Gray, David - Silver Lining Lyrics
Take this silver lining
Keep it in your own sweet head
Shine it when the night is burning red
Shine it in the twilight
Shine it 'til these walls come tumbling down
We were born with our eyes wide open
So alive with wild hope
Now can you tell me why
Time after time
They drag you down
Down in the darkness deep
Fools in their madness all around
Know that the light don't sleep
Step into the silence
Take it in your own two hands
And scatter it like diamonds
All across these lands
Blaze it in the morning
Wear it like an iron skin
Only things worth living for
Innocence and magic, amen
We were born with our eyes wide open
So alive with wild hope
Now can you tell me why
Time after time
They drag you down
Down in the darkness deep
Fools in their madness all around
Know that the light don't sleep
We were born with our eyes wide open
So alive with wild hope
Now can you tell me why
Time after time
They drag you down
Down in the darkness so deep
Fools in their madness all around
Know that the light don't sleep
Know that the light don't sleep
Time after time
They drag you down
Down in the darkness deep
Fools in their madness all around
Know that the light don't sleep
Know that the light don't sleep

Takes me back to early 2000s. Love it
It must be the first time since Morrison's Astral Weeks that an artist has managed to condense so much exhuberance and despair. Utterly uplifting!
Who's listening to this in 2017😝meee
2018 now. If I was a day or two early I would be with you.
What about 2018? Anyone?

Now it's 2020 but WW3 is beginning. Stay safe out there.
Gorgeous, Gorgeous song!
Some years ago i was listening to this tune on a beach in koh phangan i Thailand. It was in the afternoon and the bar at the beach was empty of people. Only me in a sunchair with the music, hot breeze and waves coming in slowly. I had a drink in my hand an i thought that im in paradise now. If i die here , i die in a good place and i die happy. Sweet memories.
I live in samui am on my house porch looking at the mountains now same feeling listening.
This song punches a hole in my universe and slow dances with my soul.
posted 04-30-2012, "There's at least some ready to light fire and revolutionary 'social commentary' passion in this song. Yes, the instrumentation is chilling, relaxing and sonic. But the lyrics have venom. I feel David Gray is feeling isolated and lonely at the world; its eerie dark SNOBBISH UNCARING $ELFISH silences of Western Suburbia, night after night & aeon upon aeon. We yearn with him to recapture the innocence & untainted hope of childhood & ''wild'' birth, now marred in adulthood (even tainted teenage years) by the rat race STUCK UP a$$ pursuits of modern capitalism. Definitely hints of John Lennon, so go DG! '...never noticing the war until it's right there at your door...' , '...hold on to nothing so write it down...'"
Damn well said. You said it perfectly.
Take this silver lining
Keep it in your own sweet head
Shine it when the night is burning red
Shine it in the twilight
Shine it on the cold cold ground
Shine it till these walls come

We were born with our eyes wide open
So alive with wild hope
Now can you tell me why
Time after time
They drag you down
Down with talk so cheap
Fools in their madness all around

-Know that the light don't sleep
Time after time
They drag you down
Down in the darkness deep
Fools in their madness all around

David gray be mine
Saw this man live once. Very solumn fellow, but the drummer made up for it... Those that were there will know what I'm talking about!
It is the best song ever and nobody can replace it

Reminds me of lazy summers round my friends houses when I was little. I miss it all.
Some Of David's songs give me that feeling as though I should run away and start a new life somewhere else.
You should
Best comment I’ve read today. I completely agree. This song was played at my high school graduation slideshow in 2003 and every time I listen to it, it reminds me of how bittersweet it was for me, I thought about how we had had our fun etc., but we were finding a new place, such as you said. Amazing comment. :)
know what you mean
totototototototototo x. Ohhhhhh I can relate to that 👍
totototototototototo Agreed. His music is really powerful to me.
Love this song, it's my inspiration.
sweetly melodic and poetic. Love David Gray.
Disagree with u Stephanie,love Silver Lining,it's perfect!!
This song needs an acoustic remake. The silly synthesizer takes away from this beautiful song.
LolHaha
simple edit will do the trick ;-)
To me it adds the imagery of a snowy cold winter night walking around town with my head down as all the Christmas lights are shining
