Human League, The - The Black Hit Of Space Lyrics

Been out all night, I needed a bite, I thought I'd put a record on
I reached for the one with the ultra-modern label, and wondered where the light had gone
It had a futuristic cover, lifted straight from Buck Rogers
The record was so black it had to be a con
The autochanger switched as I filled my sandwich
And futuristic sounds warbled off and on

The black hit of space
It's the one without a face
It's the one that doesn't fit
You can only see the flip
The black hit of space
Sucking in the human race
How can it stay at the top
When it's swallowed all the shops

As the song climbed the charts, the others disappeared
Til there was nothing but it left to buy
It got to number one, then into minus figures
Though nobody could understand why

The black hit of space
It's the one without a face
It's the one that doesn't fit
You can only see the flip
The black hit of space
Sucking in the human race
How can it stay at the top
When it's swallowed all the shops

I couldn't stand this bland sound any more so I walked towards my deck to turn it off
All I could see was the B-side of the disc which had assumed a doughnut shape with the label on the outside rim
I reached for the arm which was less than one micron long but weighed more than Saturn and time stood still
I knew I had to escape but every time I tried to flee, the record was in front of me

The black hit of space
Get James Burke on the case
It's the hit that's never gone
Time stops when you put it...(on)

Human League, The The Black Hit Of Space Comments
  1. c.... ....

    Even today it sounds futuristic

  2. M.... W....

Along with Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode the best band ever to use synths

  3. H.... S....

Back in the day Travelogue and Simple Mind's Empires And Dance were the albums which encouraged me to make my own music. So grateful.

  4. V.... F....

So German but at the same time so Sheffield

  5. J.... S....

Used to go to sleep listening to this on headphones. Odd dreams followed.

  6. R.... A....

Ovo je za mene jedna od najboljih pjesama ikada sastavljena. Humane league je sigurno jedan od najvećih

  7. u.... ....

the period of 1976-1986 was the most progressive and interesting in the period of modern music, I think!!! SO many musical currents, so many experiments, so many nice bands, so much very good music!!

  8. M.... T....

This could easily have been the plotline to an entire episode of Dr Who or even Red Dwarf. Would be a lot better than the tripe they're passing off these days as Season 11.

  9. C.... ....

I'm 53 now, and this is the song that changed everything for me as an early teenager. I first heard it played by the late great John Peel on his late night show on Radio One when I was out camping in a tent in Wales, and immediately recorded it on my radio/cassette player after hearing the first few seconds. I must have played it 50 times in succession afterwards. This song shook my entire world as an early teenager. It was nothing like anything I ever heard in my entire life ..... almost alien for a small kid in 1980. Wow.

  10. m.... b....

great album , take me back please

  11. m.... ....

Sweet memories singing this in my bedroom, good ole memories

  12. B.... C....

incredible sound...bought this in the early 80's...blew me the fuck away...i was always trying to find a drum machine that sounded like the synth percussion...that they got at the time...i believe i read it was a Roland System 100? dunno Roland all that well..Phil said they used it for percussion...

  13. D.... F....

It's so Dr Who-like taking a TARDIS trip into a strange place/time between 1979 and 1980 and another dimension.(??)

  14. s.... d....

The autochanger switched as i filled my sandwich

  15. M.... F....

this track is so ahead of it's time i can't manage.

  16. R.... A....

Human league je jedan od najboljih bezvremenskih bendova koji postoje, ova pjesma dokazuje to. Njihov izražaj pomjera granice, ne samo da je futuristicki nego je i univerzalni i nenadmasiv. Human league band za sva vremena

  17. W.... S....

    less than 1 micron long

    W.... S....

    but weighed more than saturn!

  18. O.... e....

le rock est mort le jour où human league a commencé à faire de la merde.

  19. e.... k....

So ahead of its time…Just amazing, maybe the best new wave song ever produced.

  20. W.... ....

the brain of german electro and the heart of british punk

    W.... ....

Kraftwerk from the waist up and The Sex Pistols from the waist down.

    W.... ....

    Early league are great

    W.... ....

    They were pretty anti-punk

  21. D.... D....

Excellent, how music pushed the boundaries back then, the new sounds that came through and music revolutions that went on. Not like the safe middle of the road crap of now.  Everyone should buy this record when they go to release that next "bland sound" ex factor release later in the year, really stick it to those controlling sods in the mainstream music industry who stifle all that you hear every day on the radio LOL.

    D.... D....

Rose-tinted glasses? Lots of bland crap in the 80s too BUT I also remember more challenging and diverse lyrics and sounds, stronger female performers, openly gay performers (when it was illegal for under 21s!) so definitely better than today's musical diarrhoea! tgfyoutube!

    D.... D....

@PenisMcWhirtar lol both of you with the rose tinted glasses. How can you say today's music is bad when you don't even look for the good stuff besides what you presented to you? With SoundCloud and the internet now anyone can release their own music worldwide. So much better music today than ever before.

    D.... D....

My point is that the mainstream (e.g. Human League) was less mainstream in the 80s - some pretty radical sounds and acts found their way in. There are great artists today (but a lot of crap to sift through) but the mainstream sounds and acts are pretty conservative, judging from what teens listen to.

    D.... D....

human league at let's rock 80s Festival Liverpool the best

  22. t.... ....

This was the soundtrack to many an acid trip back in the early 80's! Aye, those were the days!

Travelogue  not "travelougue". Very interesting progressive experimental album to me.

    A.... ....

    Better than Depeche Mode ever.

    A.... ....

  48. D.... B....

Awesome early League. Another Sheffield band to be proud of.

  49. c.... ....

Saturn would actually float in water !

  50. a.... ....

This album after darkness marks the debut of synthrock... David Bowie said after seing their show that year ' I've just witnessed the future of rock'...

  51. t.... ....

the record was so black it had to be a con...

  52. m.... ....

A lot of Human League lyrics make me chuckle. I liked that Phill watched Hawaii 50, but seeing as we only had a couple of TV channels back in the day then, not really suprising.

  53. p.... ....

I've played this at drug-filled house parties and seen stoners stop, stand aghast and gawp like guppies to this...

  54. f.... ....

@TheRealTwigman i thought you were telling a true story, then realized it was the lyrics

  55. P.... J....

Thanks Human League - thanks Puppetmaster.

  56. T.... ....

couldn't stand this bland sound any more so I walked towards my deck to

turn it off. All I could see was the B-side of the disc which had assumed a

doughnut shape with the label on the outside rim. I reached for the arm

which was less than one micron long but weighed more than Saturn and time

stood still. I knew I had to escape but every time I tried to flee, the

record was in front of me.

  57. J.... C....

Did I really just hear him sing 'the autochanger switched as I filled my sandwich'?

  58. F.... a....

    Brilliant!!! :D

  59. s.... ....

Sounds so fresh and new! Swear you can use this in a modern day film score and kids wouldn't know the difference!!

  60. M.... A....

all bands cash in and for most their early stuff is the best
