Harry Chapin - Let Time Go Lightly Lyrics

I let time go lightly when I'm here with you,
I let time go lightly when the day is through.
I keep a watch on time when I've have work to do,
I let time go lightly with you.

Morning, a time for breaking ground and sowing seeds,
and yet we give up our sunshine
so we can buy what we need.
That leaves the evening, to share a fire with a friend or two,
to lose sight of the hours
To go lightly with you

I let time go lightly when I'm here with you,
I let time go lightly when the day is through.
I keep a watch on time when I've got work to do,
I let time go lightly with you.

Old friends, they mean much more to me than the new friends,
Cause they can see where you are,
and they know where you've been.
Music, has been my oldest friend, my fiercest foe,
cause it can take me so high,
(High.....) Yes it can make me so low.

When I was a child my mother would help me along
She'd rock me to sleep and sing me a song.
So I learned to love the music of all the tunes in my mind
the changing of chords, the rhythm of time.

I let time go lightly when I'm here with you,
I let time go lightly when the day is through.
I keep a watch on time when I've got work to do,
I let time go lightly with you.

Yes I let time go lightly with you, and a fire, and a friend or two
With you and a fire and a friend or two
A friend or two and you

  2. P.... N....

What a marvellous compliment. Time goes lightly when i'm with you. Simply beautiful.

  3. g.... c....

I think this performance was really done by Tom Chapin, wonderfully.

    g.... c....

    Actually, it's Harry's brother Steve.

  4. B.... N....

A musical genius! Far surpassing all the “greats” of that time. Yes including Dylan, Croce, Beatles, Denver, Simon & Gar...
Likely because he ignored the music industry form. I never appreciated him til now!

  5. P.... ....

How many popular musicians have a cellist on tour with them? I love that. It adds so much.

  6. B.... C....

    Excellent!!!

  7. J.... ....

Do people realize that singer his brother?

    J.... ....

Yes Steve not only sang it but he also wrote it. In concert I heard Harry say "this song pisses me off cause I should have written it"

    J.... ....

    Not till now. 😊

    m.... ....

One of my favorites, beautiful vocals!

    m.... ....

Thanks, I knew it didn't sound like Harry.  I never knew that.

    m.... ....

His brothers Steve and Tom were always with him on concert tours and commonly sang a couple of songs.

  18. D.... C....

This doesn't sound like Harry's voice, though.

    D.... C....

    It isn't,, it's Steven's Harry couldn't hit that pitch...

    D.... C....

This is his brother, Steve singing

  19. T.... C....

I heard harrys Flowers as are Red as a young teenager hooked ever since inspired my life

  23. G.... F....

I miss his music and his wisdom. Loved his music then and more so now because there will be no more.

  24. D.... ....

Wow, how the mind remembers.  As I listen to this song I can "hear" where the 8-track faded out....KA-CHUNK- and faded back in as it split over 2 tracks.  What a great storyteller and musician.  I sure do miss him.

    D.... ....

I hated those songs being split on the 8=track. I spent about an hour copying the song to a cassette so I didn't get the fade out -- KA-CHUNK -- fade in. Loved the songs.

  25. J.... L....

We lost another Angel that we did not deserve to have! R.I.P. Harry you brought beauty into this ugly world!!!

John Langley I was fortunate to see Harry in concert twice .I was such a huge fan . I remember where I was when I heard of his tragic death .I was stunned ,was as if someone punched me in the gut .I couldn’t breathe , I was at work & had to wait until I arrived home .I felt such tremendous sadness, I was too young to understand death I haven’t listened to Harry for awhile . I needed Harry solace & completely uninterrupted time.I feel transported back when I first saw Harry I was 15 yrs .The second time I was 20yrs old .Only recently I have learned ,to understand death .Harry also supported hunger relief . Life was so simple then .Harry would have hated the world , as it is now . Though I honestly believe Harry would be writing us , words to stay positive in the madness . thx

@Marylee Macpherson I've wondered alot lately about what Harry Chapin would think and say about the world today. Thanks for sharing your story. I was 14 when he crossed over. I loved his music and I still cry when I hear him singing. He had a way of reaching into your soul.

    J.... L....

