Holly, Buddy - (You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care Lyrics

You don't like crazy music
You don't like rockin' bands
You just wanna go to a movie show
And sit there holding hands
You're so square
Baby I don't care

I don't why my heart flips
I only know it does
I wonder why I love you baby
I guess it's just because
You're so square
Baby I don't care

You don't know any dance steps that I do
I only know I love you like I do, I do, I do

I don't why my heart flips
I only know it does
I wonder why I love you baby
I guess it's just because
You're so square
Baby I don't care
Baby I don't care
Baby I don't care care
Care care

Buddy Holly is one of/if not the best artists/musicians I've ever heard in my life. He had so much talent and was way ahead of his time. I personally think he was superior to all of the other singers during that time, even though they were great as well. I would give just about anything to see and hear him perform again. Continue to rest in peace Buddy. (1936 - 1959). We all miss you! You and your musical talent will always live on and will always be remembered. Rave on Buddy! :)

Elvis all day, every day. No. One. Comes. Close.

  13. B.... D....

This is a Elvis Presley song from his Jailhouse Rock film 1957. It it also in his Jailhouse Rock EP. Buddy Holly did a cover of it in 1958, one year later.

This song is a cover. Elvis did it first.

    B.... D....

    Buddy did it better

    B.... D....

@Lemmy Cash I disagree with your statement there

The picture on the cover of Rolling Stone is not that of Buddy though. It is of John Mueller, a Buddy Holly impersonator. At 1:06 in the video it is John Mueller NOT Buddy. Who in the hell makes these videos FFS?

  18. b.... d....

Pure class, pure perfection. Cheers buddy.

  19. J.... ....

I have no idea why a pic of Buddy impersonator John Mueller appears out of a sudden at 1:05 in this clip. All real Buddy Holly fans know how he looks like.Tons of Buddy Holly stuff here: www.buddyhollylives.info

  20. D.... B....

Elvis was great from 54 to 57 then he sucked for the last 20 years of his short life but he was the king for a while. However, Buddy wrote his own songs, lots of them, this is not one of them, still a great cover

  21. g.... h....

Buddy holly reminds me of the 3rd grade teacher

  31. R.... B....

    Brings back many memories!

  32. I.... K....

I d rather not compare buddy holly and elvis presley.
The both of them were wonderfull singers.
In my opinion Elvis was a more versatile singer but Buddy never got to have the time Elvis did to develop his style.
What a time and what talent.

  33. x.... ....

Elvis was more charismatic.Buddy's guitar work and Jerry Allison the drummer was a more explosive sound to me.Both Elvis and Buddy were equally great musicians in my opinion. My favorite Elvis songs were American Trilogy and Unchained Melody...the man had a it all and extremely handsome. Buddy Holly my favorites are, Not Fade Away,Peggy Sue, Maybe Baby.Buddy's songs had more raw energy due to Allison and Buddy's guitar playing, vocals

  34. E.... p....

My baby elvis presley copy that song
That not his ok cause that not right
Because it not his songs it my baby
Buddy holly that his BABE WHOO
Elvis Presley baby i don.t care don't belong to u honey ok u understand yes ok good

    E.... p....

This is a Elvis song. Leiber and Stoller wrote it for Elvis. Buddy Holly covered it.

  37. A.... A....

    ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  38. r.... k....

    The wonderful Buddy Holly!

  39. J.... ....

In a career lasting from the spring of 1957 until the winter of 1958-1959 -- less time than Elvis had at the top before the army took him (and less time, in fact, than Elvis spent in the army) -- Holly became the single most influential creative force in early Rock & Roll. Rock on, Buddy !!!

  40. R.... A....

    Wonderful!

  41. D.... N....

Buddy and Elvis were AWESOME !!!!!!!!!

  44. P.... S....

  45. J.... ....

Buddy Holly forever ! He had the best cover by far.

  48. r.... ....

I like both the Elvis and Buddy versions... different tones, different feelings

  49. F.... ....

Buddy was amazing...  Taken too soon,,  Way too soon. As well as Ritchie

    F.... ....

    Also the Bopper..

  50. m.... h....

Elvis' version is full of raw, animal sexuality where Buddy's is the song you could take home to mum. In my opinion the Elvis version (and the film clip) belongs hands down to Elvis the King Of Rock 'n Roll

  51. D.... f....

    buddy holly is the best

  52. S.... F....

elvis was way more versatile singer then buddy holly. and more charisma

  53. S.... J....

  57. D.... ....

    Not many views. A shame.

