I always thought as a 15 year old when this song came out that the words to this tune were way too powerful for a kid to appreciate.

Morbidly depressed lyrics juxtaposed with an upbeat, energetic track, somehow makes the lyrics seem even darker. Fucking brilliant song.

This song makes me want to do running or skating or anything. It touched the lazy part of me and had to do something about it but then, all that Adrenalin lasted 3 minutes and I go back being lazy.

I was 12 when this came out but I relate to it even more as an adult; I hate everyone & everything.

Listen guys...every song on this album isn't "underrated". The album is awesome, and the last great Green Day album before their sound truly changed. Go to the other youtube nimrod tracks, every comment is "man this is so underrated." NO, Nimrod is great and nothing is underrated about it.

green day knows how to embed depressive and paranoid lyrics in uplifting songs, self-cynical and without that 'attention seeking' vibe many modern 'emo core' bands have. that makes them my alltime Favorite.

Nimrod was recorded in standard E tuning.

The song is in the key of F#. The chord it ends on is D#m which happens to be a chord in the key of F#, therefore, it is not wrong. It just sounds wrong as the last chord because it doesn't resolve to the tonic. Songs don't have to resolve to the tonic though.

that makes a lot of sense but I'll never forget my first reaction at first listen. I bought the CD the day it came out and I listened as soon as I got home and I remember my brain felt like it got fucked when it went to that chord. I think I was annoyed actually, it's just less satisfying. When you hear a great catchy song you naturally want it to end right.
