Hadestown Cast - Way Down Hadestown II Lyrics

[Hermes:]
Now in Hadestown there was a lot of souls

[Company:]
Low, keep your head, keep your head

[Hermes:]
Working on the wall with all their might

[Company:]
Oh, you gotta keep your head

[Hermes:]
You see, they kept their heads down low

[Company:]
If you wanna keep your head

[Hermes:]
You couldn't quite see their faces right
Oh, but you could hear them singing:

[Company:]
Low, keep your head, keep your head

[Hermes:]
Swinging their hammers in the cold, hard ground
You could hear the sound of the pickaxe a-ringing

[Company:]
One! two! if you wanna keep your head

[Hermes & company:]
They called it "freedom"

[Eurydice:]
I'm free! We're free!
Mr. Hades set us free!

[Fates (company):]
Mr. Hades set you free
To work yourself into the ground
Free to spend eternity
In the factory
And the warehouse
Where the whistles scream
And the foreman shouts
And you're punchin' in
And punchin' in
And punchin' in
And you can't punch out!

You're way down Hadestown (oh, keep your head, keep your head low)
Way down Hadestown (oh, you gotta keep your head low)
Way down Hadestown (if you wanna keep your head)
Way down under the ground!

[Eurydice:]
But I don't understand... you said this was the promised land!

[Fates:]
You sell your soul
You get your due!
That is all we promised you!

Heard that mighty trumpet sound
Crossed the river to the other side
Thought you'd lay your burdens down
And rest in peace in paradise
But there ain't no rest for your weary soul
Hades keeps you toiling

[Hades & Fates:]
Shoveling coal in a big black hole to keep his boiler boiling

[Fates (company):]
Way down Hadestown (oh, keep your head, keep your head low)
Way down Hadestown (oh, you gotta keep your head low)
Way down Hadestown (if you wanna keep your head)
Way down under the ground!

[Eurydice:]
But don't you see?
It's different with me!

[Fates:]
Different than who? they thought they were different too!
Down in the river of oblivion
You kissed your little life goodbye
And Hades laid his hands on you
And gave you everlasting life!
And everlasting overtime
In the mine, the mill, and the machinery
Running his old assembly line
From Pluto to the Pleiades
[Fates (company):]
Way down Hadestown (oh, keep your head, keep your head low)
Way down Hadestown (oh, you gotta keep your head low)
Way down Hadestown (if you wanna keep your head)
Way down under the ground!

[Eurydice:]
There must be some mistake!

[Fates:]
Oh, it was a mistake alright!
And now you gotta pay
And pay
And pay for it, for the rest of your life!

[Hermes:]
See, it's like I said before: a lot can happen behind closed doors
Eurydice was a hungry young girl, but she wasn't hungry anymore
What she was, instead, was dead
Dead to the world, anyway
See, she went behind those doors
And signed her life away

[Fates:]
Saw that wheel up in the sky
Heard the big bell tolling
A lot of souls have gotta die
To keep the rust belt rolling
A lot of spirits gotta break
To make the underworld go 'round
[Fates & company:]
Way down Hadestown
Way down under the ground!

Hadestown Cast Way Down Hadestown II Comments
  1. S.... M....

these bitches are the real villain

  2. C.... B....

I like to imagine the fates are pushing her around and playing with her like a cat plays with a mouse, they’ve been following her for her whole life and now they finally have their hands on her

  3. c.... c....

As much as I love this version, I do miss "But there ain't no rest for your weary soul, Hades keeps ya toiling, shoveling coal in a big black hole to keep his boiler boiling."

  4. a.... ....

It's almost ironic isn't it? Eurydice is supposed to be the one who can 'see the world the way it is' and yet she's still the one who got tricked....I'm not blaming her for wanting security and stability in her life, but at the same time you're wondering why she didn't think this through? Why she didn't listen to Mr Hermes?

  5. P.... R....

3:14 did y’all hear “heard the big bell toenail” or is that just me 😆

  6. N.... A....

Very nice. Though this version is much straight forward.
While the original cast lyrics wasn't about forgetting it was about Eurydice denying she was here.
Still this ver shows another side.
    Pretty cool

  7. B.... ....

    I freaking love the changes!

  8. S.... H....

Ohh they got rid of the "I am different!" "Different from who? They thought they were different too!"

I like most of the changes, but I really miss that line

  9. C.... G....

"So what was your name again?
    You've already forgot it."

    WHOA. DUDE. WTF.

    C.... G....

In the original story, Eurydice (and all the other souls who enter Hades) drink from the waters of Lethe, the river of forgetfulness, where you lose your memories of your former life amongst the living and your living identity.

    C.... G....

You signed the contract dearie. Don't blame us if you didn't read the fine print first.

  10. F.... ....

    This is terrifying

    I love it

  11. G.... B....

2:27 Those strings oh my god they give me chills

    G.... B....

    And 0:57

  12. R.... T....

as if the song wasn't scary enough, that new ending game me chills

  13. C.... A....

I actually really like this version. Wicked creepy, although the energy of the other one is cool too. Both really good in different ways.

  14. C.... ....

I loved the original line "Workin' that old assembly line/From Pluto to the Pleiades", but "Your place on the assembly line/Replaces all your memories" is fucking TERRIFYING. I love watching these songs evolve.

  15. C.... ....

This song was honestly one of my faves to watch performed. Eurydice went down the stairs happily exclaiming, “I’m Eurydice!” with a smile on her face, ready to meet new people, but slowly frowned when she realized no one’d listen to her. My heart broKE. Then the Fates saying, “So what was your name again?” to Eurydice, who just stood there silently, unable to respond. “You’ve already forgotten.” I got CHILLS.

    C.... ....

CasuKaga Also, when she just kind of collapses at the end right before ‘flowers’, I got chills (especially since Flowers is my favorite)

  16. K.... D....

This song is so sad. Poor Eurydice

  17. U.... ....

This was already one of my favorite songs from this show and this version is honestly even better

  18. D.... ....

the dissonance at the end and the overall terrifying vibe that this song has...anaïs mitchell has done it *again*

  19. L.... 5....

Daaaang this song got a LOT creepier!

  20. p.... ....

Finally some good fucking food SSDFGGHJJKLK
