Highwaymen, The - Jim, I Wore A Tie Today Lyrics

[Willie Nelson:]
Jim, Jim
I wore a tie today
The first one that I ever wore
You'd have said that I look like a dummy at the dry goods store

[Johnny Cash:]
Ooh, Jim, Jim
The preacher said a lot of things
But I didn't hear a word he said
My mind kept wanderin' back down the trail
Back to the good times we had

[Cash, lead and Nelson, harmony]
Ridin' herd, through the sun and the rain
Pannin' for gold on the cuff
We did everything in the books, I guess
And a lot that they never thought of

Ooh, Jim, Jim
So you're ridin' on ahead
Well, if that's how it's goin' to be
When you reach those streets paved with gold
Jim, stake a claim out for me

[Cash spoken]
We did everything we could do for you, Jim
But, your fever just wouldn't go down.

[Nelson spoken]
So we put you in the wagon, Jim
And this mornin' we got you back to town.

[Cash spoken]
But, when we got here you were gone, Jim
And there wasn't anything anybody could do.

[Nelson spoken]
They dressed you up in a fancy suit and a neck-tie
So, today, we wore one too.

[Cash lead and Nelson harmony]
Ridin' herd, through the sun and the rain
Panin' for gold on the cuff
We did everything in the books, I guess
And a lot that they never thought of

Ooh, Jim, Jim
So you're ridin' on ahead
Well, if that's how it's goin' to be
When you reach those streets paved with gold
Jim, stake a claim out for me

    Jim, Jim
    I wore a tie today
The first one that I ever wore
You'd have said that I look like a dummy at the dry goods store

    Ooh, Jim, Jim

And a lot that they never thought of

Well, if that's how it's goin' to be

My Dad passed 25 July 2012. After everyone had left, I sat alone in his house. I had bought him this CD, & I sat there & played this song over & over while letting out all the grief I had been holding in all day.
Still miss you, Dad. Stake a claim for me! I'll be along in a few more years.

my brother is Jim.. I would not wear a tie for him

    7.... ....

My brother and I fought like cats and dogs all our lives and he was estranged from the family when he died.
His so called "friends" just dumped him at the hospital and never showed for the funeral.
This song was running through my head through the whole service, even though he was a David and not a Jim.
Believe me,try to fix whatever is wrong between you.
Once they start throwing dirt on the coffin,it is too late.

  9. 7.... ....

    miss you Glynn

I remember when Reba's band was being buried, one news account mentioned "They sang a song appearently written for this service, called Jim,I wore A Tie Today".
You'd think an entertainment writer would have known better.
