Genesis - One Man's Fool Lyrics

As the buildings crumble, tumble to the ground
And the dust-filled smoke rises in the air
You know that somebody somewhere looks with pride, they're satisfied

To all who think they know
To everyone that knows that they're right
D'you ever wonder why
D'you never ask the question even in the depths of night?

Now as the daylight fading ends another day
For too many life will never be the same
And it is all for the reason they will never understand

To all who think they know
To everyone that knows that they're right
D'you ever wonder why
D'you never ask the question even in the depths of night?

And on the morning after do you realise
See the ruined faces and the ruined lives
Inside your head do you never have the thought a moment of doubt?

To all who think they know
To everyone that knows that they're right
D'you ever wonder why
D'you never ask the question even in the depths of night?

There are only dreams one like any other
What means the earth to one or few means nothing to another
There are only dreams like any other

Drawing lines upon the sand, on the land, on the sea
Then dying to defend them seems quite meaningless to me

Don't you know what means the earth to some or only one
Can mean just nothing nothing nothing to another

There are only dreams like any other
There are only differences, worth living but not dying for

One man's joy makes another man weep
Nothing you can do is ever gonna change it
One man's saint is another man's fool
One man's hot is another man's cool

And when the war is over, won
Will there be peace for evermore?

Statues carved right out of stone, out of wood, made from gold
Praying for their mercy that won't save their souls

Don't you know what means the earth to some or only one
Can mean just nothing nothing nothing to another

There are only dreams like any other
There are only hopes and beliefs one like any other
(there are only dreams like any other)
Worth living but not dying for
Living but not dying for not killing for
There are only dreams like any other like any other

To all of those who think that they know
All I can say yes all I can say

One man's joy makes another man weep
Nothing you can do is ever gonna change it
One man's saint is another man's fool
One man's hot is another man's cool

There are only dreams like any other
There are only hopes and beliefs, one like any other
There are only dreams like any other...

Genesis One Man's Fool Comments
  1. Eva Glogerová

Incredible - 22 years old and still sooooo awesome! Ray WIlson's voice is original and great, 22 years and still I dont understand why it was "accepted" so badly in U.S.

  2. Jeroen Vuyk

Especially the end from this song is typical Genesis

  3. Jeroen Vuyk

I bought it last week and was specially loved this song.New material for me because I heard only Congo and Shipwrecked from this album.Great album

  4. Jeroen Vuyk

Wonderfull song.Phil was leaving Genesis but the band goes on and make a very good but a underrated album.

  5. László Varga

this album very hot like old band good

  6. THE BEACH BOYS – Summer Days

I honestly don't understand the hate this album gets. Ray Wilson sings great and the instrumentation is great.

  7. Ele

An optimistic vision... A song full of hopes and desideres for the future... God bless Genesis!

  8. belmontdwl

How can some people believe this isn't Genesis?

  9. Louie Diamond

    The Lamb = 9/11

  10. Regis Gomes

Nunca ouvi o Genesis com este vocalista...mas com Peter Gabriel e Phil Collins.....

  11. MeloLand

    Masterpiece!

  12. Nils Olsen

Ray Wilson was not a bad substitute for Phil Collins as lead vocalist of Genesis 19 years ago , I must say...

    Juan Cussa

    Wilson is more

  13. oilingup

Only good track from the album (as well as "Driving The Last Spike" and "Fading Lights" are on the previous album); all the remainder ones (including the nastily overrated "Dividing Line") are Average Joe's dross.

  14. Pieriv

    masterpiece of pop-rock

    Moktar

    Actually is progressive rock.

  15. TheWatcherBis

If there's only one fool man why the hell did this masterpiece get 3 thumbs down?

  16. DDPm6244

The ending of this song reminds me of "Do The Neurotic" and "Jesus He Knows Me" :)

  17. CHRISGT34

    7,000 views? SMMFH!

  18. AGENTARMES

Proof that Genesis knew about 9/11 and did nothing! (kidding) ...wonder if anything cool can be heard when the song is played backwards?

    ABACAB72

Actually, according to Tony Banks, this was written about the Oklahoma City bombings. Although, it can be used to describe 9/11, that wasn't the original inspiration (obviously, since this came out in 1997, and the OK bombings was in 1995).

  19. MrDell292

This and The Dividing Line are the best songs from the CAS Album. Ray Wilson did an excellent job on this album. Defo one of the best genesis albums that have been released

  20. Etta Resel

The moment when nearly 9 minutes feel like 3 -- when you have to replay and replay because the song is still to short.. like it :))

  21. David Snyder

Tony Banks. What an ear he has. This album has some of his best gems on it (though I think Wind and Wuthering had his best jazziest solos). He is a master of keeping it simple and yet harmonically complex.

    durban

@David Snyder He took his cues from Lennon, McCartney, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Paul Simon and a couple of others, and rather mastered the art!

  22. laserus3333

the length of the song is 8:47.THE 1ST PLANE HITH THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AT 8:47 IN THE MORNING ON 9-11 BUT THIS CD WAS RELEASED IN THE 90'S.

    laserus3333

It appears that went over your head.Yeah Most bands write songs about
Buildings tumble & crumble to the ground.one man smiles with pride he's satisfied ,Ashen faces who's lives will never be the same for a reason they will never understand. For those who think they know ,for those that know their right..." and the song length yeah pure coincidence.Or a heads up to the initiated ahead of time.as the OWL worshipping Lucifer lemmings like to do to rid them of their cares and guilt. This would also explain why the music within this CD completely sucks ass as well.

    Mike Reiss

I understand the left eye and right eye thing but it's not applicable in this situation. Anyway, thanks for finally agreeing with me that the song length is just a pure coincidence. Sometimes logic and reasoning wins out to over analyzing and conspiracy theories.

    MRBLONDEIGR

+laserus3333 Huh, that's weird, I never knew before that 9/11 was the only event in history where a building fell down with people in it.

    Mike Reiss

Nope. It didn't go over my head. I just don't agree with your crazy conspiracy theory bullshit.

    kenichimitsurugi

the song was inspired by an IRA terror attack in 96.

  23. Karl Brautigam

Re: The 9/11 and this having come before....Of course NO ONE had Prior Knowledge....O.W.L.S.

    Titaan359

WOW, I thought I was the only one who caught that.

    Todd Nielson

    Kinda freaky, ain't it?

  24. genesis0932

No one lays down chords like Tony. No one.

  25. genesis0932

Music post 4:29 is ridiculous and perfect.

  26. genesis0932

I think this is the best song from CAS. Phenomenal. Tony is heavy, Mike is heavy. A song I would bet they had in their arsenal since ICD and waited for the right time to release to the masses. Tony's chords rule and Mike's arrangement is perfection. Either Tony or Mike could have released on their solo albums. Tony and Mike rule.

  27. TheWatcherBis

I'll go sleeping less ignorant tonight. :-)

  28. BigMarser

@TheWatcherBis: you are right if you say this album was released back in 1997. The recordings were made from Jan to Jul in 1997, but the writing period definitely was in 1996 and before. ;-)

  29. TheWatcherBis

Are you sure it wasn't rather in 1997? Because it's the year I bought this masterpiece. :-)
