Gregg Allman - Melissa Lyrics

Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none
Bearing sorrow, having fun
But, back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa

Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same
No one knows the gypsy's name
And no one hears his lonely sighs
There are no blankets where he lies
In deepest dreams the gypsy flies
With sweet Melissa

Again, the mornings come
Again, he's on the run
A sunbeam's shinin' through his hair
Fear not to have a care
Pick up your gear, gypsy roll on
Roll on

Crossroads, will you ever let him go?
Lord, Lord, Lord
Or will you hide the dead man's ghost?
Or will he lie, beneath the clay?
Or will his spirit float away?
But, I know he won't stay
Without Melissa
Yes, I know he won't stay, yeah
Without Melissa

Gregg Allman: “The first thing comes to my mind is I said to myself, ‘Gregory, do not cry. Do not start crying.’ If you watch the part with me and Jackson [Browne], we did ‘These Days’ and ‘Melissa’ and if you look at him during the second verse of ‘Melissa’ he was singing and he had a huge crocodile tear out of the outside of his eye and I was thinking, ‘Don’t start, you’ll get me goin’!’ I just happened to look down at the first three or four rows, they were all crying. Everyone in that place.”

This song makes me cry for my beautiful young cousin Melissa, who died so young at 44 and left 2 little girls and her loving husband way too soon. Beautiful song though, song of a generation.

  30. R.... M....

    This is a lovely song.

    R.... M....

Robert Matteson ...you are definitely right...

  31. C.... G....

Flashbacks of days gone by. Music that made us all feel lovely, cared for, and love returned. Yes lovely Gregg Allman, do rest in peace, alongside your venerable brother. Jackson Browne should be daily revered, that is an uncommonly nice person.

    C.... G....

Caroline Good ...Jackson Browne is my favorite... he and Gregg do magic together...

  32. R.... G....

Jackson couldn't finish the song and greg lived in the same apartment complex and he ask greg to help him with it

  33. J.... S....

All on stage were in a place for pure appreciation of the moment.

I cried and cried too, like so many listening to this version! With Allman's first strum on his guitar and we all know immediately that it's Sweet Melissa. So beautiful. And, so much respect and love between Gregg and Jackson. What a gift they gave us!

  39. D.... O....

So good...but I still love Dickie Betts and Warren Haynes the best ... ♥️♥️♥️

  40. S.... D....

This is soul stirring music straight from the heart.. This version with the harmonica is icing on the cake.. <3 <3 <3 May Gregg rip with his brother and all the other souls in rock n' roll heaven.

  41. M.... C....

When Jackson looked at Gregg I got misty 3:33

  42. m.... s....

What I noticed today was how Gregg just beamed when Jackson started singing.

    m.... s....

+ Mark S. Yeah. Don’t you just know . They were struggling roommates in their late teens (18 - 19). No refrigeration . Caned goods. Foods that would not spoil.

    m.... s....

    Yes, their mutual admiration showed.

    m.... s....

@Meredith Rutkowski That was a .much better way of saying it...mutual admiration. Tha ks

    m.... s....

@mark savory I was just stating what I see when viewing this, as did you. These men shared a deep love and respect for each other born of years of making awe inspiring music. Fortunately, we grew up in an era that gave us so many talented musicians, true originals.

  43. F.... S....

We just gotta keep it goin guys.for our children.my 8yrld old loves it

  44. B.... T....

    Sweet Melissa....

  45. S.... W....

Perhaps, but note Jack Pearson is in the back ground playing lead

  46. J.... W....

Musical accomplishments aside, Browne's a wife-beater and has earned his place alongside Glen Campbell and Jimmy Page on my list of boycotted performers.

    J.... W....

+ Joel Wetzel. You need to do to some homework. Jackson Browne called the police at the time and then later requested from the police an investigation. He did say later that something happened but that he would not talk about her. He was a very private person about himself and all others concerned.

  47. N.... H....

To me Gregg Allman had the best blues of anybody who wasn’t Black!
Damn that man could sing the Blues.
My all time favorite band ABB. Most have passed over to the other side but their music will live forever
    Thanks for the memories fellas✌️👍❤️😍

  50. g.... a....

Never going to happen again. A beautiful song written by a teenager that was an old soul played by that old soul and his friend as he approaches death. To beautiful for words. Today kids have Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. They will never miss what they never had.

  51. h.... ....

Where all musicians respect each other no egos... Beautiful Song...

It is bittersweet to watch this. Two of my favorites, singing one of my favorite songs of all time. This is as good as the acoustic version with Dickie Betts and Warren Haynes which simply amazes me. I get emotional watching this. A seminal song from a legendary band, all mostly gone now. Thank you for the memories Gregg.

    r.... S....

So sorry to hear of your brother's passing. Jack Pearson (Nashville Guitarist) first saw hime w/ABB in the 90's.... Blew me AWAY he did.

  75. E.... T....

I started listening to Greg Allman back in 5th grade when I spent the night at a buddies and his high school (HOT) older sister had his poster on her bedroom wall and I asked who is that (pointing to Greg) she jumps up and says listen to this putting the Allman Brothers record on....WOW I was hooked and have been and always will thank robbie wintles sister for that........peace

  76. V.... R....

May His Soul Rest In Peace, Blessings <3

  77. T.... ....

This just brought me to tears. Always a sad, melancholy song, but following Gregg's passing, and his long friendship with Jackson Brown...
    Damn.

  78. S.... H....

Gregg Allman was the greatest rock singer ever and Jackson was no slouch either.

  79. C.... C....

I named my daughter Jessica because of the AB Band’s beautiful song. This band gave me so much in my heart when I was a teen.

  80. S.... S....

My heart nearly breaks watching this and when I see gregg smile makes me realise that we have lost him but we will never forget him

  81. A.... P....

    Gregg is so missed.💔

  82. D.... M....

According to Gregg, he had this song written except for the woman's name. Drove him nuts because he couldn't think of a 3 syllable woman's name which worked. He was in a convenience store one day and heard a lady call out for her daughter "Melissa . . . Melissa". Voila!

  83. D.... M....

The best live version of this great tune I've ever heard. R.I.P. Gregg.

  84. S.... T....

One of my favorite songs !!

  85. S.... T....

Rest in peace Gregg Allman !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  86. D.... G....

  90. P.... B....

I can't remember if I've commented on this one before, but I love the hell out of this song, this version -- everything. What a treasure to see two immense talents together and playing off of each other. It's a joy to watch them watch each other perform. Something about "Melissa" -- I can't ever say why, but it's one of the songs that stirs something in me that's like an emotional punch in the gut (in a good way). Devastatingly beautiful on every level. Missing you Gregg -- and Jackson, keep on keepin' on!

  91. M.... G....

I can't play this again for a long time, unless I want to cry.
My sister-in-laws daughter was named Melissa. We had some great times with her. Such a beautiful girl. She had some family issues and ran away at around 16. She's still out there somewhere, a grown woman now. We miss you, Melissa.

  92. M.... M....

Great song. Jackson touched a lot of people .... this is a special duo....Jack Pearson lays down his usual INCREDIBLE lead guitar .... back there in the dark.... always perfect. Greg looked great. This is as good as it gets.

  93. L.... J....

Soulful, pure and powerful. It always gives me the chills. When Gregg smiles- it hits you in the heart. Fly free Gregg. You are forever missed.
