Haggard, Merle - No More Trains To Ride Lyrics

I was raised in Santa Fe
Reefer in little California town
Three door down from the railroad track
Where they set the old boxcar down.

Born the son of a railroad man
Who rode 'em until he died
I'd like to live like my daddy did
But there's no more trains to ride.

No, no more trains to ride
No more trains to ride
I'd like to live like my daddy did
But there's no more trains to ride.

I learned to be a guitar picker
Singing and strummin' long
Songs like Hobo Bill's Last Ride
I love the good ramblin' song.

Bill was the son of a rambling man
Who rambled until he died
I'd like to live like Billy did
But there's no more trains to ride,

No, no more trains to ride
No more trains to ride
I'd like to live like my daddy did
But there's no more trains to ride...

Haggard, Merle No More Trains To Ride Comments
  1. TIM Williams

You know Merle had one of the biggest train sets I 've ever seen

  2. Daniel Craig

The thought that inspired me to write this next song may seem premature the title simply being no more trains to ride because if you really want to go to enough trouble you can still hop a freight across the country but there's different penalties and trespassing laws that will discourage most any young man from choosing this method of travel much over hitchhiking given the title No More trains to ride

I am with you! More trains to ride is my vote.

  4. John H

I wasn't one of those young men who was discouraged to ride the freight trains, and started doing so about the time this album was released or shortly after. I did hitchhike in all 50 states, but I rode the rails in just shy of 40. I sang many a Haggard song with the clanging of boxcars, gondolas, cattle cars, grain cars, and an occasional empty caboose for accompaniment. Sadly, this song has more meaning today than it did when he wrote the song and true freedom is becoming a thing of the past.

John H My uncle was a tramp for a lot of his life. he just died yesterday and I'm trying to find music for his service.

I'm sorry that I didn't get your message earlier. I've been in China and youtube was blocked. I'm in Shanghai now and it isn't blocked here, but I'm not sure if it is posting. If it's not too late I'd suggest Woody Guthrie music, King of the Road by Roger Miller, Jimmy Rodgers Is There a Heaven for Hobos, and Haggard's Hobo Bill's Last Ride.
