My younger son was addicted to Hank Jr and Willie Nelson. When He was about five or six, he asked me if he could turn off Sesame Street to listen to these two singers. His daddy would take him to every concert in our area, (I, a Yankee, opted to stay home after attending one of the concerts). He was amazed that his daddy and I had actually been to Big Mamou. LOL!

This song was a hit in New Orleans when I was a kid there between 1950 and 1954.  But I have not been able to find on Youtube that "original" recording.  Hank Jr. pronounces the "a" in "Mamou" differently than in the "original" I'm talking about -- it was "Mah-moo" phonetically in the "original," it was all done in English, and there was no beat to it as in Hank Jr.'s version.  I much prefer the "original," and I'm afraid it's lost.  I believe the singer was male, with a rather high-pitched voice.
