Harry Connick, Jr. - Danny Boy Lyrics

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling
It's you, It's you must go and I must bide

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
It's I'll be here in sunshine, or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so

But when ye come and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, and dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me

And I shall hear tho' soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me

  7. A.... M....

I first saw Harry Connick Jnr live at the RDS in Dublin Ireland around May 1991 when I was 5 months pregnant with my daughter Ella. I was deeply moved by his performance of " A Nightengale Sang In Berkley Square" on The Terry Wogan Show on BBC television shortly before the concert and was so excited to be there.
At the concert Harry was playing all the" Rat Pack" greats with full big band backing but when he sang Danny Boy it was just his voice as he played the piano and you could have heard a pin drop in the audience. I remember being so choked up with emotion at the time it will stay with me always.

  8. S.... ....

@00:20 “Oh Danny boy, Danny boy the pipes the pipes are calling” holy shit that’s what Morrie on Goodfellas was singing to Henry Hill before he was killed.

    メンフィスベルを思い出す。日本でのコンサートにも行ったよな。大好きでした。

  10. T.... B....

I used to watch Memphis Belle with my grandfather. He was Irish and Danny Boy was his favorite song. I would sit on his lap and watch the movie, often falling asleep to this song on him. My uncle sang Danny Boy at his funeral. I will always remember my grandfather.

Memphis belle version should be the true and only

    C.... B....

@305 Nugga I watched that movie countless times growing up- and still watch it when I feel overwhelmed. It reminds me of my grandfather who served in WWII and of simpler times (the 1990's). God bless all of you. It brightens my world to know that there are men that still recognize art and beauty whether in this song or one of the greatest films of the 1990s.

  18. K.... R....

    reminds me of memphis belle

He's not a native of New Orleans. He pretends to come from there. He's a native of Weston, CT, where he attended public school from 1970-1982 and is pictured in all the yearbooks for that time. Boo fraud! Why does he have to lie?

If you were from ct you would claim another place too trust me. I’m from ct and it sucks here

    I.... S....

Harry's father was the District Attorney for NOLA from 1973 to 2003. Harry was born in '67. What kind of yearbook would a 3 yr old have been in? He did move to NY for college in 85.

People have a REAL high opinion of you, I see:

Well here’s a real coprophilic blast from the past.

Welcome to slabbed comrade Carla. There is always the risk of flying elbows and harsh words here, govern yourself accordingly!

Let’s get to what condition your condition is in.

People say all sorts of stupid and/or untrue things on the internet.

I wouldn’t recommend getting too worked up over the electrons wasted by anyone posting under a screenname such as “I Smell Poop” or similar. The poster “I Smell Poop” was already outed here as a real POS who happened to be full of the same and was summarily dealt with in the preceding comments. Then the goats and the goatherders got loose and were caught chewing on the wiring and the cables and the routers and the gateways and the Domain Name Servers; ‘purt near the blogs entire foundation! And then that outing of pooflinger “I Smell Poop” got a little less easy to understand. You may rest assured though, as not many here are buying what I Smell Poop is selling anymore.

    I.... S....

@I Smell Poop I used to love Harry Connick jr. so much until I saw his behaviour on whatever signing show competition he was on. Didn't like his personality at all. I can completely believe that he lied about it. I do know his father is from New Orleans. During Hurricane Katrina he did have an amazing redeeming quality though, I saw him walking through those Waters with a boat behind him he saw a naked man don't know why the man was naked butts on him on his porch very very thin black man on his porch and Harry Connick jr. Took his own shirt off gave it to that man carried him through the water and put him in the boat and actually drug him to safety through the water. However even though I don't like his attitude on his TV show he does have an amazing voice

  20. J.... T....

this song remainds me of Murakamis novel 'Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World'

  27. L.... T....

As a teen I wondered what made this song so special for my father to have as many versions of it as he could get. At 18, one day I was alone in the house and decided to listen to all of them. It made the song sound timeless and more beautiful than ever. Then I had a premonition: I was going to be the father of a boy, just one, and name him Daniel. Seven years later my own Danny Boy was born and the song was proved right: I love him so... Harry Connick Jr has been one of my favorite singers for a long time now. Yet, I didn't know he had recorded this song. Of all the recordings of Danny Boy (my dad would be amazed at the number of versions I've managed to round up) my favorite was Joan Baez's. Now it's a toss up with Harry Connick Jr. I wish I could send him a very warm "Thank you, Harry"

    L.... T....

you just snapped a 2 yr depression I had...your comment about why your dad had so many versions of the same song struck a chord. Prayers tonight for all the Danny boys, yours included.

