Gordon Lightfoot - Does Your Mother Know Lyrics

Does your mother know
You had to go someday
Does your mother know
That you would go so fast
Anyway, that's all you think about
You'd call her if you could
But the letters that you write
In the faded winter light
Just tell her they tell her
That you've got ten dollars and you'll be all right
And when you get straight you're gonna come back east some day

Does your mother know
You have a man in the West
Does your mother know
You drove him from your door
Anyway that's all you think about
You'd call her if you could

Does your mother know
You walked all day in the rain
Does your mother know
How deep your love could be
Anyway that's all you think about
You'd call her if you could

But the letters that you write
In the faded winter light
Just tell her they tell her
That you've got ten dollars and your rent costs eight
And when you get straight you're gonna come back east some day

But the letters that you write in the faded winter light
Just tell her they tell her

Heard first in the mid-1970's, was living with woman I loved, but who had second thoughts about me, wrote home about wanting me to change. Eventually she left and went back East to mother's land. These were the days of handwritten letters home, and feelings of confusion and wanting to remain innocent and loved. It was a hard time when she left. I should have been alert to the changes 2 years before the split, as the signs were already there. This song was prominent on my mind at the time, yet I remained naive and unbelieving. We should have talked more. We should have laid our feelings and thoughts out front, but we didn't. Only whispers of true feelings at odd times and premonitions of what was to come. Gordon Lightfoot had it down in song as it happened. Incredible. And very sad. I like the song, I almost cry when I hear it.

This is a beautiful song, in its tune and its lyrics, but it is so damn hard to sing, at least for me, and apparently others. When I've heard them try to sing along, flatness ensues, for me too..

Anyway, that’s all you think about...

  9. a.... ....

One of my very favorite Lightfoot songs...and her mother never knew and neither did she.

    a.... ....

She wanted me to be something that I wasn't, but I became something she could have loved, if only there had been enough time. And I don't know what became of her.

+Janice Scott Totally with you. The mountains I see always frame my Marianne in their foothills. Pussy willows are never far from cat tails. For every song I have sung, I sang three of his.

Janice Scott I wonder why his marriages never worked out ?He lived on Beaumont St in Rosedale T.O

Nice to see the time Gord spent studying instrumentation in college did not go to waste. Great song.

    Fantastic. Thanks for posting!

Beautiful orchestration to match an irreplaceable slice in time - the 1960's - where there was enough soul space to be lonely and introspective.

Now, in the 21st century, the frenetic pace of a world gone mad will tell a sensitive to soul to 'text' itself into an uncaring void of complacency and depravity...

@buck downer Very well said. I feel that people just are not the same anymore. Sad, but true.

This is my favourite Lightfoot song - thanks very much for posting!
