I like to think of it as Pearl Jam and their album, "Backspacer." When Pearl Jam made that album, they aimed for a more New Wave sound when it came to the genre. And that's what happened. Backspacer was different because instead of following the politically-inspired music and grunge music they had written before, they went with a new, more common sound found today while still maintaining the album so that it sounded like Pearl Jam. I hope I am making sense here. The point is just because a album from a old band sounds new, that it isn't automatically bad. Backspacer had some great songs and was an overall great album, while still maintaining to be very different from Riot Act, Ten, Vs., etc. Overall, Rock music is very vast and different across the spectrum. Lex Hives proved to be a new point for The Hives because to showed us a new side of them with a more revival/Pop sound to them. It's not their best album, but it's not the worst album out there. They just aimed for a different sound and it ended up being a success for them. They tried something new and in return, they succeeded.

They actually referred to themselves as a punk rock band around the time they made this. Maybe they did later too I'm not sure, but they hadn't quite gotten into the garagy stuff yet here.