    D.... ....

I know...what is the deal here? Great tune!

  58. A.... F....

The boy I like just used this to tell me that I'm not the only one who gets butterflies 💕💓

  59. h.... ....

i feel sick when i think of, what he had up his sleeve.

    h.... ....

Michael Craig like what he still had to offer. I imagine a shitload.

    h.... ....

hacksdp3 I think about this everyday. I live in Lubbock area and realising who came from Lubbock and what he did gives me goosebumps everytime.

    h.... ....

Augustine Coronado probably would have gone into the technical aspects of music making and producing for Coral/Brunswick in the New York area. Maybe done some writing. The truth is his hits were becoming more and more scarce, as the ‘Tex-mex’ rockabilly sound was starting to sound dated in 1959. In late 1958, Holly began to experiment with strings, and released the single ‘It Doesn’t Matter Anymore’ in January. It was a big risk to release a lush pop song, as his audience was mostly the rock ‘n’ Roll buying-type, and it didn’t really pay off. It made its debut in and quickly fell off the charts. Only after his death did it become a big posthumous it.

    h.... ....

hacksdp3 The surface of his talent had barely been scratched. A few bad decisions by the people who managed his tour, a tired singer, an inexperienced pilot who had no idea of the weather or how to fly the plane. A catalogue of errors and we had the day the music died. I feel so sad for his wife even now, imagine finding out via the news your husband has died! At least his death changed how deaths were reported.. Next of kin had to know first.

    h.... ....

@JGC I've read he was trying to raise the money to have his own recording studio, one of the reasons he did his last tragic tour. Petty was withholding money owed and has a lot to answer for. Buddy had so many ideas and ambitions, what a bloody waste of life. RIP Charles Harding Holley, you'll always be the best.....

  60. V.... S....

Elvis sang this too, But Buddy was the best

    V.... S....

@Robin Markowitz Yeah, I heard when he invited Led Zeppelin to his house and they met, Elvis was sitting on the couch practicing some bass when they walked in. Bass is cool. I like standup bass more myself. I played it for a couple semesters in college.

    V.... S....

@Majik0715 I believe that had BUDDY HOLLY lived on - HE would have not only put out more wonderful songs BUT also HE was said to have an interest in producing other artists- in fact for one musical act - HE did help the EVERLY BROTHERS get popular- So all in all I am saying that HE would have possibly had so many artists out there along side himself that guys who adored HIM - most notably John Lennon - Paul McCartney - Mick Jagger - Keith Richards - might have felt too intimidated to even try to push for their fame- THINK IT OVER , Joe Nania

    V.... S....

@Michael Craig that was the Beatles at his home, not Led Zeppelin. Yes he was playing the bass when the Beatles were there.

    V.... S....

Holly's version was more low key compared to Elvis'.

    V.... S....

@Michael Craig Buddy didn't wrote this. He just covered it from Elvis. He covered Elvis but Elvis never covered Buddy.

  61. L.... L....

That was meant to be 1957, of course!

  62. L.... L....

I wonder if any of you folks have heard Queen's live version of this song? No need to debate about whose version is best, they are all good. Though Buddy Holly's lyrics are most clear. This is a great song, written by Leiber and Stoller (for Elvis) for the movie "Jailhouse Rock" in 1977. But Google Queen and watch Freddy Mercury do this number, if you are curious.

    L.... L....

@James Mathai I dont have Freddy. He got lost somewhere down the block! Just kidding! i dont hate him at all, as a person. He is a great vocalist for HIS songs. Queen were a technically great band, Freddy was a great singer. This kind of pure rockin' is Buddy's thing. Buddy would sound ridiculous singing "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Bicycle Song" or "Tie Your Mother Down". Also I just dont like to see femmy glammy type rockers. I never did like that gimmick stuff. To me, the men musicians I like to hear and see are guys that just rock, with no glammy image, just flat out rockin'. I like the Allman Brothers, Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Frank Marino, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, etc..Check these guys out, you will like them also. Freddy was great at his own style.

    L.... L....

@Michael Craig lol should have read what I wrote. But anyway I respect your opinion. I have listened to all these musicians, and agree that they're great. I prefer Buddy Holly's version of the song, but Queen is my favorite band.

