Iced Earth - High Water Mark (July 3, 1863) Lyrics

[1. Cannonade/Intro]

[Instrumental]

[2. The Burden of Command]

[Lee:]
"It Was Very Close Yesterday
I Thought For Sure They Would Break
But This Attack That I Have Planned
A Massive Strike Across Open Land
In The Center They Will Break (Will They Break?)
Plan it well, everything's at stake
We'll Hit 'Em Hard, Not A Silent Gun
Before The Infantry's Begun.

Execute It Well, We Risk Everything.
It's In God's Hands Now."

[Longstreet:]
"General Lee I Must Tell You Straight
That I Believe This Attack Will Fail.
No 15,000 Men Ever Made
Will Overtake That Ridge Today.
A Mile Charge Over Open Ground
With Yankee Cannon Gunnin' Us Down."

[Lee:]
"We Do Our Duty, We Do What We Must
And In My Plan You Will Trust."

(Thousands Die On This Day)
"Execute It Well, We Risk Everything.
It's In God's Hands Now."

[3. The Last Full Measure]

The Rebel Cannon Break The Silence
150 Guns Make Up Their Cannonade

They Must Destroy The Union Center
Before The Infantry Can Launch Their Grand Assault

The Yankees Are Returning Fire
(The Earth Shakes Violently)
In Washington D.C. Lincoln Feels The Earth Shake

What Happens Here This Day
The Fate Of This Nation
In The Balance It Will Hang
Consumed With The Pain
The Courage Of The Blue
The Valor Of The Grey
So Very Sad But True
Consumed With The Pain

The Virginians Are The Chosen
In Wait Behind The Trees On Seminary Ridge

Longstreet's Slow To Give The Order
The Lines Emerge, A Mile, 15,000 Men

The Charge Begins In All Its Grandeur
(To The Copse Of Trees)
For Many Of These Men They Know It Is Their Last

The Slaughter Now Ensues
Bodies Fall Like Rain
They Valiantly Pursue
Yet Doomed To Remain
At The Double Quick They Charge
The Canister Rips Through Them
To The Mouth Of hell They March
Glory, The Only Gain

[4. Charge!!]

[Armistead:]
"We're almost there, my boys
I've Never Served With Finer
We Must Push Forward Boys
And Bayonet The Yankee Tyrants
To The Copse Of Trees We Charge
To Crush The Union Center
And When They Turn And Run
An Open Road Leads Us To Freedom"

[5. The Melee]

[Lee:]
"It's Over Now, We Are Retreating
I Never Thought That We'd Be Beaten
All This Blood Is On My Hands
The Thousands Dead Due To My Plan
I am responsible, all of this is my fault
I Thought Us Invincible
Is This God's Will After All?
I Look Across This Blood Soaked Land
All This Blood Is On My Hands
God Forgive Me, Please Forgive Me
It's All My Fault, The Blood Is On My Hands"

Iced Earth High Water Mark (July 3, 1863) Comments
  1. V.... 3....

This song is phenomenal, from beginning to end. It has stood the test of time. Thank God for Iced Earth in the 90’s and 2,000’s! What an amazing album for the metal fan, and the history buff!!!

  2. M.... T....

    love this song!

  3. M.... B....

I like both IE albums with Ripper. He fits to them perfectly.

  4. M.... ....

6:10-6:50. Gut wrenching lyrics about the Charge. Always makes me tear up but thinking about it. The emotional feeling is well-done here, artistically. “For many they know it is their last” & “Glory their only gain”.😢

  5. F.... 2....

The courage of the blue, the valor of the grey...

Damn those are some fine lyrics

  6. C.... ....

Gloriously epic. It truly makes me feel as if I were watching the events of the battle unfold before me.

  7. J.... A....

Seriously one of the most amazing masterpieces of an album I've ever heard, and it never stops being amazing - I've had this album since day 1. And this is just the bonus CD for the American release.

8:51-9:21 if that part doesn't get you chills then you're not human

  11. F.... ....

Not te real Iced Earth, but I did like Owens his vocals. It kinda helped the Iron Maiden copy style the band was after at that given time.

  12. B.... M....

Brother vs. Brother. This was so sad, and many of the soldiers were still young kids.

  13. D.... M....

This band has so much talent...

