The alien story is correct, but I also believe it draws parallels with modern day life and the evil world we live in.
He sees a world ( dreams ) full of happier people living better lives with no fears like war - and we could all have the same IF WE CHOSE TO - but we just keep to our routines and the state suppresses the truth about those good things we could have so as to control us.

Das erste,was ich jemals von Genesis hörte war 1983 "Mama" und "Thats all"im Radio (hr3-damals noch voll auf der Höhe, vergleichbar heute mit radioeins/rbb). Danach dann die ganzen bekannten 80er Singles von "Invisible Touch"fand ich ganz okay u.gut. Aaaaaaaaaaber.... da kannte ich noch nicht den Back-Katalog! Mitte der Neunziger,im Zuge des Neoprog über Marillion/Arena/Flower Kings etc.hörte ich in die ersten Genesis Alben mit Peter Gabriel u.war sowas von angetan davon,dass mir "Invisible touch" wie ein schlechter Witz vorkam. Anschließend war ich totaler Gabriel-Purist u.wollte nix aus der Collins-Phase hören. Ein großes Missverständnis,denn: "Trick of a tail" u."Wind..."- Welch Meisterwerke!!!
Ich habe dann sehr lange(bis heute) gebraucht,um mich mal intensiv auf "Duke" u."Abacab" einzulassen. "Duke"ist (zu meiner großen Überraschung)immer noch Prog und "Abacab" komplett neu,weder "klassisch" u.(noch)nicht "Invisible touch"-Mainstream. Jahrelang ließ ich die Finger davon,weil ich zu oft unkritisch die Meinung übernahm,dass nach "Wind&wuthering"nix gescheites mehr kam,da auch mein Favorite Gitarrist (der brilliante Steve Hackett) danach ausstieg.
Doch nun kann ich "Abacab"ganz anders hören und dem einiges abgewinnen. Gerade "Keep ot dark"ist mein Lieblingssong hiervon,da er fast schon New Wavig rüberkommt,sogar eine gewisse Härte/roughness ausstrahlt und trotzdem catchy Hooklines hat,ohne sich dem Mainstream glattpoliert anzubiedern. Auch "Dodo" u."Me and Sarah Jane" sind großartig u.man erkennt darin mmer noch die alten ProgWurzeln. Meine Favorite Phase ist zwar nach wie vor die mit Steve Hackett,aber mit dem Alter wird man vielleicht offener ...