    L.... L....

    Elvus' version, not even close

    L.... L....

@An Oasis Can in your opinion!

    L.... L....

    it's freddie.

  63. j.... h....

    THE GREAT MUSIC MASTER AN ALWAYS WILL BE }

  64. M.... ....

Buddy Holly is great but i prefer Elvis version

  65. d.... e....

Who was the king? Elvis or Buddy?  For me at least, Buddy or Jerry wrote a lot of their songs.  Elvis did not.  OK, Elvis was the first, that cannot be denied. Also Elvis did not have Jerry Allison.  The drumming on this is perfect.  It is as if the guitar and drums are played by the same person. Two inovators instead of Elvis' one.  I think Jerry was the force that backed up Buddys' early music. Although The Crickets later years did not have the same success as perhaps with Buddy, Jerrys' drumming still shone through.  The best rock and roll drummer of all time, because he was the first!

    d.... e....

Oh my little deluded American cousin. Why don't you just admit defeat!!..I really feel sorry for you. What can't you understand? Presley good looking old fashioned singer. Buddy Holly, pure rock, innovator genius. FULL STOP!!  Now f**k off, and stop pestering me. 'PLEASE!!

    d.... e....

@Holly Hawk Get off the drugs, moron.

    d.... e....

@***** - It's all good, Heather, and you absolutely have the right to prefer whichever you want. The other person I was dealing with before was just a nutbag - thus my responses. :) P.S. I like goats. My family used to have one and he was way cool. I wouldn't mind having another of my own someday. lol

    d.... e....

@***** - That's cool. Sorry about the momma goat who died, but the rest is cool. I like the personality of goats too - some remind me of the farm animal version of a cat. :)

    d.... e....

    Don't forget Chuck Berry...
    Elvis had it all.
If we could have mixed Buddy,Eddie Cochran,Chuck,Ritchie Valens,The Everly Brothers,we could have made Elvis.

  66. a.... ....

Another great song from my youth, thanks..

  67. O.... ....

Or as Buddy Holly once said "Without Elvis none of us would be here."

Usually Buddy Holly & Johnny Cash fans are those who have come late to loving this music and probably spent their early years loving the Beatles and rejecting Elvis.
Kind of like the punk rockers rejecting the sixties music later on. Same thing.

Closet Elvis fans that they are they dance around the Elvis flame with the sounds of the second tier in their ears.  Embrace the King and you will open the door to Elvis' influences and his love of R & B and Gospel, the music and musicians he heralded until the day he died. Read what B.B. King, Little Richard and James Brown had to say about Elvis.  Or pick up a book called "Race Rock & Elvis." Elvis always gave credit to his influences.

Hey if it wasn't for Elvis we wouldn't be reading this.

    O.... ....

    Jenny wren Well said.

    O.... ....

@JGC If your British have you see the show 'The winter dance party' worth seeing, I've seen it twice. Very sad at the end, mustn't forget the other 3....

    O.... ....

Lots of people liked Buddy, Johnny and all the other rockers at the same time as they liked Elvis.. Punk rockers did not hate the 60's music, they loved it. They loved garage band stuff, simple driving rock and roll, Punk rockers loved Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash..they loved the early Who. What they hated was.. Jimmy Page! They hated long complex songs, they hated progressive rock like Yes, and Jimmy Page was enemy #1 to them.

    O.... ....

@soozbandit68 Without Elvis, Buddy Holly would had stay playing country music. Why wasn't he recording rockabilly in 1953? Oh yeah, cause his boy Elvis wasn't there to show him how to play White rock n roll. The ignorance revisionist on Elvis is disgusting. This song right here is a cover of a Elvis tune. It's mind blowing how many Whites let Elvis go. It's sickening. No Elvis=No Buddy Holly.

    O.... ....

@Holly Hawk Well, you don't like Buddy Holly then because in this song, he is clearly imitating Elvis on the part when he sings, ''Baby I don't care''. Elvis invented rockabilly and then all the other whites followed him. He really was a pioneer in WHITE rock n roll. Oh, by the way, this song was originally done by Elvis Presley and cover by Buddy Holly a year later.

  68. D.... W....

From Pulp Fiction, Mia draws a rectangle in the air, though it's meant to be a "square".

  69. P.... H....

    teds dont need a king

  70. C.... W....

    C R A P!

     Elvis rules!

