Hank Williams - The Log Train Lyrics

If you will listen
A song I will sing
About my daddy
Who ran a log train

Way down in the southland
In old Alabam'
We lived in a place
That they called Chapman Town

And late in the evening
When the sun was low
Way off in the distance
You could hear the train blow

The folks would come runnin'
and mama would sing
Get the supper on the table
Here comes the log train

Every morning
At the break day
He'd grab his lunch bucket
And be on his way

Winter or summer
Sunshine or rain
Every morning he'd run
That old log train

A sweatin' and swearin'
All day long
Shoutin' get up the oxens
Keep movin' along

Load'er up boys
'cause it looks like rain
I've got to get rollin'
This old log train

This story happened
A long time ago
The log train is silent
God called dad to go

But when I get to heaven
To always remain
I'll listen for whistle
On the old log train

Wonder what Lon would have thought about being killed off in the last verse. The story goes that hank went to see Lon on Christmas day of 52 but Lon wasn't home. Hank left a box of chocolates and he wrote anote on the cellophane and left it. Lon as i recollect reading kept the cellophane till he died.

  39. 0.... ....

What a shame to see those giant trees, bigger around than the engine itself, cut down for packing crates and pig stys.

  40. M.... T....

    So bittersweet <3

  41. B.... S....

My countrymen have been replaced by their own government

    B.... S....

    Sweet name

  42. P.... ....

A "log train" can mean either a string of logs chained together, drawn by oxen... or an actual train. The song seems to refer to both, but I guess plenty of men did both jobs...

    P.... ....

    That’s really interesting

    You know another thing

I had heard hanks dad died when he was young

But I guess fathers don’t always have to be biological

  43. R.... B....

Thanks For Sharing This Is One Of My Favorite Hank Williams Songs

    L.... M....

    You got that right!

  53. B.... B....

Wonderful song love the old songs

  54. T.... U....

What's strange about this song is in the song he said "God called Dad to go" well Elonzo Huble "Lon" Williams (Hank's father who did indeed run a log train) didn't die until 1970 and as everyone knows Hank died in 1953

    T.... U....

Hank's mother claimed his father was dead starting in the late 1930s.

    T.... U....

I think he was maybe in an asylum or hospital for a long long time

    T.... U....

The Unforgotten -Hanks dad, Lon Williams was in WW I. He was shell shocked and spent 8 years in the VA hospital. During this time Lilly got tired of him, divorced him then told Hank his Dad had died. Hank was seven. He was raised without a dad. Lon was 31 when Hank was born, was 70 when he died. The Log Train was a KWKH radio demo, Shreveport, La. Recorded Dec 3, '52. His last recording.
    ,

  55. W.... S....

I'm actually kin to Hank Williams Sr and Hank Williams Jr.

  56. t.... r....

This might be one of my favorites from Hank!

  57. J.... M....

Hank's dad actually outlived him, but he spent years in a VA hospital for a WW1 injury. His mom divorced him and told people he had died. He eventually recovered and remarried, giving birth to half siblings of Hank.

this is real country music not nfake shit :)

    D.... ....

No fake shit here...Just real, true-blue shit

    D.... ....

The problem with new country singers trying to sound Traditional is they use ultra modern recording techniques.
If they would record on mono 8 or 16 track with reverb it would sound so much better and archaic.

    D.... ....

    'Stoplight Kisses' by Cactus Blossoms.The
best version on YouTube has drums.
They're from Minnesota & sound just like 50's Country.

  65. C.... A....

When Hank came home in December of 52,  he went to a Church service and all the folks ask him to sing some of his other songs,  like Jambalaya and so on,  but he said he couldn't do those songs in here.   so every one went down to the Taft's store in Greenville to listen to him and that log train song was the last song he did that afternoon..............   M.W.

    M.... W....

David Tucker yep he is. I was just saying, like, in general I wana go to Nashville, because that's where all the big country musicians make it. I also plan to go down to Alabama and visit his museum. Although, I don't think I'll get much out of it, because since I can't see, and I dout they'll let you touch anything, so it'll just kinda be me not doing much, although, if there's a guide there, and they can describe things, that'll be great. I would love to see the last microphone Hank used.

    M.... W....

@John Dowling, jr. oh ok I got ya. I wish you the best of luck friend.

    M.... W....

@John Dowling, jr. wait if you can't see how did you type all of that so perfect?

    M.... W....

Tanner Owens If you have an iphone, go to settings, general, accessibility, and then scroll down to VoiceOver. VoiceOver is a screen reader that reads aloud text on the screen to assist people who can't see the screen. I recommend you check out Apple explained’s video on the history of apple accessibility. there's also a version of VoiceOver on the mac, apple watch, and iPad. Although, the iPad and iPhone run the same OS, so the features are basically the same. I hope this made sence.

There are a few version on YouTube but you'll know the best version when you hear the drums.

  79. J.... ....

Does anyone know what year this song came out?

    J.... ....

The Log Train was demo session conducted Dec 3, '52 @KWKH (La.), Dec 3, "52. The only song recorded that session, and perhaps his last recording as well. It was in memory of his Dad. It was released in 1981 by Time-Warner, TLCW-01, a box set along with many other of his recordings with just his guitar. No record as to when he may have wrote the song.

    J.... ....

    Thank you

    J.... ....

+LockNLoadTV You inquired about the Log Train. It was a demo session, Dec 3, 1952 .His last recording session was Sept 23, '52. "I could never be ashamed of you", Your Cheatin' Heart,", "Kaw-Liga", "Take these chains from my heart".There are still songs that haven't been released, some are lost; may be found.

    J.... ....

@LockNLoadTV The log train; contract date July 24, 1953. Demo session; Dec 3, 1952. This would be the last recording before his death, altho I doubt he was present for a demo session. I understand this was made in memory of his dad, he was an engineer on a log train.

  80. s.... ....

This was one of my dad's favorite songs I miss u pop!!!
