Harris, Emmylou - Sin City Lyrics

This old town is filled with sin
It will swallow you in
If you've got some money to burn
Take it home right away
You've got three years to pay
But Satan is waiting his turn
The scientists say
It will all wash away
But we don't believe any more
Cause we've got our recruits
And our green mohair suits
So please show your I.D. At the door
This old earthquake's gonna leave me in the poor house
It seems like this whole town's insane
On the thirty-first floor a gold plated door
Won't keep out the Lord's burning rain

A friend came around
Tried to clean up this town
His ideas made some people mad
But he trusted his crowd
So he spoke right out loud
And they lost the best friend they had
This old earthquake's gonna leave me in the poor house
It seems like this whole town's insane
On the thirty-first floor a gold plated door
Won't keep out the Lord's burning rain
On the thirty-first floor a gold plated door
Won't keep out the Lord's burning rain

Harris, Emmylou Sin City Comments
  1. S.... T....

Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. In a perfect world they would have been stars bigger than the sky. In this world? This world didn't deserve them.

    A religious experience.. 🙏

This song is about the one of the executives of a record company that beat the one or both the writers out of money in a record contact. I like this version but the Flying Burritos Bros did it best. And it's "Lord's burning REIGN "

cornball video..but a super cover of Gram Parsons, tribute to L.A.

  7. A.... D....

There’s a version with Gram and Emmy out there. It’s great.

  8. M.... D....

Sounds like Jim Lauderdale singing harmony Emmylou just knocks it up into the heavens...still play this seems like we need it today more than ever

Thank you for posting... a really nice job with the video; for me, art is to evoke emotion and I cried when listening, thank you for posting and thank you Ms. Harris, words can't really express....

“And with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. “ 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 ESV / 7

Note: For all the loud and proud Atheists out there, please keep in mind I'm just quoting a quote, and staying in theme with the song. Have a GREAT DAY! 8-)

    good stuff.

Crystal clear Emmylou voice, solid harmony, and the Hot Band make this the reference version. Check out the KD Lang Dwight Yoakum version for the best male voice take on this classic GP song

If that song wasn't prescient, what is . . . wow. It sure speaks to us these days. I love EmmyLou but like the Gram Parsons' Flying Burrito Brothers version better. So tragic that so many of our brilliant young musicians died at such very young ages. Who knows what they might have achieved had they lived longer.

    S.... D....

I think this one of the most underrated songs--a true gem

  16. S.... D....

So beautiful. But we're no longer thinking of Los Angeles, but D.C.

The gold plated door on the 34th floor won't keep out the Lord's burning rain.

    Is that George Jones ?

    l.... t....

    Clay C.
Most likely Rodney Crowell . . . He is a wonderful singer in his own right and went on to a successful solo career after his time with Emmylou Harris.

    l.... t....

It was bluegrass singer John Starling, of The Seldom Scene.

    l.... t....

John starling from seldom scene - he was a surgeon as well !

  18. l.... t....

    Jeez what a tearjerker

  19. J.... C....

One of my favorites of hers where her voice and harmonies so shine. Underrated song.

  20. S.... G....

    Wow! Timeless!! Oxo

OMG what a song, what a singer ..blowing me away , touching my soul tks EmmyLou

  22. D.... L....

Man what beautiful harmonies, her voice, sweet, one of her greatest jobs....Thanks God for Emmylou!!Regards from Argentina.

  23. S.... W....

Even if this is slowed, I can hear her voice as clear as a bell and it is definately the voice of angels...  I actually like this version...  Slowed and everything!

  24. D.... M....

    Harmony at best.

  25. J.... L....

Whatever this was recorded from, it's WAY too slow.  Like turning a 4 minute song into a 4:30 long song.  The voices are all wrong, sounds like they're winding down to a stop.  Put your CD or LP on and compare it to this, you'll see what I mean.

    J.... L....

Yep, you're exactly right, it hardly sounds like Emmylou - this recording just doesn't do her voice justice at all

  26. b.... ....

I got into Emmy Lou when i heard her doing the back ground vocals on Bob Dylans (Desire Album) what a talent and a great voice. His Bobness was very impressed with her.too.

  27. B.... ....

Hi Chuck, thanks for writing, you are right, 'the good, they die young'. Makes me think of John Denver, R.I.P. His voice always gave me 'good bumps'. May God bless you Chuck, Louise

  28. C.... V....

Gram Parsons, wrote such great songs and this is so nice, with the 3 harmonies.
    The good, they die young

  29. B.... ....

Hi Chuck! You are right! Emmylou is 1 of the FEW female singers that can actually give me 'goose bumps'. Thanks for writing, God bless you, friend!

  30. C.... V....

What a beautiful voice, certainly one on a very short list of singers,M/F, of any genre, recording today. It's just so pure.

  31. S.... H....

Elite Hotel is the best Emmylou album, easy

  32. B.... ....

Hi Cedrick, I agree with you awesome comment! May God bless you! Louise

  33. B.... ....

Hi Hugh, your comment is correct, sweet & much appreciated! God bless you! Louise

  34. H.... L....

Pure and sweet. Country music at it's best.

  35. c.... v....

I still rate this song a great classic from the day grams first recorded it.

  36. M.... B....

This song is haunting. Emmylou's voice is haunting. What a perfect mix.

  37. 2.... ....

@coolram52 You are right about the last verse. When Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman wrote this song Emmylou was Grams girlfriend. And when she sings this, after all these years, you can still hear how much she misses him. Gram died way to young. Thissong brings back many memories for me. Most of them good. But what a long time ago that was.
