Gil Scott-Heron - Sign Of The Ages Lyrics

It's a sign of the ages
Markings on my mind
Men at the crossroads
At odds with an angry scab

There can be no salvation
There can be no rest
Until all old customs
Are put to the test

The gods are all angry
You hear from the breeze
As night slams like a hammer
Yeah, and you drop to your knees

The questions can't be answered
You're always haunted by the past
The world's full of children
Who grew up too fast

Yeah, but where can you run
Since there ain't no world of your own
And you know that no one will ever miss you, yeah yeah yeah
When you're finally gone

So you cry like a baby, a baby
Or you go out and get high
But there ain't no peace on Earth, man
Maybe peace when you die, yeah

This entire lp of sad blues songs will actually lift your spirits and make you feel like a million dollars, thanks Gil for baring out your soul before the world, I see the positive therapy you were administering. You healed many of us, through your heart felt honesty, I broke down and cried when I heard of his passing. That shit really hurt me to my soul. Thanks for the education, Your brother Omar.

  28. L.... i....

BJ The Chicago Kid's "His Pain" featuring Kendrick Lamar, sampled this song. I'm a fan of BJ's voice and poetry but the original is a lot better, in my opinion

  47. j.... d....

GSH's voice & music is pheonomal This is true music appreciation. Mr. Heron never sold out which explains why he never recieved the acclaim or prestiege of a Stevie Wonder even though he was far more gifted. A true music & lyrical prodigy. He didn't dilute the truth. He chose not to sell his soul. We love you Brother Gil.

    j.... d....

More gifted than Stevie ?!?.C’mon, I love Gil, ( have since the 70’s),this is why I’m here. But Stevie Wonder has been making hits since the 60’s (Fingertips; I was made to love her; etc.). He’s written/ produced hits for others like Michael (“I can’t help it””Until you come back to me” Aretha, “Try Jah Love”. He’s started or furthered the careers of other world-class musicians like Syreeta, Denise Williams, Chaka (Tell me Something Good), and he’s still creating & giving us musical love. On top of that he’s a fun, honest-appearing person who doesn’t take his genius too seriously. Every successful person is not a sellout. Hard work & genuine talent can go far...and let’s stop comparing.Luckilly we live at a time when we can have/ appreciate both Stevie Wonder AND Gil Scott-Heron!!!

  48. t.... ....

    a beautiful sad song..........r.i.p ...

@EDWARDLASUVIDA aww mann that was a great story, dam i can image, maybe in a mdcentury modern home after dark .im there!

  55. D.... ....

Gil Scott-Heron's haunting Cool Jazz ballad from the album 'Pieces Of A Man'. Gil's deep love for the Cool 50's sound of his idols John Coltrane & Miles Davis are so clear this song in instrumental form could be a session from Mile's 'Kind Of Blue' period.

  56. D.... ....

Without sounding self indulgent Gil Scott-Heron's lyrics hold up a mirror to a troubled, inconsolable soul: one crippled with depression, compelled to experience a pain and hopelessness so intense it brings the narrator to his knees. And yet, one who has a hard-earned consciousness of their situation; that understands and is ultimately trapped by the fear of self destruction or painful healing.

Thanks for sharing that story. I remember when music used to mean something too.

  60. j.... e....

I remember first hearing this album in the living room of my friend Coz's house in Studio City, Ca...we sat and listened, in the dark, with a single candle lit, silently, jaws dropping, hearts beating; our withered nerves temporarily soothed by Gil's amazing lyrics and the incredible band's accompaniment...

  61. W.... M....

Sheer beauty, great quality upload as the original production is very low on the recording levels. This is definately my favourite Scott-Heron tune.

  62. B.... B....