    L.... T....

I've only seen this comment now. Thank you for it. You're very kind.

    L.... T....

my kids went through the same thing.... I listened to every version I could find... They love the song now.

    L.... T....

I have also heard many versions of this song and my favourite is by Sinead o'Connor in a live tv performance I'm the late luge show in dunk.
    it I'd on YouTube.

  28. G.... G....

My all time favorite version of this song. Years ago, heard it on a college radio station while driving. Pulled over in the first driveway I saw, called the DJ and asked who sang it. Bought the Connick CD the next day. Breathtaking phrasing and emotion.

    G.... G....

you brightened my day with your comment

  29. F.... ....

  30. W.... ....

Shine choices Robinson thanks for this I feel the same way when I listen to :') it's beautiful I don't want to lose my parents, my dad to showed me this song and I'm happy for that, whoever created this song is a true Angel, what a timeless masterpiece

    W.... ....

The song was written in 1910 by English lawyer Fredrick Weatherly, there is also a male version of the song called Eily Dear. Weatherly wrote thousands of songs and had approx 1500 published. The melody is older dating back to the mid 1800s and is called the Londonderry Air, it was penned by a Scottish woman called Jane Ross. The Londonderry air is the national anthem of Northern Ireland in the Olympic and Commonwealth games. The original lyrics of the Londonderry Air are as follows..
    Londonderry Air
    Lyrics

Would God I were the tender apple blossom
That floats and falls from off the twisted bough
To lie and faint within your silken bosom
Within your silken bosom as that does now.
Or would I were a little burnish'd apple
For you to pluck me, gliding by so cold
While sun and shade you robe of lawn will dapple
Your robe of lawn, and you hair's spun gold.
Yea, would to God I were among the roses
That lean to kiss you as you float between
While on the lowest branch a bud uncloses
A bud uncloses, to touch you, queen.
Nay, since you will not love, would I were growing
A happy daisy, in the garden path
That so your silver foot might press me going
Might press me going even unto death.

  33. J.... M....

One of the most heartfelt, and emotion invoking renditions for me to date... and I've heard many! Beautiful!

    J.... M....

This is beautiful!  The only other untouchable version in my opinion, is that of Eva Cassidy - another so underrated musician and singer with the most beautiful of any female voice I've ever heard!

hey any idea where i can find the up beat version of this song from memphis belle.

    a.... ....

I wish, I’ve been searching for it but no luck yet.

  48. u.... ....

How cool is that!! Yes most of the B-17's were in fact airworthy, although one was damaged in an accident while filming. In addition I belive Duxford used one from it's museum as a static B-17 for exterior shots. Obivously WW2 footage was also used and spliced into the film. At present in the US three B-17's are in the process of being restored to flying condition.

  49. i.... m....

^ i have to agree with you there, my dads friend played in that movie or so he tells me but still the planes were mostly air worthy

  50. i.... m....

the movie Memphis Belle is one of my favourite war time moves as not very many special effects and my favourite actor is the man who play rascal in the bull turret, i love the joke he says

  51. u.... ....

Memphis belle was Harry's 1st movie (playing a B-17 tail gunner). The movie itself was a composite of incidents that occured during 1943-45 in Europe flying B-17's. It's best feature was the 5 airworthy B-17's used in the movie, along with P-51's and German 109's(actually Spanish built 109's). Flying scenes were terrific (no CGI bullshit), but the movie itself was rather a let down.

  52. L.... D....

    love this song x

  53. f.... ....

    Good song.

  54. B.... ....
