Hotelier, The - Soft Animal Lyrics

We were cloaked in the awning of night or early morning.
Through the headboard there's a flicker of light and light warning.
Sophie's on the bunk overhead reading Mary Oliver
While I lay still in my bed.

That's when I see you there.
Fawn doe, light snow.
Make me feel alive,
Make me believe that all my selves align.
Fawn, doe, light snow.
Spots on brown of white
Make me believe that it is all alright.

Your soft face pressed to the wilt,
First spring sunrise
Standing low on quivering stilts.
In attempting to keep you to stay
I am raising no alarm.
It is just us two alone.

Then I feel a sigh of wind, your raising eyes
The rolling fog that lets you hide
And I can hear the rustling as you go.
Oh, go slow.

Fawn, doe, light snow.
Make me feel alive.
Make me believe that I don't have to die.
Fawn, doe, light snow.
Spots on brown of white
Make me believe that there's a God sometimes.

The ring around your mother's heart
Grows saccharine then falls apart
And I can hear the rustling as you go.
You camouflaged or clearly seen
And nameless in the in-between
And I can hear the rustling as you go.

The firing of rifles off
The echo hits you hard enough
And I can hear the rustling as you go.
A soft and skittish self inside
Shines golden, opal, chrysolite
And I can feel the rustling as you go.
Oh, go slow.

A mob of voices harmonize
And tell me that you're not alive
But I can feel the rustling as you go.

    So good.

Could someone explain me the verses "The ring around your mothers heart grows saccharine then falls apart"?

    h.... ....

hi! great time there! well...l thought : perhaps the first signs of spring come in dew drops and brings the sweetness that all seek ... alo the earth, or the sun, or the moon...maybe! hugs! \O

  5. S.... ....

This ground has already been covered 1000x times before and way better back in the nineties when Counting Crows were parlaying this emo rock to far greater effect. Listened to the album on iTunes. Not a fan of it sorry!

  6. V.... M....

first time hearing this band, but I literally teared up at the chorus

  7. c.... ....

Pretty sure I can still see a penis in there somewhere

yo just realized this album pic is a real nudist photo...epic!

"You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
    love what it loves."

the note at 2:30 my god...

  10. R.... J....

I've been sitting on this band for far too long apparently, that is if their other songs are even remotely as rad as this turned out to be. This song is ridiculous

    R.... J....

curious of what you think of the rest of the band as i assume youve checked them out in the past 8 months. Personally i find songs like piano player and among the wildflowers to be much better than this song.

  11. A.... A....

Best band. You can keep pop punk. Give me this all day all week all year.

  12. W.... H....

    this is perfect

This album. My word this album is gonna be great. And those who have worked on it/heard it insist this is not even close to the best song on it. So hyped for Sun with how highly people have been regarding it.

+ReturnDivided I saw them play Sun 3 times during their Australian tour and yeah its mental

    Who hurt you Christian, who....

    e.... a....

To live, you don't understand why, it makes no sense to you, this need to get out of bed. It hurts, a lot. But you get up anyway.
I think it is the process of understanding what it means to live, a plea for understanding, that this song invokes. A continuation of a person struggling to cope with loss. The mood of the music reminds me of a more impassioned early TWIABP

    e.... a....

+ReturnDivided Makes sense, in an interview Christian said that the experience of this album would be very "constant", that is compared to the rollercoaster of Home this album would be trying to evoke a sense of tranquility and peace. I think they've done an excellent job thus far

    e.... a....

+ethan avrigean Agree to disagree I suppose. He sounds pleading at parts like the chorus undoubtedly, but when he says "makes me believe that theres a god sometimes" I don't know how thats anything but positive, hopeful. It conveys that something has happened so wonderful or amazing that its sparked a belief in a higher power to someone who didn't believe. And just his tone in the verses is very....content, it's got a sort of longing but also a sense of satisfaction, especially when he says "I am raising no alarm, it is just us two alone" and of course in those words he's describing how he can feel the presence of his deceased friend. All in all I find this song very peaceful at the least, and something of a bookend to Home. In Home he was agonizing over loss and struggling to deal with the grief. Here, it seems like he's finally found peace. Your post was very articulate and thoughtful though and these things are always open to interpretation, thank you for sharing a different viewpoint, I found your words quite beautiful all the same.