  18. R.... B....

I love the Gettysburg score in the middle with the hint of cannon and rifle in the background. Reminds me of the many times I've seen the movie and visited the field.

  19. E.... A....

The regret from Lee at the end... has chilled my blood everytime I listen to this since the first I heard it in history class in High School in 2005.

  20. R.... ....

    ICED EARTH TO LIVE FOREVER!

  21. A.... F....

God bless Dixie! and God bless America! May our brave ancestors in blue or gray rest in peace

  35. t.... ....

Even though as a whole this album is far from my favourite IE album. 9:35 - 11:10 is imo still the most emotional and heartfelt moment out of all the IE albums.

  36. T.... D....

first heard this song while skitching for the first time years ago. The adrenaline from doing that and the epicness of this song make me miss those days

  37. r.... j....

Robert Johnson I wonder how many people actually picked up all those name drops.

  38. J.... H....

The beginning drums remind me of the beginning drums from Trust by Megadeth.

  39. T.... ....

This trilogy is great and all and I listen to "Devil to Pay" and "Hold at All Costs" pretty frequently. But the one thing that lessens the other two and absolutely ruins this one is the dripping pro-Confederate bias. I mean, here the Confederate loss at Gettysburg is portrayed as some great tragedy. There's definitely some respect for the Union (courage of the blue) but they're still portrayed antagonistically for the most part.

    T.... ....

@MrWatchyourtoes Alright, let me ask you this: are you actually saying that being drafted into the army for a temporary period is no different than being born into lifelong, inescapable servitude? Nonetheless that the South had a draft too, so it's a redundant point.

And I also have to ask you: are you telling me that the Nazis were the victims in WW2 because they got invaded towards the end? I am arguing that being invaded is irrelevant if you were the one who provoked the conflict in the first place.

    T.... ....

@Thomas You conveniently ignored the point regarding the American revolution, were the colonists wrong to take arms against the British who were an invading force at the time and used taxation as exploitation? I will go one better were the Native Americans not slaughtered by a foreign invader and have their lands stolen with use of force by the U.S army? The victors really do write history.

    T.... ....

@MrWatchyourtoes You could argue either way. However, I am more sympathetic to the colonists because Great Britain was giving them any say in goverment. To say the South had no say in the Federal Goverment is ludicrous. A disproportionate amount of Presidents and Supreme Court justices were Southerners. So let me ask you: do you think that a colony rebelling from the control of a mother country thousands of miles away who gives them no say in their goverment is equivalent to the lower half of a country splitting off after the North made numerous attempts at compromise because they didn't like the results of a free and fair election - one that they tried to rig?

    T.... ....

@Thomas Look at the size of the U.S it's too big and too multicultural even today which is why it's still one of the most violent first world countries in the world. The majority of peoples first and foremost loyalty is to their state before their country which makes complete sense and is the way it should be, now put yourself in the early 1860s.

    T.... ....

@MrWatchyourtoes That doesn't mean that the South was a colony of the North, because it wasn't. Or that the Confederacy cared about State's Rights, because it didn't. The Confederacy was about protecting slavery, full stop. Also, Canada is bigger than us and has a fair bit of diversity as well, yet there's not nearly as much violence.

  40. T.... D....

I love this song. I might love it more since the first time I heard it I was skitching for the first time and it made me feel amazing but to this day I love the story and epic sound

  41. O.... M....

I'm a Missourian. A proud LCMS Missourian. We may have been a slave state, and we not have had a lot of involvement in big battles, but we fought like hell to keep Missouri in Union hands. We abolished slavery within our owns state towards the end of the war. They burned down our capitol, but not our love for liberty!

    O.... M....

Good on ya. Always do people forget that there was a great deal of resistance to the Confederacy in their own lands.

    O.... M....

Texan here. Not entirely sure who I would have fought for. I think I would have ultimately sided with the majority of Texas in fighting with the confederacy because I am a Texan first and could never bring myself to take up arms against her. However we certainly should have listened to Sam Houston. Siding with the confederacy lead us to defeat however not nearly as bad as he thought it would. And Texans fought well. That’s something to be proud of. Texans kept the enemy out of our lands, they fought well. They died well.

    O.... M....

@FrontLineTexan 21 certainly Texas had its share of memorable battles, such as the one at Sabine Pass. Those poor, foolish Union sailors...

    O.... M....

