Greenwood, Lee - Wind Beneath My Wings Lyrics

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You've been content to let me shine,
You always walked a step behind

I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strength.
Only a face without you, I miss everything about a name,
I never once heard you complain.

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
Well, I can fly higher than an eagle,
but you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know the truth,
I would be nothing without you,
I miss everything about you.

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
Well, I can fly higher than an eagle,
but you are the wind beneath my wings.

You are the wind beneath my wings.

  7. Mike Cook

The best version ever i used to sing this version long before Bette Midler Can't beat the original masterpiece....mid eighties

  8. Michael Sturm

For me, although Lee is great, Gary Morris version is the best and it's the original.

  9. Manni Faber

    Oh, oh, oh, oh
It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You were content to let me shine, that's your way
You always walked a step behind
So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain
Did you ever know that you're my hero
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings
It might have appeared to go unnoticed
But I've got it all here in my heart
I want you to know, I know the truth, of course I know it
I would be nothing without you
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
    You're everything I wish I could be
I could fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings
Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings
'Cause you are the wind beneath my wings
Oh, the wind beneath my wings
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings
Fly, fly, fly away, you let me fly so high
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings
Fly, fly, so high against the sky
So high I almost touch the sky
    Thank you, thank you
Thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings

  11. Peter j Slevin

This is best version. it was only bet middlers fame that took her version higher in the charts not because it was better cover.

  12. Andrew Yang

  15. PsychicMax UK

Too many other versions sound dated now with their synthesisers and sounds. Good guitar a drum and simple piano is timeless. Love this version

  20. Linda Russel

I'm transported right back to 1983 listening to this song. It helped me get through a very difficult time in my life. Lee undoubtedly sings the best ever version of the song. Thanks for sharing

  21. Carmencita Garcia

  22. Orardo Camacho

  23. Dave McGerty

Lee's version stands head and shoulders above all the other versions.

  24. beth horowitz

I made a music video for my father to this song when it first came out. Lee's version captures the soul, heart and passion of these most beautiful lyrics, while Bette's is more "Hollywood-ized". Thank you Lee for giving this gift and ultimately giving it to my dad.

    Teena Colebrook

I did the exact same thing for my Dad using this version 30 years agao when we found out he was dying of cancer, it bought tears to his eyes and still brings tears to my eyes hearing Lee Greenwood sing it. We are now going to play it at my brothers funeral as he loved this version, they played my video of this song at my Dads funeral

    beth horowitz

    Teena Colebrook
OH, so sorry and such a sad coincidence that you wonderful father was diagnosed with lung cancer 2 months ago and also passed, last wk and I was looking for the video I made...on VHS to play at his funeral. I couldnt find it, but that's one of the reasons I started listening to this song again on you tube.

    Teena Colebrook

Thank you, I hope you were able the find the video you made, putting pictures to music is so amazing. watching my video makes me cry even 30 years later, it will be amazing to have it played at my bothers funeral. I will want this played at mine too.

  25. steve johnson

Remember when this was played constantly on BBC Radio 2 when the policy of the station was to play melodic easy listening music. Times change but quality music doesn't :)

  26. Keith Sampsel

I like Lee Greenwood version more then anybody else

    Rose Zadik

    Rose Zadik thank you❤

  28. Tony Hemingway

All the great artists who have recorded this song and Bette Miller gets the most recognition. In my opinion, her rendition doesn't have the feeling of the song. It only highlights her voice.

  29. Geoff Unwin

    The best version ever made.

  30. Troll

    Sorry, but NO

  31. Peter Hamill

Haven't heard Lee Greenwood's version of this song for just over 30 years now brings back memories of an old girlfriend who dedicated it to me way back then. It's still the best version for my money.

    Max Lim

Robert McCormack Bette Midler is a phenomenal singer. What are you on?

    Robert McCormack

@Max Lim  None of these words can ever be used when Bette sings. You must be a relative !!

    Max Lim

Robert McCormack All of those words can be used to describe Bette. What are you smoking?

  57. Rosemary Ochoa

this always reminds me of sister, the middle child, God Bless her, without her, I don't know where I'd be, I call her every once in while and blast this song, I'm the lucky one, thanks, Lee

  58. Ernie Winfrey

WOW! It's been a long time since I've heard Lee's version of this song. I'm very proud to say I was the recording engineer on this version AND the Gladys Knight version. I did the original demo on this song with a singer named Jim Hurt. I loved the song so much that I actually pitched it to several producers in Nashville including Jerry Crutchfield who recorded on Lee. I always loved the arrangement on this version. And Lee flat sung his assoff.
Also check out Gladys Knight version and see what you think. She heard the demo and fell in love with the song. We already had a full track cut with strings and everything so she came into the studio the next day and sang it IN ONE PASS! She had the co-writer of the song, Larry Henley in tears when he heard it.
I retired several years ago but I recorded a lot of interesting people when i was engineering. You might like to check out my channel and see some of the other stuff I worked on.
Thanks for putting this up Rose. I did so many projects that I sometimes have to be reminded of some of the really great performances i recorded. Lee Greenwood's was one of the best.

    Martin Garner

+Ernie Winfrey , thank you for the back story. I have loved this song since i first heard it in the 80s. I think it is far superior to the Bette Midler version. I also love the fact that some guy from the creation of this, is able to share the information you have shared above. thank you

    Ernie Winfrey

Thanks Martin. I was so blessed to be able to work in this profession and to worked with the many talented artists that I did.

    Linda Russel

  61. Amy Josephs

My mom has terminal breast cancer. She doesn't have long to live. My momma has always been my best friend and sometimes the only person in my life. I will forever miss her. She is the most beautiful person. I refuse to pick roses or allow my husband to send me roses because to me the beauty of my mom is greater than any rose and to pick a rose and let it die feels like a great shame to me. She had a hard time conceiving, staying pregnant and laboring me. We have dealt with minor and major hurdles. She will forever be, "The wind beneath my wings". <3

+Amy Josephs i'm so sorry god bless sweetheart

    Debby Bostock

My heart aches for you honey - my Mum was my hero strong and be proud of who you are and where you came from - she will never truly leave you xxxx

    Darin Moates

My mom's 81 she's not going to be here much longer she has dementia all timers she had a hard time conceiving me to the doctors said they were going to have to take me but I made it sometimes my moms the only true friend I have we've had our ups and downs I love my mom with all my heart and when she's gone it's going to be tough for me my real dad beat my mom real bad and she was pregnant with me she divorced him. And she married a cowboy he's going now but he was a great man. I still love my Father which I never knew him he died when I was too but the Lord tells us to forgive and honor your mother and father which I do I just pray that I'll be with my mom one day again. She's My Wings she's my hero. 🙏🌹 I don't think I'll ever pick another Rose either when she's gone she's the most beautiful person I ever knew.

  62. Edson Nogueira

  65. Frank Howell

I echo the sentiments of all the others.  The first, and best, version I ever heard of this beautiful song.  It seems to have disappeared.  It's not on ITunes either.  Any idea where I can download an MP3 of it?

    Rose Zadik

I first heard it when I bought an "Ultimate Country Collection" on two tapes in Ireland about 20 years ago, and when I later heard other versions, none could compare...
I actually just found it on iTunes UK:
    and on iTunes US:
    I hope that helps :-)

    Frank Howell

@Rose Zadik That worked perfectly!  I couldn't find it before.  Thanks you so much Rose.  You've made my day.