  71. r.... g....

    super  mooi van buddy

  72. b.... ....

Unfortunately it is record sales that determines who is the king of rock and roll. Buddy's songs moves me much more than Elvis.

    b.... ....

@kevin majorca so says a nobody, on the other Jimmy Paige says oh wait, you couldn't comprehend it anyways....

    b.... ....

@soozbandit68 There are a lot of songs that Buddy Holly didn't wrote either. Also, his main producer was Norman Petty who helped Buddy Holly a lot in the late 50s. Without Elvis, Buddy Holly would had been playing country music for most of his life and probably wouldn't change. Elvis was the main reason why Buddy Holly got into rock n roll in the first place. Elvis invented rockabilly which is what many of the White southerners started doing after they heard ELVIS PRESLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    b.... ....

This song is from Elvis. Buddy covered it one year later.

    b.... ....

Elvis is the King and that's that !! Elvis was the First one ever to make Rock n Roll BIG TIME- he is the Babe Ruth of rock n roll- Yes i love buddy & Chuck Berry better then Elvis BUT just like John Lennon once said - Before Elvis there was nothing !!!! "In Rock n Roll" that is- they all were great Bo Diddly, Bill Haily, Jerry Lee Lewis , Fats, and about 60 others too many to name they all were there and were great

    b.... ....

@me & you The real king of rock n' roll is Chuck Berry. The greatest singer in the world, according to Elvis, was Roy Orbison. His voice and range are unmatched. I am a big Buddy Holly fan. Elvis was a master entertainer.

  73. R.... C....

I hate it when great songs are so short.

    R.... C....

Allow me to be a little more succinct, Aubrey, The Real reason most songs were short. up until the Beatles came along, was: The Radio Recording Industry Of America [RRIA] deemed 3 Minutes [180 Seconds] the maximum time a 'Song' could hold the 'Listeners' Interest. AND more songs could be played On-Air within the hour, ergo more exposure to more Music..............More $$$$$ For You & Me. & That's A Fact Jack! ;)

    R.... C....

They had to fit on a 45rpm disc though so could only be 2 1/2 mins max.

    R.... C....

@David Robinson Nonsense. a 45 will hold 4 1/2 minutes. The reason songs were so short back then was to get airplay. 3 minutes was considered the longest you could go to make the most MONEY possible with a song. Longer than 3 minutes had it had to be exceptional to get on the radio. It wasn't until the 70's and FM radio that you had people playing anything longer. It had NOTHING to do with a 2 1/2 minute limit on 45,s because there WAS NO such limit.

    R.... C....

@Will Morrison: Not in the 1950s they couldn't. Most of the songs were cut on 78rpms and for 45s they didn't have micro grooves back then.

  74. w.... ....

When Elvis ruled, he was king!

  75. T.... ....

His drummer said they used a box and that is why the drumming sounded this way! Check out Paul McCartney Video on youtube that he did on Buddy Holly it is called The Real Buddy Holly Story its a ten part story its very good.

  76. N.... B....

    Go 'head on, Buddy Holly!

  77. M.... C....

I respect Buddy Holly, but Elvis THE KING

    M.... C....

Chuck Berry I believe was king, but due to his color back then they wouldn’t allow it. Elvis can suck a fart out of my ass Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry can play circles around that poser

    M.... C....

Erin Gavin There was Perry Como..lol. when Buddy Holly went to England he inspired guys like Jeff Beck, Keith Richards and others . Beetles are really paying tribute to the crickets, Graham Nash formed the Hollies after him. Dude could play.

    M.... C....

Holly wrote all his songs, Elvis, not so much.

    M.... C....

'Without Elvis, we'd of never made it' ~ Buddy Holly. When asked about rivalry in the business Presley said there was room for everybody. It's not comparing apples with apples anyway. They were two different styles of entertainers, are you seriously so stupid that you cant see that? We all have different talents, you for instance are a complete tool, now shut your ass and let your mouth speak.

    M.... C....

@T. Worthington Holly did not wrote all of his SONGS. Ignorant piece of shit of a FUCKING FOOL. You are a complete DUMBASS. This is a cover. This song was done first by Elvis Presley. This song was written by Lieber and Stoller for Elvis Presley. Now, your saying that Buddy wrote this one? HELL NO. Listen to the original version by Elvis Presley. Buddy did not wrote all of his songs but you are a dumbass, so you won't know. You probably don't know who the first president of the USA was.