    CometTamer
The Texan gunners were accurate. I like to think there’s some connection between that and the crew of the U.S.S. Texas winning so many awards for accuracy and gunnery.

    O.... M....

@FrontLineTexan 21 It did help that they had what amounted to stationary targets to simply pick off at leisure. The mud flats of the river meant Union troops were moving through it at a veritable crawl, some not at all because of how far into the mud they sank.

  42. S.... G....

    awesomeness

  43. G.... ....

Definitely going down as one of the best Iced Earth songs ever made. The melancholy in Ripper's voice at the end hits hard, and the orchestras add just as intense of an atmosphere.

  44. T.... ....

Some songs simply portray the tragedy, this song makes you FEEL the tragedy...

    T.... ....

    Tyrant does well with impressions

    T.... ....

It makes you feel like you're watching the moments of the battle unfold in front of you.

  45. c.... ....

"we're almost there my boys, i've never served with finer. we must push forward boys, and bayonet the yankee tyrants!" That line gives me chills every time!

    c.... ....

Same here... and I'm not even American ;).
Makes me think of the tragedy of late 19th century warfare with firepower eclipsing manoeuvre - there's a through-line running from the "Charge of the Light Brigade" through "Pickett's Charge" via "von Bredow's Death Ride" and the "Defense of Plevna" right up to "the First Day on the Somme".

    Best regards

I love this song more than all Iced Earth songs

    .... ....

    Couldn't agree more.

    .... ....

While I agree that this is my favorite, I love the whole trilogy. I remember buying this album when it first came out and I never looked back. The Glorious Burden is one of the best. Thirty one minutes, fifty three seconds well spent :)

  52. S.... Q....

one of my favorite songs not just one of my favorite iced earth songs jon scaffher is an amazing writter

  53. W.... K....

I have no problem with the removal of the confederate flag in 2016, considering it should have been permanently removed nearly 150 years earlier when the war ended. Citizens can and should be able to display whatever flags they want, but flags representing treason have no place on government property. I can't for the life of me understand why this is controversial.

    W.... K....

You should learn more history. For the record, the Revolutionary war was treasonous. So, by your logic, nobody should fly "Don't Tread On Me." Will I be flying the flag? Hell no, but removing statues of brave men who fought and died is a knee-jerk reaction, subjugating respect that was earned with blood all to placate Social Justice Warrior assholes.

    W.... K....

Adolph: Well of course they were treasonous, but they were treasonous towards England, not the United States. The confederacy was treasonous to The United States of America.

    W.... K....

Adolph Oliver Bush but don't tread on me flags are american we aren't part of the UK the CSA was birthed of treason the CSA lost so they aren't their own country therefore it's a sign of treason while given I don't think monuments of men like Robert E. Lee should not be taken down because that's disrespectful but the Confederate flag should not be flown in government areas because it represents treason. I don't agree with the SJWs wanting to outlaw it because of slavery and shit because that's a foolish reason.

    W.... K....

fabricio Alves it represents treason and unneeded american bloodshed

Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3 1863

    J.... G....

Cole Parker thousands of people died in that battle show some respect.

  58. T.... M....

Brave men on both sides who should be honored...BOTH sides. I'm not even from the south but this removal of confederate flags and renaming of shit named after Confederate soldiers and politicians is positively bullshit.

    T.... M....

Tin Man true warriors with honor respect those on either side. it's never black and white. most rebs just fought for their land and their own personal beliefs. whether a lot were racist dicks doesn't mean shit, the union had a lot of jackasses, stonewall was a solid dude by all accounts, grant was a drunken corrupt ass hole haha, Robert e Lee was a good dude.

the Vietcong just wanted to not be occupied by us or the french, and fought back. they asked us for help against the French and we said no, so did the rest of the allies, Russia said sure and suddenly they're 'commies'. they were ballsy fucks to take on us and win, we both used horrific tactics. we honored and respected the Afghan people when they held off the soviets, trained them and gave them Stingers to take down the HIND-D gunships and said they fought for liberty and now they're evil terrorists now that it's us instead of the soviets

there's no such thing as a timeless enemy, it's only about the Era we live in and where the profit is, just like in 1984, pumping out propaganda about their big enemy then suddenly switching enemies midway without missing a beat..it's all meaningless.
Hannibal of Carthage was a fucking boss crossing the alps to fight the Roman incursion heroically winning a fuck ton of battles until Scipio Africanus used his own tactics and shady shit and won, to the Roman's he was an evil barbarian scum and they salt and burned Carthage..

fucking Nazi Germany, a lot of the old guard from ww1, Prussian and Austrian dudes had honor and were disgusted by the SS and the policies, there were 5th columns and assassination attempts against hitler..every sucking side in every war has chill people, bad people, good people..the victor writes history. the union was mainly economically motivated not heroic slave liberators. they were on the whole more morally upstanding but regardless..

