Gordon Lightfoot - Summertime Dream Lyrics
Where the road runs down by the butternut grove
To old Bill Skinner's stream
Do tell at the noonday bell
It's time for a summertime dream
In a lunch pail town in a one horse way
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream
Birds in all creation will be twitterin' in the trees
And down below's a pond I know
You can swim in it if you please
And if you come 'round when the mill shuts down
You can see what chivalry means
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream
On a trip on down to wonderland
In love among the flowers
Where time gets lost with no straw boss
Tallyin' up the hours
Where the road runs down by the butternut grove
To old Bill Skinner's stream
Do tell at the noonday bell
It's time for a summertime dream
Birds in all creation will be twitterin' in the trees
And down below's a pond I know
You can swim in it if you please
So if you come 'round when the mill shuts down
You can see what chivalry means
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream

Gordon Lightfoot Summertime Dream Comments
No big deal, but how can 22 people give this a thumbs down?
Love this song!
I love this song. It's so Lightfoot. "Old Bill Skinner's stream," for example. My only minor criticism is that I would have preferred a more imaginative guitar lick from Terry C. at the end of each verse instead of just an echo of the melody. But hey ... one guy's opinion. Still a wonderful, feel-good tune.
Nice summer ditty.
To my ear, attuned to it by 25 years across the St. Lawrence from Upper Canada, this really has the lilt and phrasing of C'naadyian English.... nostalgia!
As a kid who grew up in Detroit listening to CBC TV and Radio I agree!
I so miss the days when I first heard this song.
This song is getting me through a lot right now.. So good :)
Great music can do that. Hope things turn around for you soon. You're in my thoughts.
I heard Gordon sing this at Emmons auditorium in Muncie Indiana in the 70’s. I haven never forgotten it! Thanks Gord.
I am amazed commercials don"t use this song for vacation sites. Awesome song
IMHO this was his best album, and they were all great.
According to my mother, this is the song that played while I was born
Mom would know 😉
I am surprised that no tourism agency ever used that song.
Yeesh. Don't give anyone ideas, Ronald. This masterpiece doesn't deserve to be cheapened that way!!
Great song to play when you've had the day from hell.
How about summertime?
