Hank Williams - I Could Never Be Ashamed Of You Lyrics

Everybody says you let me down
That I should be ashamed to take you 'round
Makes no difference what you used to do;
Darling, I could never be ashamed of you.

Maybe you were reckless yesterday
but together, we can find a brighter way.
In my heart, I know that you'll come through
Darling, I could never be ashamed of you

All the happiness I've ever known
came the day you said you'd be my own
and it matters not what we go through
Darlin I could never be ashamed of you

Maybe you've been cheated in the past,
and perhaps those memories will always last
even though you proved to be untrue
darlin I could never be ashamed of you.

Hank Williams was devoted to his music and every song he recorded was about his life and how he coped with his back problems I believe he was a person who loved to sing just to keep of thinking about his problems and his medical problems as well but he never let that stop him from being the great song writer that he was and when l listen to his songs it sometimes reminds me of my life when I was young Hank Williams may be gone but not forgotten his music will live on and though many have tried to sing like him and dress like him but they will never match his music or singing Hank Williams is still number one king of country music

Thanks for posting. This is one of my favorite Hank Williams songs. It's great to hear it in this simple, powerful version.

I loved all his songs! God gave him a great talent. God took him home early.

    Rick Lehman

And the tears we've cried are just interest on the loan.

  13. John Fisher

I've always loved this song for its strength in the face of outside interference from gossips. This is a different version from what I'd heard before with the whole band, but his voice is in fine form here.

    Bob Harris

John Fisher. If you are a Hank Williams fan, you may be interested to know they are starting to delete Hank's songs over copyright infringements. I've had 3 removed recently and in all over 20 from my playlist. I have spent time and trouble researching records to make my comments available but if they continue to delete these songs then I'll terminate my contract and throw the I-Pad in the trash. If they intend to delete these songs, don't post them.

In 1952, while driving from Nashville to Shreveport, he looked over to Billie Jean and said; Babe, I could never be ashamed of you. Thus the song. Billie Jean, by the way, is alive and well and resides in Shreveport, La.

    Bob Harris

Demo recorded about 1952, was never issued, got lost. (Must have found it later). Recorded with his band again in Sept 23, '52. This was his last recording session. Hank wrote the song.
Hank hoped to go back to Audrey. She divorced him July '52. Told Audrey if she didn't come back, he would marry Billy Jean. She replied, go ahead. He married Billy Jean in Oct. Audrey was invited to the wedding but didn't show.

    Because Reasons

    You're wrong.
His last song was Your Cheatin' Heart.

    Bob Harris

The Demon - I said this was his last recording session, not his last song. On that show was, "I could never be ashamed of you", " Your cheatin' heart", " Kaw-liga" and take these chains from my heart". Sept 23, '52. (1:30 to 3:40 PM) Castle studios, Nashville.

Thanks for the memories!!! He sure is a classic!! Love Hank, too bad he had such a sad life,he tried so hard, but just could not get over the past, many can't!! Much too young to die! When you see his "happy" smile you would never believe he was so unhappy!! He wore "faces"well to hide the pain.