  78. C.... M....

I remember 1959 my older brother coming home with this LP he said come and listen to this it was the BUDDY HOLLY STORY I was hooked.

  79. J.... S....

thanks Buddy for given my life so much pleasure.
    Greatings  from Holland.

    J.... S....

I say greetings from u.s.a from wells

  80. G.... ....

the drum is a guitar case

    G.... ....

wow, first time ive heard that. But Jeez, youre right!

    G.... ....

um, i dont think so. If you know about buddy and his music you will know that the drumming is the great j i allison and he's playing a cardboard box, if I remember correctly he saId it was an empty whisky box. I think J I s' interview is on you tube.

  81. D.... E....

Great, I wonder what percussion was used on this track, it doesn't sound like a drum kit ?

    D.... E....

it probably is a kit, i think he's just focusing on the toms, not a huge fan of the weird drums (like the ones on peggy sue) but meh i can deal, its still great stuff

    D.... E....

I believe they used a cardboard box for this, I'm not sure though.

    D.... E....

On the Not fade away song, they used the cardboard box so maybe did the same here too ???

  82. P.... W....

Great Track, still fresh & bright, Buddy I still remember reading of your death in the  paper on my way to work, (on a steam train to London].

  83. A.... z....

I love Buddy but Elvis was supernatural, he is the absolute God of Rock and Roll!

    A.... z....

    And Oliver's army!

    A.... z....

@Rafaz Alvitre sorry, Elvis not In the same class as BUDDY HOLLY!!!

    A.... z....

True. Buddy Holly can't even get near The King. And i love buddy but Elvis...
''Without Elvis none of us would be here.' -Buddy Holly'

    A.... z....

Elvis was the greatest there is no comparison Elvis was way more versatile then any other singer who do you think would go first in concert Buddy or Elvis I think it would be Buddy because Elvis would always sing last they said Elvis played what time and the other singer got there late and they said it's your turn they went back in the dressing room to get him and he was packing up they said what are you doing he said I'm not singing after him???

    A.... z....

King of Rock N Roll goes to Chuck Berry.

  84. P.... R....

Ohh Jeez Wayne! I'm 74 but I can remember this like yesterday. No one, but no one sang this like Buddy Holly!

    P.... R....

    thats beautiful.

    P.... R....

    You're so cool

    P.... R....

ya...but he left out the best verse!

  85. R.... K....

    BOX TROLLS

    R.... K....

I know. Thank you Box Trolls for introducing me to such an awesome song.

    R.... K....

    @glowworm2
    Amen!

  86. p.... j....

queen brought me here but still this is so much better!

    p.... j....

They'd be honored that they brought Buddy into your life.

    p.... j....

never liked queen although my wife does much prefer the Stones and Buddys version was great part of my youth

    p.... j....

I really love Freddie's version but I have to agree that this is better.

  87. A.... C....

    Meow, that is great!

  88. B.... S....

    I like bread and butter...
    I like toast and jam...
    First thing I heard

  89. D.... L....

    I like this song myself!

  90. D.... L....

I agree! Buddy Holly was more of a musician! Elvis Presley was more of an entertainer! Therefore Buddy should be the king of rock and roll not Elvis!

    D.... L....

    Elvis wasn't a songwriter.

    D.... L....

    +Jerry Stanaway sooo

  91. j.... ....

nor me,but according to to information on Holly thats what it stated ,it was most likely released on an Album in 61,information also stated that Holly wrote it and also recorded it first which is also wrong, considering that Elvis recorded it for Jailhouse Rock ,and it was written by Lieber & Stoller.nice to see yr on the ball..

  92. L.... A....

The real king of rock and roll is Buddy Holly.

    L.... A....

    Lorenzo A. Fernandez Jr.
    And Eddie Cochran
    They share the crown

  93. C.... M....

Im not sure how Holly recorded it in 1961 considering he died in 1959

  94. j.... ....

this song was written for Elvis by Leiber & Stoller not by Buddy Holly. It was written for the Film Jailhouse rock in 1957,Buddy Holly recorded it in 1961.

  95. B.... ....

    Ok, got you...I was wrong

  96. R.... ....

    It's John Mueller.

  97. 2.... ....

It is not Gary, even not Buddy,it is a player in the musical "The Buddy Holly Story"
