Holly, Buddy - Bo Diddley Lyrics

Bo Diddley'll buy baby a diamond ring
If that diamond ring don't shine
He's gonna take it to a private eye
If that private eye can't see
He better not take-a ring-a from me

Won't you come to my house a-back at home
Take-a my baby on the way from home
Love-a that boo-doo, oh where've you been
Up to your house and gone again

Bo Diddley caught a bearcat
To make a pretty baby a Sunday hat
Bo Diddley caught a nanny-goat
To make a pretty baby a Sunday coat

Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley have you heard
My pretty baby said she was a bird

Holly, Buddy Bo Diddley Comments
  1. I.... T....

    "I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
    The day the music died."
Those lyrics perfectly sum up the influence Buddy had over the music scene in the late 50's and emphasise how impossible it has been to replace him. His songs are as fresh and relevant today as they were over 60 years ago. A musical giant and an innovative genius.

  2. M.... H....

He was the best - brilliant !!

  3. O.... H....

The buddy holly sound was bad ass..

  4. p.... r....

    love this superb

  5. a.... .....

    thanks!

  6. A.... S....

    Cool video
    Good tribute well done
    and great audio

  7. s.... r....

    That guitar sounds lush!

  8. j.... c....

I have never listened to a bad buddy holly song ever and I have every song he put on tape even just talking then you think some of these were B sides yet there to me/to us / all number one songs, am old now 58 but I still go to Lubbock every year in FEB and SEP, the statue is still hard to walk passed,
    KEEP RAVING ON,

  9. m.... c....

Legends like buddy elvis and Freddie are dead and now we have Justin Bieber.... Ugh

  10. J.... D....

Bo Diddley may have written and recorded the song, but Buddy Holly’s version is fuelled with more fire and power!

  11. E.... C....

I like how Buddy keeps multiplying! My favorite part is when there are thousands of Buddys!😂😂😂

  12. H.... L....

    Fantastic video!

  13. Z.... ....

Great editing of the oh boy live video

  14. j.... ....

Excellent video to go with this song, but wonder what some color would do added to it.

  15. H.... G....

Too bad about his passing. These would have made good side songs from him. I did not like how Norman Petty recorded with his old tapes to make them sound better. Not good at all.

  16. H.... G....

Norman Petty should not have overdubbed all of Buddy Hollys newest songs. Most sounded good without the Fireballs added instruments.

  17. B.... B....

    Perfect vid
    Next trip I'll use it

  18. s.... s....

No sorry by Bo Diddley, ding dong........

  19. s.... s....

Bo Didlley was written by Bo Didlley, right?

  20. j.... s....

    Love it!

  21. J.... W....

I saw Bo live and he was incredible. I kept asking myself the question when Buddy was recording, "Is this really as good as I think it is?". He was a shooting star.

  22. r.... ....

This is a great pop-art music video

  23. B.... H....

You know you a bad mofo when you cover another legends song and do it better than they did. Buddy was just that damn good

    B.... H....

no one could ever out diddle Bo, but im with you on the greats giving their interpretations of other greats.

    B.... H....

    I think Buddy just did

  24. J.... B....

Iike. How. This. Is. Done. The. Great. Buddy holly. Well. Done. Great. Song

  25. B.... H....

I often wonder what Buddy would think about how rock ended up and all the changes it went through from the moment he died until now. I think he’d shit his pants about how it declined.

    B.... H....

The rise and decline of Buddy's invention.

  26. C.... S....

    Buddy FOREVER 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶🎼

  27. s.... f....

Now every one this is such a class song.Buddy Holly left us at such a young age but hes music has lasted decades.

  28. J.... R....

Rock'n'Roll allways come back, because it never dies.

  29. M.... J....

This is a posthumous release FYI

  30. B.... H....

I love this song... It's a great song to listen to or play... But then again there weren't many Buddy Holly songs that weren't great to listen to or play...

  31. D.... w....

Hi I'm Buddy holly hi I'm Buddy holly that what the video says

  32. s.... ....

Wow, this is so cool! Great video.

  33. C.... B....

Bizarre and a bit spooky...The song was actually recorded 4 years after Buddy's death and this video brings Holly back to life the same way the song did 54 years ago...Priceless!

  34. K.... B....

    Clever.

  35. M.... &....

How he could sing Bo Diddley in 1963? -He died in plane crash 1959!

    M.... &....

This video was obviously made retrospectively - as you say, Buddy died in 1959.

    M.... &....

MF88 DMC: The answers to your questions are but a mere few keystrokes away from your answers. Buddy's life, his music, and the commercial presentations of what you hear are far more interesting than fiction. Dive in, do some research, and bask in the glory of what and whom Buddy Holly was and yet is to become. Regards.

  36. M.... M....

Hey, great vids! I'm pretty sure you gonna enjoy my channel, so check it out and leave a comment! Wish you a great day! Best, Marc

  37. E.... S....

I agree that when you say "50s music", you mean music between 1955 and 1963.  And more important, SiriusXM feels the same way. Their '50s station includes music up through '63.  Their '60s station is really a '64-'72 station.

