Hiatt, John - Through Your Hands Lyrics
You were dreaming on a park bench
'Bout a broad highway somewhere
When the music from the carillon
Seemed to hurl your heart out there
Past the scientific darkness
To an angel bending down
To wrap you in her warmest coat
[Chorus:]
And you ask, "What am I not doing?"
She says "Your voice cannot command.
In time, you will move mountains,
And it will come through your hands."
Still you argue for an option
Like you wouldn't know a burning bush
If it blew up in your face
Yeah, we scheme about the future
And we dream about the past
When just a simple reaching out
Might build a bridge that lasts
[Chorus]
So whatever your hands find to do
You must do with all your heart
There are thoughts enough
To blow men's minds and tear great worlds apart
There's a healing touch to find you
On that broad highway somewhere
To lift you high
As music flying
Through the angel's hair.
Don't ask what you are not doing
Because your voice cannot command
In time we will move mountains
And it will come through your hands

Hiatt, John Through Your Hands Comments
i thought it was kate bush on back up vocals, but it is karen peris.
such a beautiful song!
Karen Peris from The Innocence Mission. Loved their first album.
I love all their albums. She is easily one of my favorite songwriters of my lifetime.
I thought that David Crosby wrote this song?
My husband proposed ( in a tent in town park) to this song being sung at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival inn1993❤️
today is our 24th anniversary❤️
Amazing lyrics, another great song from the criminally underrated John Hiatt. I love this guy's music.
You were dreaming on a park bench
'Bout a broad highway somewhere
When the music from the carillon
Seemed to hurl your heart out there
Past the scientific darkness
Past the fireflies that float
To an angel bending down
To wrap you in her warmest coat
And you ask, "What am I not doing?"
She says "Your voice cannot command.
In time, you will move mountains,
And it will come through your hands."
Still you argue for an option
Still you angle for your case
Like you wouldn't know a burning bush
If it blew up in your face
Yeah, we scheme about the future
And we dream about the past

THANK YOU💚👍✌✊
I was lucky enough to be sitting right in front of him when he sang this acoustic on tour in 2005 - made me cry...
My Dad is Right, John Hiatt should be cherished.
I suppose it was some issue...as to why they chose Don Henley, covering this, for the Movie 'Michael'...
anyone know why?
You tell me, Hiatt's version is simply the Best! He knows how to sing this song, because he wrote it.
Henley is a HUGE well known mainstream Star.. Hiatt is known mostly By Seekers and Pilgrims of Music..
Oh I know but, he should never have sung this beautiful John Haitt song, it does not fit his wellknown mainstream voice....Let him sing his great Eagles songs, please....David Crosby sings In Your Hands too and to be honest , with not a bad result. But hey, John Hiatt, he's the man! Love his songs and lyrics, I must be a pilgrim or a seeker ;).
Adoro questo brano...c'è una versione stupenda tratta dal live del 1990
one of the most beautiful songs, ever
