You may like William Michael Moore’s version but Sam hunt is unique and if he were to try and sound more country that would be being fake so I enjoy both versions because it can kind of tell a different story from different people singing it. Agreed.  Its stripped down and raw, yet convincing.  The "talking" choruses are even better when he comes back in and sings,  Then he sings the 3rd "chorus", and it makes the song more poignant.

So this is the first time I'm hearing Sam Hunt's version of this song. I don't consider myself a country fan so I don't really know a lot of the artists or anything, but I'd have to give this song to William Michael Morgan.

Sam Hunt goes from singing (and even that I didn't really like) to just straight up talking. The whole song just feels really lazy. And I've heard two other songs by Hunt on the radio and I'm pretty sure he does the same thing in those songs (though I admit I do enjoy Breakup In A Small Town). I can't recall the other song or even if I liked it.

Johnny cash used to talk in his songs all the time and no one gives him crap for it. And thats the king of country