    T.... M....

Tin Man couldn't have said it better myself.

    T.... M....

Considering only 3% of Southern families owned slaves, it is positively absurd to think the average Confederate fought to preserve slavery. Thank you Tin Man for your fantastic post.

    T.... M....

    you're right. it sucks.

    T.... M....

Yeah, you're right. Let's honor people who fought to destroy the country out of fear of losing their right to own other human beings. Great idea.

  59. g.... ....

If this song doesn't stir up emotion inside you, check your pulse. You might be dead.

    g.... ....

...I hear the despair in rippers singing, intense!!...emotional indeed!!....

    g.... ....

No matter how many times I listen to the song, "The rebel cannon break the silence" always gives me goosebumps

    g.... ....

You can feel the emotion when he starts the were almost there my boys

    g.... ....

This song makes me happy at the end. I have a bias that I believe the Confederates were evil though.

    g.... ....

Well then i might be dead

  60. M.... M....

  61. S.... C....

This is the song that turned me on to Iced Earth....as much as I hate to admit that......
I loved Ripper replacing Halford and saw them and him twice day to day back to back twice....
It was such a small venue I was 10 feet if that from K.K.
Tim was so awesome that when I heard he went to Iced Earth. I never heard of them, checked this out and was like...WOW...

Of course I went back to Something Wicked and Barlow.....
I will not get involved in any argument of either vocalist.
    They are both great....
But fuck Barlow....in A Question of Heaven.......and so many more...
But every song in this album is epic....including this one....

  62. T.... D....

My first time hearing this was skateboard skitching with a friend like an idiot but goddamn it was fun and this song is still one of my favorites. both for how epic it is and the reminiscent factor it has on me

  63. J.... O....

This is the very definition of epic.

  64. P.... C....

    At the double-quick they march

+IF YOU DON'T BUY TORGUE GUNS YOU ARE RETARDED
    This whole album is epic..

    I.... Y....

don't know if u know at 2:37 that's Matt barlow. Tim and Matt together on a track is beyond words!

    I.... Y....

I'm pretty sure it is. Barlow did help create this album before he quit Iced Earth. I even heard a speculation that there was a whole albums of demos with Barlow as vocals for The Glorious Burden

    I.... Y....

michael carra that’s not Matt Barlow. It is Jon Schaffer doing lead vocals in this line

  71. T.... M....

Going to Gettysburg at the end of the month for my Birthday. Suffice it to say, this, "Hold at all Costs" and "The Devil to Pay" has helped get me pumped.

    b.... s....

    S.... C....

    +Shawn Chamberlain
    Found them....hahahaha!!!

  77. S.... L....

Unfortunately this album was Schaffer's last masterpiece, in my opinion!

    S.... L....

Steve L his last masterpiece was incorruptible

    S.... L....

Nope. He has many more years in the business and a lot to say.

  78. T.... W....

    Great tune!

    That Epic Intro \m/

  81. W.... P....

Is it gay if I want to have sex with this song?

    W.... P....

@Wopa Pavo This song is very masculine, so your inklings towards homosexuality may be well founded. Of course, it is just a song so technically no.

    W.... P....

    For you Tin Man:
First of all, he was kidding.....and the fact that you couldn't see that and how your tone against gay people is angry goes to show you don't like them. I have gay cousins and I love them. I, myself am not gay, cept when I go to prison and find supposed tough guys like you, whom I put a shank to their throat, take them into my cell, order them to bend over, use some state issued toothpaste to glue a Playboy centerfold over their back as I fuck their ever so tender ass.....
Love hearing tough guys like you scream.....

    W.... P....

@Shawn Chamberlain I don't give two shits about the faggots in your family although it doesn't surprise me you proudly mention them every chance you get like a fucking beta male hipster barista you are.  Jesus, get a life.

