Icehouse - The Kingdom Lyrics

One of those days
that just comes and goes
it's not so special
she watches the birds
that rest on a ledge
outside her room
the wallpaper old and faded
a crack in the window pane
the radio just keeps playing
playing that same old song.

She smiles to herself
"they think that I'm strange...
...they say I'm a dreamer
...but I don't complain,
though I don't have much
to call my own."
and she's not a movie star, no
and she's not a beauty queen
she'll tell you it doesn't matter
'cause she's not the only one
she says,

"I know a place
where I keep the best of things
I'm not gonna wait
for my piece of heaven.
Where there's a road
it leads to the promised land
I just turn the key
the key to the
...kingdom..."

She stares at the page
of a new magazine, the morning papers
she walks into town
and catches a show
if she can find the time
and she's not a movie star, no
and she's not a beauty queen
she'll tell you it doesn't matter
'cause she's not the only one.
she says,

"I know a place
where I keep the best of things
I'm not gonna wait
for my piece of heaven
where there's a road
it leads to the promised land
I just turn the key
the key to the
...kingdom..."

One of their best songs! Really captures the whole feel of their "Man of Colours" album. But what is it about? I think we are supposed to draw our own conclusions. It sounds like the woman could easily feel bad for not being beautiful or wealthy ("she's not a beauty queen"... "wallpaper old and faded"), but she has learned to survive and be happy by enjoying life's simple pleasures (going for a walk and catching a movie) and also being grateful for what she has. I like to imagine that the "Kingdom" was the name of the movie theater she went to? And that it became a "place where I keep the best of things", and "where there's a road that leads to the promised land". Maybe movies were her way of finding joy and getting out of the house, because she said, "I'm not gonna wait for my piece of heaven." Anyone else have theories about the song's meaning? Thanks, Iva for such an amazing song!!

I have this on vinyl. when I listen to it I become very sad , as the best years of my life were listening to this band and others from the 80 s as we zoomed around in our cars , and went to parties and met girls , and did not have a worry in the world. Back then it seemed like we all had so much time on our hands to do things .

  28. Y.... ....

    Y.... ....

That was worth the time it took for me to translate it. Well said.

    This and Man of Colours

    d.... ....

djhansen021 in this Man of Colours Icehouse studio album there are 6 good songs besides The Kingdom.
My favorite Icehouse songs from this Man of Colours are Crazy, Electric Blue, My Obsession, Heartbreak Kid.

    d.... ....

Me too - seen them live 3 times in the last year - They drop this track sometimes from the gigs & do some covers of T-Rex :(

    d.... ....

    @Sandor B What's wrong with Sunrise? Lol

  38. Z.... F....

You can get lost in this song -- a true masterpiece!  One of the most unusual songs I've ever heard; no one makes music like this anymore.  Evokes true emotion.

    Z.... F....

    ditto! :-)

    Z.... F....

    Just love it. I agree..it's a masterpiece!

    Z.... F....

Well said. Most classics do not conform to any known format. Meat Loaf by way of Jim Steinman and Freddy Mercury and the lads from Queen understood this better than most!

  39. D.... J....

A fantastic track from one of the most underrated albums of the 80's!
