Hadestown Cast - I Raise My Cup Lyrics

[Persephone:]
Pour the wine and raise a cup
Drink up, brothers, you know how
And spill a drop for Orpheus
Wherever he is now

Some birds sing when the sun shines bright
My praise is not for them
But the one who sings in the dead of night
I raise my cup to him

Wherever he is wandering
Alone upon the earth
Let all our singing follow him
And bring him comfort
Some flowers bloom when the green grass grows
My praise is not for them
But the one who blooms in the bitter snow
I raise my cup to him

[Company:]
I raise my cup and drink it up
I raise it high and drink it dry

[Persephone:]
To Orpheus and all of us
Goodnight, brothers, goodnight

Hadestown Cast I Raise My Cup Comments
  1. J.... P....

Omygosh Eurydice is part of it 😭😭😭

  2. P.... J....

I just realized this is sort of a parallel to when Orpheus was praising Persephone as the patroness at the beginning

    P.... J....

    …Oh shit

    P.... J....

Yep, exactly. "She will always fill our cups. And we will always raise them up," Orpheus says in Livin It Up, raising his cup to Persephone. And now she raises her cup for him.

    P.... J....

Astro Wiz It’s a very beautifully tragic parallel, I love it a lot

Also thanks for changing the font... it doesn’t fit the theme as much, but it definitely doesn’t hurt my head as much.

Maybe the Hadestown OBCR managed to jump this far over the impossibly high bar I set for it because Spiderman is in it

    ... I'll see myself out

This was so beautiful, the harmonies and the melody and amber's acting throughout the song, everything is beautiful and sad and still... perfect.

Thank you god for Amber Gray and Eva Noblezada

    A.... A....

    Which god? Hades or Persephone?

    A.... A....

    @Gavin O'Connor probably Zeus

  10. D.... B....

yes!! so glad they're using this song in the broadway version!!!

    D.... B....

Danny B It is not really a part of the musical broadway version. They perform this after/during the curtain call (after the bowing).

  11. R.... S....

In some versions of the myth, Orpheus forever wanders the earth singing his songs of lost love and heart ache. He tries many times to take his own life, but the gods intervene. His songs are so beautiful, they can’t bear the thought of letting him die and deprive them of his voice. In other versions, while traveling in a forest, nymphs hear his song and realize that the love he sings for, he’ll forever be faithful to. Overcome with jealousy, they tear him apart and dear Orpheus finally descends to the Underworld. He’s met immediately by a patient Eurydice and Hades allows them to spend forever walking along the River Styx, singing his songs now filled with joy and hope. If he ever walks too fast ahead, he turns around and smiles at Eurydice as many times as he pleases. I like to think in this musical, though we leave our tragic couple on an uncertain note, they find a way to each other once more.

toriclaire They only believed in comedy and tragedy and this is what happens when you leave angsty men to contemplate sadness

    t.... ....

toriclaire I mean considering there’s SO many stories with happy endings, it’s nice to have the option of something different.

    t.... ....

Ok, i’m Going to be that person, but in the context of this musical it means that Orpheus is so depressed that he manages to get a ticket to Hadestown, condemning him to a life without his music and freedom. Sooooooo

    t.... ....

And Peggy Uhhh I really doubt that lol, “where ever he is wandering alone upon the Earth.” The Earth. Not Hadestown. Plus Persephone doesn’t know where he is, which she would if he was in Hadestown.

    t.... ....

    toriclaire, I needed that.

  14. M.... N....

When did all these songs came out?

    M.... N....

MClari Navarro They’re coming out in batches (Hades + Persephone’s just came out 2 days ago and Orpheus and Eurydice are in a month) due to sound mixing and editing. I don’t know when this one specifically did but probably the first batch or so because it already has this lyric video which took some time to make

    M.... N....

Ben This song was released with the Hades/Persephone lead songs :)

  15. C.... C....

Ooh! Those opening chords gave me a mid 90s post-grunge vibe