    W.... P....

    @Tin Man
Do I look like a Beta Male Hipster Barista...
That chick in the photo next to me was a chick I dated (Ashley). She was my submissive....best 6 months of my life right there......
Funny how you just have a picture of a big gun as your profile pic....
Says a few things.....you're either ugly, a pimply faced troll.....ugly.....and/or you have a small dick.....

    W.... P....

Wopa Pavo Only if you are gay.

  82. E.... N....

    epic!!!!!!!

  83. R.... V....

    Cara,
    Essa música é linda demais
Toda vez que a escuto, vem um pequeno filme na minha cabeça
Eu gosto muito do Barlow no IE, mas o Tim nesse álbum PQP, melhor vocal dele de todos os tempos sem dúvida

  84. J.... D....

Such an amazing song, such an amazing album.  Too bad more people didn't go out and buy this one.  Concept albums seem to be on the way out.

    J.... D....

    I bought it.

    J.... D....

@John Doe The dvd is awesome too...I found it, quite by accident, at a local music store, used. Interview with Jon, Tour of the battlefield with Jon and a licensed battlefield guide....I lucked out that day. Went in looking for this cd and found the dvd too

    J.... D....

+John Doe True story: This is Iced Earth's best selling album.

    J.... D....

    hhhhhhhh

    hhhhh

  85. L.... M....

    Saudades ouvia demais esse som**

    L.... M....

Quando lançou, eu ouvi tanto esse álbum e até me arrepiava com essa musica.

  86. C.... ....

I cannot possibly imagine charging over open ground while getting shot at.... The confederates had a fucking set that's for damn sure AND the Union held them at all costs.... absolutely insane!

  87. M.... ....

Ripper with Iced Earth is proof that you could have 360 degree perfection but sometimes things were not meant to be.

    M.... ....

Glorious Burden was definitely meant to be. Framing armageddon was fine as well.

  88. G.... H....

Longstreet in this song is actually John Schaffer, if I remember correctly it was general Armistead that broke the lines

    G.... H....

That's right, but he was killed and his men were forced back. He broke the line's where his best friend's men held. The Civil War sucked for everyone.

  89. K.... ....

Im gonna drive around downtown with the windows down jammin this piece

  90. H.... ....

    3:50 <3

  91. S.... Z....

The best part of the three. And Ripper Owen's best vocal performance in his life.

    S.... Z....

Not his best, its just THE BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE IN THE HISTORY, FUCK YEAH!

    S.... Z....

    Ripper Rulz!

  92. F.... ....

The best vocal performance of Tim "Ripper" Owens' career.

    F.... ....

he sounds terrible when he sings normal, it´s just the high notes he brings good. I wish Barlow comes back and they play their old style again, i hate this shitty chorus

    F.... ....

Batlow is awesomebutyou're so wrong about Ripper.

    F.... ....

Barlow....fucking I hate using my phone to text

  93. r.... ....

Not if the retreating Union soldiers had panicked the reinforcements as well. A single unit routing can catch up an entire army and set the whole thing to flight. At the Battle of Franklin the Confederates attacked over double the distance and still managed to seize the Federal position. Both sides made assaults similar in scale and objective to Pickett's Charge. Some were successful, some were not.

  94. A.... ....

    Awesome!

  95. r.... ....

Yes, if you ignore the Union troops fleeing the Confederates, the panic caused by seeing the center of your line shattered, the confusion in command that results from enemy soldiers behind your lines... War isn't units moving neatly on a map, it is pure chaos. The attack was a huge risk and was not supported as well as it should have been, but similar attacks were made successfully at other battles during the war by both sides.

  96. M.... ....

Gah! These lyrics are so sad. Heartbreaking.

  97. r.... ....

It was very risky, but it wasn't doomed to fail. It was a much more concentrated attack than Burnside's at Fredericksburg, and had the artillery been on target, it would have shattered the Yankee defenders. The CS artillery ammo was coming from a different arsenal, though, and the fuses were longer, so most of the shells went over the Yankees' heads.

    r.... ....

The mistake was letting the union troops dig in on the ridges. If not for Lee not pushing them off the high ground before they set up the battle would have happened somewhere else and who knows what would have happened. Ultimately the North had more supplies and was the favorite to win from the start.