  38. I.... T....

This video is actually quite arty for 1963! Buddy's voice was so unique - that elusive quality that defies definition. For me, he was the best ever, a true genius.

    I.... T....

    He died in 1959

    I.... T....

This video was not made in 1963, the uploader made the video.

  39. T.... R....

He's singing the lyrics pretty clearly, except for "mojo." Wonder if that was intentional, to avoid some kind of controversy over the word back then (like maybe it was too "satanic" or something). Great cover in any event.

  40. A.... W....

Great version of Bo Diddley and a great vid - thanks for uploading.

  41. D.... M....

    Excellent home-brewed video!

  42. t.... ....

In my Holly playlist with the great original. Buddy's version would inevitably turn out more tame, but it is fun. Thanks for the upload!

  43. B.... H....

    Funky fresh!

  44. J.... E....

    uck ING great song

  45. s.... ....

On this day in 1963 {September 29th} a package tour with headliners the Everly Brothers, Little Richard, and Bo Diddley began a 36 day U.K. tour at the Victoria Theater in London, England...
The tour's opening act was five lads going by the name, The Rolling Stones, and this was their debut nationwide tour...
At the time Bo Diddley's self-titled album was at #17 on the U.K. Top Albums chart; and fifteen days later on October 13th his single "Pretty Thing" would peak at #34 on the U.K. Singles chart...
Earlier on 1963 on July 7th the late Buddy Holly's covered version of "Bo Diddley" would reach #4 {for 1 week} on the U.K. Singles chart...

  46. D.... P....

    Good job on the video

  47. B.... H....

Not that I dont LOVE this song and Buddy Holly, but I swear I have heard a newer version of this.. anyone know who that would be by?

  48. J.... B....

    this is fucked

  49. b.... ....

1963?, but Buddy passed away in 1959!!

    b.... ....

His record label Coral had in fact brought out a batch of unreleased master recordings that were made between 1956 & 1958, thus resulting in albeit posthumous chart entries from 1959 through 1963. This included up to 3 albums, one of which, "Reminiscing" (LVA 9212) included that particular track.

    b.... ....

Maybe, just maybe, he recorded it while still alive.

    b.... ....

Top 10 hit in the UK 1963, he had 3 UK top 10 hits in 1963, thanks in part to the Beatles mentioning him and covering many of his songs, this generated new interest in him

    b.... ....

Buddy is so badass he didn’t let death stop him from making music.

    b.... ....

shhhh... we do not speak of this...

  50. t.... ....

When I was 15 I first saw Buddy in concert, the most amazing feeling

    t.... ....

+thetruth  You were privileged.  It was not given to all that many to see him perform :  a shooting star that crossed our heavens and then was gone far too soon.

    t.... ....

    Lucky lucky you

  51. R.... B....

Of course this is highly overdubbed.  I believe the original was just BH on acoustic guitar.  But, curiously, I like the overdubs.

    R.... B....

+Ron B  Yep., I think a great deal of trouble and care went into the dubbing of the basic recordings that Buddy left behind unreleased. In many cases, such as here, they made them into highly marketable commercially successful records, and let us hear them as Buddy Holly hits, in the charts and letting us know recordings of his we might never have got to know otherwise.

  52. T.... V....

I saw Buddy perform this song live on a Lubbock Television station in 1956. It is still the greatest concert I ever saw.

    T.... V....

+Tom Vaughn You lucky man !

    T.... V....

    Very lucky man !!

    T.... V....

    You lucky dog

    T.... V....

I bought this when it was released as a single in the UK back in 1963, it got to No.3 on the charts at the Time, he had 2 further top 10 hits in the UK charts in 1963, this was in part due to the Mersey beat explosion including the Beatles who copied many of buddy Holly's song's, this created a renewed interest in him

    T.... V....

How amazing that must have been!!

  53. A.... S....

why does the title say 1963?

    A.... S....

Because Buddy Holly recorded it in 1956, but it wasn't released until four years after his death in 1963.

    A.... S....

+Alyne Sage Because it was first released as a single in that year, in the UK, that is, where it reached No 7 in the British charts that summer.  What a great year that was for  Buddy in the UK, with three major posthumous hits for him.

    A.... S....

Because Buddy is so badass he didn’t let death stop him from making music.

    A.... S....

Norman Petty overdubbeded a lot of Buddy's songs with the band the Fireballs.

  54. T.... L....

this is a good song but it is hard to tell what parts buddy is playing on guitar because norman petty overdubbed this song and many others that sound like crap compared to the undubbed versions

    T.... L....

I usually prefer the undubbed versions too... they really over did it with some of the songs. In the apartment tape overdubbed songs he ends up sounding a mile away from everything else. It's really annoying when the backup vocals are louder than the lead singer. :/

    T.... L....

I think they did ok on this one

  55. t.... ....

    miss you buddy

  56. f.... ....

Buddy Holly rose from the dead and sang this song in 1963.

    f.... ....

ffdztdr Buddy is so badass he didn’t let death stop him from making music.

  57. f.... ....