Tammie Parrish Miller thank you for sharing I just awoke to see your text. The sun is almost up as I watched rise with blue sky We still have a snow but today going to be warmest day 15 C. Sometimes we can never understand at the time when we lose someone we love when someone says that was gods plan I used to think oh go 🦆 off. I’m in pain I'm hurting I still cry when I hear his music & nobody but me understands my pain. Then a couple of yrs ago I had the Internet 2 yrs to be exact then I found out where Harry was buried & this brought me comfort .We both were so young impressable naive to the atrocities of the world be so young is always the awkward stage. But in our little world all that didn't matter because we had Harry Chapin & his stories we become immersed in his storytelling & the music how fortunate we're we our lives might not be so happy move of this mattered we would listen to Harry storytelling & we would feel such joy .Then he died & it shattered our young souls we felt such grieve nobody understand or cared which was even worse. We felt abandoned.Until recently I hadn't listened to Harry since the 1994 a particular very. bad time in my life .I surpressed my feelings then recently I listened to our Harry I made sure I would not be interrupted I wanted to listen to his music in solitude I knew I would cry which was a welcome change Harry allowed me to become vulnerable again just like we were as teenagers I felt relief sorrow & happiness I felt free .I now believe Harrywas placed on this world besides his living relationships with his family , his world hunger causes, his music helps us now to get through all the turbulent times, economical times the fall of integrity corruption is the new normal not only hostility in the world but not to far from where we reside .2yrs after Harry died decided I wanted to live & work in quiet isolated places filled with the beauty of nature .Fortunately I was able to fulfill these dreams, not for monetary nope but for living & working in some of the remotest places in 🇨🇦Canada Arctic .I also for periods of time lived in some beautiful cities.Harry reinforced to be compassionate helping others & feeding the homeless & other invisible people. This always made me feel good inside. since reconnecting with Harry I have slowly starting to realize being addicted to newspapers for the past 30 yrs now is not such a good thing. I feeling more at peace again with nature .At the moment I live on a farm, to learn to block out the never-ending doom& gloom media .I still volunteer, but after reading your touching text I ended writing a long letter . Thank you for opening my eyes to pay attention & not let the horrors of the world affect our daily lives .funny I haven't owned a tv in 6 years. Please join me on f/b mary lee mac phersin

  29. B.... S....

I went to college with Tom, at Plattsburgh, and all 3 brothers spent a lot of time there singing in the college lounge...it was WONDERFUL!!!! I also rermember the time THE CHAPIN BROTHERS...along with father, Jim, played a sold out concert at Hawkins Hall, in Plattsburgh, in the middle 60s. Jim was an absolute incredible drummer as well.

  30. A.... C....

Yes sung by Steve Chapin and also written by Steve Chapin, Harry's baby brother, musical director, piano player, songwriter, arranger and producer.
Steve still tours with the original Harry Chapin Band as The Steve Chapin Band.
    Thanks for the correction

  31. T.... L....

  32. J.... M....

Beautiful! Makes me feel so mellow <3

  33. o.... ....

One of the best Live albums ever!!! I was lucky enough to see Harry at college. It was fantastic!!

  34. C.... H....

Such a simple but profound piece!

  35. S.... ....

Wow, that's pretty extreme. I don't think he wanted anyone to go out & kill himself when he wrote it. It's normal to feel sad or melancholy, but don't waste your life for God's sake. If nothing else, go get involved & feed the needy like Harry C. dedicated himself to doing. But please don't waste it.

  36. p.... a....

have a couple of wines and just sing to his music! My children and my granddaughter all know his music and I spread the word any chance I get! He was just so much "The Master Storyteller!" Peace all, Peter Arnone Jr

    p.... a....

peter arnone I'm so happy I'm not the only Harry Chapin fan....

He was racing to a concert on Long Island when he was struck by an eighteen wheeler. The cause of the accident was due to the car's inability to accelerate at times and come up to speed. It was an older Volkswagen Rabbit he was driving and apparently it was a problem Volkswagen knew about but never did anything about. His wife Sandy sued Volkswagen and che news! To this day I have my Harry Chapin Hour at home where I

  38. G.... ....

My reference was to the fact that he lost his life as the result of a motor vehicle crash. It was never determined if a heart attack preceded or followed the accident. "Murder" is at the hands of another person. "Killed" is death from an unexpected and usually, unnatural cause. Sorry if you were misdirected by the reference.

  39. t.... ....

Another incredible bit of writing from Harry! Rest in peace you wonderful human!

  40. C.... O....

Beautiful, just discovered this music :))))

  41. C.... ....

Thank you, Golumkiman. I was wondering what was going on! :-)

  42. B.... S....

This song was, actually, sung by Harry's brother Steve on this album.

    @5thcorps

Ah yes and now is the time to smile, love, and let time go lightly, and having done so shall we never look to our wrist, the wall, or even Big Ben. Be it we remember that time is an idea meaningless at that, and happiness is not controlled by three arms whom up to now decided our life. let us remember the lesson in this -That even if you are a slave to ol' Ben, when with a friend, lover, or even stranger who's day we could brighten, let us 'Let time to lightly!'

  44. 5.... ....

    Now that's a comment!

It was the fall of 1979 amid the color of the leaves when I interviewed Harry Chapin on a college campus. It was just prior to one of his concerts to benefit World Hunger. We talked while he ate dinner and I was impressed with his intense personality and his passion to feed the hungry. I became a fan of his ability to tell a story in song. I was deeply saddened when he was killed. Each autumn, his songs still come back to mind when the leaves turn color and wood smoke fills the air.
