Haggard, Merle - Silver Wings Lyrics

Silver wings shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
They're taking you away, leaving me lonely
Silver wings slowly fading out of sight

"Don't leave me," I cry
Don't take that airplane ride
But you locked me out of your mind
Left me standing here behind

Silver wings shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
They're taking you away, leaving me lonely
Silver wings slowly fading out of sight

Silver wings shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
They're taking you away, leaving me lonely
Silver wings slowly fading out of sight
Slowly fading out of sight

All military vets that served overseas can relate to this song. This got heavy juke box play when I was in Korea in 1974-75. Same with Stateside by Mel Tillis.

  5. T.... M....

Hag fans, as good as this is by Merle, go over to Elvis singing "In The Early Morning the Rain" No, one's not better than the other, they just compliment one another in beautiful touching feelings,... "Bar tend, fill'er up again, and give me a bar towel to wipe my eyes!"

  6. S.... H....

This song has so much meaning for me.... JA had just left our church on Sunday nite to go back home to Marble Falls.. My parents had just eaten my butt out that I was getting to serious about JA... knew I didn't want to go home just now and try and eat supper with them and get some more chewing out... so I went to Jake and Dorothy's Cafe … and I play this song on the Juke box... made me sad and lonely..that was 50 years ago... me and JA will celebrate or 49th this year....

  35. D.... R....

I have listened to "Silver Wings" with Merle so many, many times.  Great singer and song.  Sons are good too.

  36. W.... C....

To this day, my wife starts tearing up whenever she hears this or "Leaving on a Jet Plane". When we were dating and later newly married, it seems like I was leaving on a very regular basis for trips up to Norfolk, Mayport, Charleston or D.C. She said that almost every time she was driving home after dropping me off at the airport one of these two songs played on the radio. My TAD trips are done and now I'm a homebody in East Texas.

  37. B.... M....

The most special, rich, acoustic sounding voice in country music. Never be another voice or poet like Merle.

    B.... M....

    AGREED!

  38. A.... C....

Man I grew up listening to this song and just needed to hear it again got me in some feels

  39. P.... J....

He was and still is hands down the best that has or will ever be,he is the man.

    P.... J....

    One of the many best

  40. S.... H....

I was raised on this music, so was my children. I love all the old country.

  41. D.... P....

My dad used set down with his guitar and play this for me before he passed in 1991. This was our song. Sure miss you dad.

    D.... P....

    Awesome

  42. R.... B....

This song was on the radio, my husband was leaving for Vietnam! I cried so hard! Praise the Lord he made it home, but was never the same 19 year old kid! War makes people do things they never dreamed of doing!

    R.... B....

God Bless I remember my Uncle in 1966 getting on a plane heading to Vietnam, it was the last time we saw him. He was a Chief Master Sergeant USAF had served in WWII and was a POW, then Korea his last tour of duty was Vietnam 6 months then his plane went down.. Our family was never the same.

    R.... B....

God bless him and all those who miss him. We use the term "hero" so loosely these days, but your Uncle was a true hero. He gave himself to save others. Stay strong and honor him.

    R.... B....

katydid mccarthy actually he was a hero. During the 2nd WW his aircraft was hit and his direct action saved the plane and those men under his command. Command Master Sgt. Hardy L. Bell from Paris Texas. There are several articles written about him. Though he became a POW during WWII, he went on to serve in Korea and Vietnam where he was killed in an airplane crash just 6 months before finishing a long distinguished career in the air force. My mother never got over the loss of her brother.

    R.... B....

My mom's brother Vito was in WWII and during a beach landing he was sprayed with 5 machine gun bullets across his back. Amazingly he survived but  3 of those bullets remained in his back. He made it home but every so often a red bump would come up on his back and it was a bullet. Our doctors removed it. Ironically, he was killed by a drunk driver coming home from a baseball game. To survive a war and then be killed by one of our own is unfathomable.

  85. A.... G....

    Love you!!

  86. C.... H....

You don't hear country like this anymore. The new country doesn't hold a candle to all the country legions.

    C.... H....

First off you do hear country like this these days. Second a ton of recent country artists do hold candles to merle. A lot of them (i would say about 93%) are equally as talented and for a cold hard fact 100% are equally as country as merle. Last of all what is a country legion

  87. C.... O....
