Iced Earth - Hold At All Costs (July 2, 1863) Lyrics
Just a mile or so away
Lives my dearest friend in this world.
He wears the Blue and I the Grey
And god it hurts me so
The last time we were together
If I ever draw my sword on you
May the good lord strike me dead.
The union flank's in trouble
To the round top on the double
A bad decision, insubordination
Exposed our line in a dangerous way
The burden lies upon us
Surrender is not an option
The union crumbles, We could lose the war!
Down below's the carnage
The rebel's charging onward
Push the slaughter forward the Peach Orchard.
Through the Wheat Field and Devil's Den
The valour of the Texans
And Alabama's best men
They're unrelenting and devastating
The last full measure of devotion's clear.
[Chorus:]
We know what we're made of.
When up against all odds we hold our line
For the cause that we so love
We must hold at all cost
We know what we're made of
when our nation needs us we'll stay the course
for the union we so love
We must hold at all costs!
Wave after wave they're coming
Their power must be waning!
We're out of ammo, we can't fall back, no!
One desperate measure, a means to end
On their next wave we charge them
There is no other option
Disconcert them, force submission
On my command, fix bayonets!
[Chorus:]
We know what we're made of.
When up against all odds we hold our line
For the cause that we so love
We must hold at all cost
We know what we're made of
when our nation needs us we'll stay the course
for the union we so love
We must hold at all costs!
[Chorus:]
We know what we're made of.
When up against all odds we hold our line
For the cause that we so love
We must hold at all cost
We know what we're made of
when our nation needs us we'll stay the course
for the union we so love
We must hold at all costs!

"on my command, fix bayonets!!" always gives me goose bumps

I know this comment is a year old, but it's back on Spotify.
Ripper rocked this album!
Donnie Wolter as a Barlow fan. I agree
I love this song!
I'm crying.
I've loved this album, particularly the gettysburg CD part of it, for over ten years now.
It's inspired me to read about the civil war, it's major battles, figures such as general Lee etc.
Very sad that some people want to forget history and bury it instead of trying to learn from it.
These songs are racist. We need to tear them down.
The trend with censoring and tearing down statues in order to edit history is sad and misguided. And yeah, it has to stop before it spreads into other mediums of art and knowledge as well.
Mauku this album wasnt funded by taxpayers and the "historic statues" you defend were erected durring Jim Crowe and the civil rights movement to say "fuck you" to black people. You can teach history without memorializing people in stone with tax dollars from citizens whos family were subjected to their cruliety.
Greg Hurst Yeah, like that evil Revolutionary War general! And other people who had significant cultural and historical importance to the area their statue is in.
Greg Hurst
Sure but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to tear them down and rename everything. If you have a statue of a racist then ask this: first was this person from a time where racism was the norm of their time/did they live in a time where morality hadn’t developed enough to see the obvious immortality of racism, slavery etc? If yes then look past that to see what good they did. Statues of Sam Houston for example are everywhere in Texas because he was like our George Washington. We aren’t praising the fact he held slaves, but rather the fact that he led Texas to Victory and also lead us during our period as an independent republic.
But even if the statue is about someone bad and the statue was put up to celebrate what was bad about them, then it’s still a reminder. Some may not know they existed and may look up facts and information about who they were and what they did. Statues and names are not simply a way of praising someone, they’re a way of making sure they aren’t forgotten. They don’t necessarily keep that legacy clean they just keep remembered.
Eric Bugenhagen brought me here
Same here!

Wonderfull and epic song...
The only band that doesn't need words. They would be epic to do an album with no lyrics called Speecheless man.
this can't be real. it's too epic. surely i'm just hallucinating this music.
I went to this tour it was fucking epic. Schaffer came out dressed in a confederate uniform.

Holy fuckin Schaffer
"He wears the Blue and I the Gray..." The Blue is Winfield Scott Hancock and the Gray is Lewis Armistead. Lewis was mortally wounded at Gettysburg. When he went down from his wounds he gave the Freemason sign for help and two Unionist Masons ran up and pulled him off the field. Armistead died before Hancock could get to his friend's side.
Now I understand why Battleground Cigar company uses Armistead as a masonic mascot. History is fun!

Scarab Assassin free mason was a guild with esoteric knowledge. Albert pike was a confederate soldier and was a key member in founding the free Masonry in the United States at the time but it’s hard to say if they believed in luciferian teaching hard to say. But research it
Scarab Assassin but in the modern world free masonry has taken a dark side with satanic symbolism and satanic teaching but it’s such a dee rabbit hole. I love the south but sometimes get thought that this was orchestrated to destroy the south sovereignty
Completely masterful first minute, but man. After that is a huge let down.

"The Glorious Burden", this old man put's this album in his top 20 and I have a lot of stiff competition in there; Lizzy, Skynyrd, etc...I.E. hasn't done anything any better since this offering.
History + metal = pretty friggin cool!
My guess is that you've never heard of Sabaton then.