There's tons of songs from the early 60's that were recorded in the late 50's and weren't released until the early 60's. But to me the early 60's is still the 50's. it really didn't change until 1965, with hippies and British Invasion, and psychedellic rock. of course Beatles were '64 and up. Even songs recorded in the early 60's still sound 50's, like You're 16 you're beautiful and you're mine by Johnny Burnette (1960), and Runaround Sue by Dion and the Belmonts (1961), and the great Imposter (1962) and No particular place to go by Chuck Berry (1964) and lots more! from 1960-1964. or Watch American Graffiti! about the late 1950's early 1960's era.

    f.... ....

+Boom Dos Bob Dylan had the good fortune to see Buddy perform on the Winter Dance Party tour in January 1959, at the Armoury, Duluth. He remembers  it well, as you would expect.

    f.... ....

+Scotseasy Aahhhh it is nice to be around fellow Dylan enthusiasts!

    f.... ....

Teen idols and their music has always been around. They are usually there along with whatever type of music was around at the time. To consider the late '50s and early '60s the 'romantic ballad era' is absurd. Rock music was continuing to evolve.

    f.... ....

@Ed S - I am not claiming the 60's did not evolve from the 50's. I am saying the musical frontier between both decades is pretty clear. Elvis got drafted, Jerry Lee Lewis ruined, Buddy Holly death and out of nowhere "Mack the Knife topped the charts for 9 weeks during 1959.

It is certainly not just my personal opinion either: http://www.history-of-rock.com/death.htm

    f.... ....

I just turned 39 and have liked this man's music since I was 6. 1985 was weird with the hair bands, so my mother said buy this guy. Liked him ever since. I have seen so many of this guys overdubbed songs stripped to what they should have sounded like. It's like "Come on, guys. Let's put this stuff out." But no. We have still got to have the old songs. Too bad.

  58. L.... S....

    Wow! Like I was there.

  59. J.... H....

One of the earliest examples of psychedelic videos - LOVE the song!

    J.... H....

the video isnt from 1963, the youtuber made it.

    J.... H....

this is one of the funniest comments I've ever seen

  60. F.... H....

1959/1963 please, there are professionals out there that can help you. Think about it, there was an invention called a Tape Recorder. That machine could capture you're voice and believe it or not, you could actually play it back at a future date. If you died someone else's could play that same tape back and hear the voice/guitar of the departed. I know to a caveman this sounds like the work of the devil but on the other hand it is not rocket science!

    F.... H....

For me, it all changed late 70's. Then we started to get all this head banging stuff.

    F.... H....

    @Adrian Castellari I wouldn't call it stuff, I would call it S**T

  61. R.... ....

Buddy Holly = The White Bo Diddley

  62. B.... D....

For those of you who want to play this rhythm think 3-2 clave,. That is count 1 2 3, and then pause- 1,2. . It is that simple . It is a common Cuban beat. and also heard in West Africa. 1.2.3. - pause 1,2, Democracy means sharing: Get back to me if this helped you as a guitar or other instrument player.

  63. S.... ....

@BonnieGotClyde36 Yes, Buddy recorded this in 1956, but it wasn't released until 1963. That's "your" history lesson for the day ;-)

    S.... ....

Thanks for the history lesson. Now I don't have to go to school :)

  64. C.... B....

Rock and Roll is not dead. Buddy Holly and Bo Diddley were Great.

  65. T.... ....

    weird video

  66. R.... O....

  67. w.... ....

    REALLY GOOD JOB, thanx...

  68. T.... K....

  75. A.... D....

    puto mato a ritchie

  76. V.... ....

By the way, had he lived longer, I really wonder who'd become the king of rock and roll :)

  77. V.... ....

You are right to the point. You can still make a high quality recording into an MP3. However, it will take a lot of space then hence losing the portability too. Many tones recorded into vinyl are not perceivable by human ear anyway. For a human listener it does not matter therefore, if the sounds is there or not.

  78. y.... ....

    jonas Riis

recorded while he is alive, released after death.

  79. Z.... ....

Buddy holly died in 1959. How can this be from 1963?

  81. P.... W....

The song was released as a single in 1963.

  82. N.... D....

  86. J.... R....

Actually, this is a tribute to Bo Diddley

  87. B.... S....

You are correct, he obviously recorded it before he died, but it was not released until 1963.

That's how you make music... From now on that's how you make music... Legend is to small a word for buddy...

  96. T.... ....

It's because vinyl is still the best way to record music, it just lost popularity because it isn't portable enough. MP3s are a step down from CD, CD is a step down from vinyl, and the tape mediums were just overall shite. lol! It's like movies, ALL the old movies were filmed in HD because of the film medium used, so you can take a movie from 1940 and convert it to blu-ray and watch it in full HD. vinyl is the HD of Music, basically. I would explain more, but I only have so many characters :)

  97. k.... m....

    いい曲だなぁー。

  98. c.... ....

The original basic recording (later overdubbed by the Fireballs) was recorded in 1956 in Clovis. This version, with the Fireballs dubbed on was a top 10 hit in the U;K. in 1963, leaving some to speculate Buddy was still alive but in hiding!
