Hollens, Peter - Loch Lomond Lyrics

[Peter Hollens & David Archuleta:]
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

O you take the high road, and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

[Peter Hollens:]
The wee birdies sing and the wild flowers spring
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping

But the broken heart it kens, nae second spring again
Though the woeful may cease from their grieving

[Peter Hollens & David Archuleta:]
O you take the high road, and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

This is arguably the most famous Scottish tune! Far from "forgotten"!

  3. .... ....

    Loch Lomond

    By yon bonnie banks,
    And by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love
    Were ever want to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Oh! ye'll tak the high road and
     I'll tak the low road,
     And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love
     Will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

    'Twas then that we parted
    In yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond,
    Where in purple hue
    The Highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

Oh! ye'll tak the high road and
     I'll tak the low road,
     And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love
     Will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

    The wee birdie sang
    And the wild flowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping,
But the broken heart it kens
    Nae second Spring again,
Tho' the waeful may cease frae their greeting.

Oh! ye'll tak the high road and
     I'll tak the low road,
     And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love
     Will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

    ロッホ・ローモンド(三宅忠明:訳)

    あの美しい岸辺、
    あの美しい丘、
    ロッホ・ローモンド(湖)に日が照るところ、
    恋人とふたり、
    いつもかよった、
    美しい美しいロッホ・ローモンド(湖)の岸辺。

      おお、君は高い道を行け、
      ぼくは低い道を行く。
      スコットランドにはぼくが先に着く;
      だけど、恋人には二度と会えない、
      美しい美しいロッホ・ローモンド(湖)の岸辺で。

    ぼくたちが別れたのはあのときだった、
    あの谷の陰で、
    けわしいけわしいベン・ローモンド(山)の中腹で。
    ハイランドの山々が
    むらさきにかすみ、
    薄明かりの中に月が出ていた。

      おお、君は高い道を行け、
      ぼくは低い道を行く。
      スコットランドにはぼくが先に着く;
      だけど、恋人には二度と会えない、
      美しい美しいロッホ・ローモンド(湖)の岸辺で。

    小鳥が歌い、
    野の花が咲いていた、
    陽光の中に湖水が眠っている。
    だが、傷心の心で、
    来年の春を見ることは出来ない。
    苦悩する身でことばも交わせない。

      おお、君は高い道を行け、
      ぼくは低い道を行く。
      スコットランドにはぼくが先に着く;
      だけど、恋人には二度と会えない、
      美しい美しいロッホ・ローモンド(湖)の岸辺で。

I know you've been removing the end talk from some of your older videos recently (so we can playlist them and not have to skip the talking at the end if we only want to listen to the music), but can you also remove it from this one? Easily one of my favorite tracks from you.

This song/poem was first published in 1841, and its origins likely go back much further than that. No-one now living can claim credit for it.

  30. C.... W....

    Your talented!

  31. F.... H....

Your harmonies, are for the most part, very good. As for your critics, perhaps they don't understand the tradition of Dvorak, i.e., elevating folk music through the full resources of counterpoint. I offer this great arrangement of O Shenandoah, by the late James Erb. Please make sure you listen through the miraculous final verse.

OMG! This brings up a beautiful memory for me. When I was little my mother taught me a song. "...You take the high road, I'll take the low road, I'll be in Scotland before 'ya. On the the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond." Your rendition of it is absolutely amazing. THANK YOU!!

  48. C.... W....

I am personally insecure when it comes to my voice, but it is pretty good overall I was playing a VR game and I started singing to other people and it and they loved it that really helped boost my self confidence.

  54. T.... ....

Honestly as much as I love Peter's voice and talent it just sounds weird not hearing it sung in a Scottish accent like a lot of the words that are meant to be pronounced deliberately excessively Scottish just sound far too posh

  55. D.... J....

LOL well Peter Hollens you got another fan in the form of my mother after she heard me playing your songs from youtube on my google home mini, she went right out and bought a google home mini and got me to teach her how to use it, Her first request was "Ok Google Peter Hollens Folk Songs" she didn't get what she wanted until we figured that out that she wasn't hooked up to youtube premium after she was she hasn't stopped playing your songs since LOL.

  61. D.... A....

People really need to hear the backstory like Scotland, it’s as sad, beautiful and romantic as this song.

    It goes like this...
In 1745 two Jacobite Highland rebels who had been fighting to restore the last true Catholic King to the British throne were captured by government soldiers.
Catholicism had been on its way out in Europe since the reformation and to traditional people such as the clan folk, it represented the true, old Way of life.

The British reprisals for the 1745-6 risings were brutal. In what amounted to a genocide that depopulated the Highlands for two hundred years. This carried out by the secular/Protestant British government. The price these two soldiers would pay was no less harsh. One was to be set free to live a life on the run, a beggar, the other hanged. So the one who was to be executed gave to his friend a poem, a poem written to his true love who lived near Loch Lomond. The poem was the lyrics to this song.

Europe has many such forgotten tales.

my mom taught me this song when I was a little girl - we're not Scottish but my grand-mother was a nanny for a prominent Scottish Montreal family and that's where she learned and taught it to my mom. Mom said my grand-mother always spoke English with a slight Scottish brogue

  71. I.... D....

My favourite legendary song... sang by an absolute legend

  72. a.... ....

as a kid used to sing (bits of ) this in the car going from England to Scotland. Always thought the reference to high and low road was over the hills or the lowlands. Nice to know the original meaning (from comments).

  73. T.... 2....

So there's this song and "Red is the Rose". Any other songs that have the same melody and where did it originate?

  85. Y.... A....

This song holds a special place in my heart because it was the first song I performed as a solo, great job ❤️

  86. C.... C....

Should have stuck with the modal feeling and not used so many V-I...Good job, but the contemporary choral arrangement could have paid more tribute to the original melody, at least in the first section.

  87. D.... K....

@janet connor : I think it takes more for a good song than just simply a proper accent. Besides there are just like 60,000 people or so who actually speaks gaelic fluently. So I think there are few people out there who would notice the mismatch in pronunciation. Instead be proud of your folk songs, because they are not such a desecration to the human ear like our folks songs (Austria)

    P.... H....

    Thankyou for the memories 🤗😭

    P.... H....

    Wait!
you made a mistake at 1st verse.
It is not "will never meet again" but "were ever wont to gae"
which means "ever used to go"
I think at least 1st verse shouldn't be such a sorrowful thing by the context.

    I wish you better songs
    from South Korea~! ^*^

    P.... H....

I hope you enjoy my a cappella songs on my channel, too. :) I like your version, here.

    P.... H....

@Iain Duncan Oh, please. No, it's not. And you will never change that fact: We have people here of Scottish descent, who are Americans ONLY by birth.. don't ever forget that. Including "Craig" whom I date.
