Grant, John - You Don't Have To Lyrics
Remember walking hand in hand side by side?
We walked the dogs and took long strolls to the park--
Except we never had dogs
And never went to the park.
Neither do I because I always passed out.
I needed lots of the booze
To handle the pain.
You don't have to pretend to care.
You don't have to say things that you don't mean.
You don't have to pretend to care.
You don't have to say things that you don't mean.
It just embarrasses me
And makes you look like a fool.
Remember when the tenderness stopped,
And the kindness turned to pity and disgust,
And the smiles were stopped
Before they could start,
And understanding was now just a tool
(We used it every chance we got to be cruel),
And we cringed because
We couldn't make ourselves stop?
You don't have to pretend to care.
You don't have to say things that you don't mean.
You don't have to pretend to care.
You don't have to say things that you don't mean.
It just embarrasses me
And makes you look like a fool.
There are days when I think about you,
And on those days I really feel like a fool
Because you don't deserve
To have somebody think about you.
I feel so stupid 'cause I let myself down.
I acted like a motherfucking clown
At a circus
On the outskirts of town.
You don't have to pretend to care.
You don't have to say things that you don't mean.
You don't have to pretend to care.
You don't have to say things that you don't mean.
It just embarrasses me
Because you think you're so fucking cool.

y are people talking about gays and shit is John gay or what am i missing?
+futurenika John Grant is gay (and HIV+ according to his wikipedia article).
If it weren't for profanity, John Grant would have nothing to say. Because to call him elevator music, would be an insult to elevator music.
+FritzIdler Clearly you're deaf to all the other lyrics that took up most of the 5+ mins of the song. And if his music is not your cup of tea, then so be it. But don't be so arrogant to think that you're the custodian of musical knowledge.
I'll ignore the stupidity of your 'elevator music' jibe. As to having nothing to say, how many artists can you name that deal with the extremes of theocratic overreach, the obvious concept of gay equality, that you can delude yourself into fucking your kids up in the name of God, the tremendous pain of loss and the boundless joy of love, the importance of recognising who you are and coming to terms with it, the horror of being diagnosed with a very serious illness, that sometimes you have to end a relationship even though you don't want to, the importance of telling toxic people to, yes, fuck off? And doing all this with humour and candour that is hard to find anywhere else? If that's not saying anything tell me what saying something is because I really don't know.
Obvious troll is obvious
Too bad he included the booze to handle the pain bit. It makes it harder for heterosexuals to relate to the entire song.
+Nicknamevanniks A year onwards my own reply made me laugh a bit. I didn't know I was so homophobic.
+Nicknamevanniks haha i don't think it was a homophobic :P makes sense that you can't relate- i guess his music has loads of gay parts, maybe why i relate to it- that and his self loathing loll
u don't have to pretend to care!
The perfect break up song.
I don't think he's the next big thing but this song was definitely written for my ears.
