begin

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

The bodies of ours and our foes
The sea of death it overflows
In no man's land, God only knows
Into jaws of death we go

Crucified as if on a cross
Allied troops they mourn their loss
German war propaganda machine
Such before has never been seen

Swear I heard the angels cry
Pray to god no more may die
So that people know the truth
Tell the tale of Paschendale

Cruelty has a human heart
Every man does play his part
Terror of the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still

I stand my ground for the very last time
Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go

Blood is falling like the rain
Its crimson cloak unveils again
The sound of guns can't hide their shame
And so we die on Paschendale

Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
Running straight at cannon fire
Running blind as I hold my breath
Say a prayer symphony of death

As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
I choke a cry but no-one hears
Feel the blood go down my throat

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

See my spirit on the wind
Across the lines, beyond the hill
Friend and foe will meet again
Those who died at Paschendale

I think this song is more about music than the topic. You don't even have to understand the words.Maiden has always written songs about war but not politics.🤔🤨

Remember people, while the song is spelled Paschendale, in reference to the battle, it's spelled "Passchendaele", and in reference to to modern town, it's spelled "Passendale".

I'm not sure where the band got their spelling from, but it's incorrect when referencing either subject.

they were ALL, kids. in their 18's to 20's. a corrupted generation condemned to two bloody wars

  16. thosava

Does a more poetic and tragic war song exist? I don't think so. So much buildup for the charge and it's all over in four lines:
"As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
I choke a cry but no one hears
Feel the blood go down my throat"
So fitting for the western front where people were literally slaughtered by machine gun fire.

Next time you want to invade a country, just politely ask them for their land, instead of starting a war and ending lives of millions

    Face McShooty

Joseph Stalin did that to Finland. They refused. Stalin invaded anyway.

They say theres no glory or honor in war, but I dont agree. Theres great honor and much to be said about a man who's willing to make that sacrifice for what he believes. And as for glory, well... you and I weren't at pachendale, and WE dont have an iron maiden song written about us

There are way too many fucking music snobs in the comments, yes it’s a good song, stop acting like you have some high quality taste for liking Iron Maiden just to shit on other people’s music. Iron Maiden started as a counter culture metal group, and all you assholes who act like your so much better because you listen to Iron Maiden can kiss my shiny metal ass

  31. Sandesh Bhalke

I came across the comments and all these folks are talking about their grandfathers being in the war. I cant express how weird and realistic all of that feels at the same time to me. This is why we need to preserve music like this. Music captures memories of people long gone.

Fighting to keep the world safe for politicians. When will we all wise up? As the great Richard Cobden said, “Peace will come to earth when the people have more to do with each other and governments less.” He said this in the 1800s. Anyway, great song.

My Great Grandfather, Erwin Müller was rifleman in this battle. He died on October 22nd, 1917. He charged the French lines with his platoon, bayonets fixed. They all got cut down by machine guns. In the end, he was another body, but to me, he was a hero

  64. Jay Golden

Greatest Iron Maiden song to me

  65. Palace Of Wisdom

In a better world, this would be mainstream while the current top 40 junk would be mocked. Imagine reading the lyrics of this song to boomers who think it's empty noise.

  68. Ian Attaway

  69. Do what you must, I have already won

A few years back I drove through the Benelux fields towards Germany. I slowly realized I was driving through time and by the grace of God I avoided having to take part in the most obscene slaughter Europe has known. Guys and girls I can very happily have a beer with in a pub would have fought me to the death. I am a peaceful man and the idea of such inhuman slaughter is a crime. An utter crime.

  70. Farncisco Miguel González Pando

  71. Terry Gum

My Grandfather was in WW1 trenches and Tanks and dispatch rider, in the Somme, although not in Paschendale as far as I know. He was/is a medium, he gives total respect to Iron Maiden for remembering this and writing about this so articulately, really summing up the total horror of everything my Grand father went through. He hardly ever talked about his experiences, too horrific to talk about, but I can appreciate it all here. He passed to the higher planes of spirit in 1982. RIP

  72. snoproblem

This song and "These Colours Don't Run" delivers a one-two punch to the heart around this time of year, what with Remembrance Day nearing.

Passchendaele vs The Price Of A Mile = Iron Maiden vs Sabaton HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM WHAT TO CHOOSE??? I go with sabaton but the iron maiden is just a bit just a tiny bit worse
edit: of course that's just my opinion

  78. Mango Tree

    step1: Start laptop.

    step3: Play the song.
step4: Go back to step2. (Loop continues whole day)

  80. Mr Perry

Who else feels the intro riff in their throat wtf

  81. Ricardo Marquez

5:14 that solo of Adrian Smith is so, So fuckin Sickness

  82. Erik Dee Fullmer

I believe it's spelled Passchendaele unless there are two ways of spelling it

    Erik Dee Fullmer

Is there a reason Iron Maiden spelled it Paschendale? I can't imagine them accidentally spelling it wrong

    Helldog_spawn Entertainment

@Erik Dee Fullmer As the song is written from the perspective of a British soldier, they might have spelled it the way the British soldiers spelled it in their documents, which would mean THEY got it wrong and Iron Maiden was demonstrating it as such.

That's a very slim possibility, though, and it's more than likely they got it wrong somehow.

  83. Julie Gogola

I had read that Adrian Smith had written most or all of the lyrics for this song. I am SURE that Steve Harris also contributed. This song is very good, it takes you "there" to the battle field.

  84. Cam Snyder

Probably gonna piss some people off but I don’t care. Sabatons vocals don’t have shit on Maiden

  85. Teddy Malfoy

This cover art is not Derek's, is it?

  86. Susan Moran

I feel sorry for those who died in this blood bath. And why did it happen? your guess is as good as mine.

    Helldog_spawn Entertainment

It started with Gavrilo Princip, an assassin aligned with Young Serbia and armed by the Black Hand, who killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary during his time in Sarajevo. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia as a result, and their allies started declaring war one after another. What followed, as far as I can guess, were the countries that barged in on the war deciding this was an opportune time to test their newest military technology on innocent lives, and what resulted was one of the most gruesome wars humanity had ever seen, one where the soldiers felt nothing but dread, where no country gaining any ground. In the end, the soldiers fought and died, not even knowing that the real reason for their battle was - if _anything_ - just a game of death, where they were the unwitting pieces at play.

It's truly one of the saddest, most depressing stories in human history. And it was all for nothing.

It kept raining for a few months there feet were wet and suffering and they got bad infection in there feet and they had to go to trench to another trench and that's it because my grandpa said he didn't want to talk about it because it was a really scary he's has bad dream so he screams every while he sceams

  92. Giulia Lennon

I love the quiet at the beginning and at the end in iron maiden songs.. I falling in love with them all the time <3

  93. Marsiplier

Did anybody besides me notice they spelled Passchendaele, Paschendale?

  94. Martin Falk

Damn what wouldn't I pay for a tour based on the 00s material. You can find so much mindblowing stuff on those albums. The classic stuff is... well... classic. But from a musical standpoint, I think the modern albums throws the old ones through the window
