Genesis - Broadway Melody Of 1974 Lyrics
Echoes of the Broadway Everglades,
With her mythical madonnas still walking in their shades:
Lenny Bruce, declares a truce and plays his other hand.
Marshall McLuhan, casual viewin', head buried in the sand.
Sirens on the rooftops wailing, but there's no ship sailing.
Klu Klux Klan serve hot soul food and the band plays 'In the Mood'
The cheerleader waves her cyanide wand, there's a smell of
peach blossom and bitter almonde.
Caryl Chessman sniffs the air and leads the parade, he know in a scent,
you can bottle all you made.
There's Howard Hughes in blue suede shoes, smiling at the majorettes
smoking Winston Cigarettes.
And as the song and dance begins, the children play at home
with needles; needles and pins.

Peter Gabriel (Genesis) at his/their finest. AMJ
Lyrics for fly on a windshield eerily align with 9/11. Unintentional...obviously
Superb genesis at their very best. ..ah I miss the Peter Gabriel days
[Verse 1]
There's something solid forming in the air
And the wall of death is lowered in Times Square
No one seems to care
They carry on as if nothing was there
The wind is blowing harder now
Blowing dust into my eyes
The dust settles on my skin
Making a crust I cannot move in
And I'm hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on the freeway
Echoes of The Broadway Everglades
With their mythical madonnas still walking in their shades:
Lenny Bruce declares a truce and plays his other hand
Marshall McLuhan, casual viewing, head buried in the sand
Sirens on the rooftops wailing, but there's no ships sailing
Groucho, with his movies trailing, stands alone with his punchline failing

"Waiting for the windshield on a freeway" .... Chills when you know what's coming!
"Karl chessman sniffs the air" such a British sounding name.
The drums and bass sound restrained, the keyboards too loud.
Get rid of the keyboards and replace them by real strings.
About a Broadway play ! It has all the smell and the lights of New York
Does anyone see the parallel of the lyrics and Nine Eleven?
terrible !
The music is fantastic, I’m glad I saw this concert live, all those years ago.
maybe the best song of the album. Genius
Bizarre - Off The Wall - Genius. Imitated from Rush to Mastodon. AMJ
The slide guitar solo blasted super loud has got to be one of the baddest sounds I ever heard gives me the chills every time. When I had this on cassette in the 80's I thought he sang "macho Magoo and deja vu" instead of "Marshall McCluhan and casual viewing" lol
Read all these comments and that should say enuff.my all time favorite band needs to do one last hoorah for those of us who werent a twinkle in our parents eyes yet.i wuz HOOKED from the very first notes of Peter's first solo record.here we are 40 yrs later and still loving it.still can sing along word. For word(excuse me Peter) a double dose of brilliance 5 amazing amigos. Thanx to Steve for keeping the flame burning.and the incredible The Musical Box for extending there love of this great band to all of us youngsters(54) lol
Those eighth note triplet tom flams: a Phil Collins trademark. What other drummer did this in '74?
Tony Williams?
Wow im 60 and still can not get enough of this album after 43 years
I'm 28 listening to this in 2019 for the 1000th time and it still gives me chills! Glad my dad introduced me to Genesis!
One of the greatest songs from possibly the greatest rock album of all time. Only a privileged few can really dig it and this exclusivity makes it even more enjoyable.
Painfully beautiful, like many of the tracks on this masterpiece of an album it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.Incredible.
In assoluto il pezzo più importante dei Genesis 🐗
INSOMMA....PROBABILMENTE NO...
This work makes "Tommy" seem like a primary school work assignment.
Memories of my dear departed friend Bri "Bram" Stoker, we shared a real love of this track. Rest easy mate....
Collins at his imperious best. No one comes even close, maybe JHB.
If you're reffering to John Bonham, then I'd say he comes close. Bonam was the best Hard Rock & Rock n Roll drummer. But Phil Collins has got to be the best prog drummer of all time !
great album

Wow! This always knocks me out every time. I never tire of listening to it! Just brilliant from Genesis, here! :o) :o)
Un an plus tard sortait A trick of the tail .... L'album magique de Genesis ! Mon préféré . Entangled , Ripples , Mad Man Moon extraordinaire....
For me Fly on a Windshield/Broadway Melody of 1974 is one song,a superb song. 45 years later we can say "Nothing could be done better"
every ones a fluffy one
Long live Rael!
when you drive on a ferry in the middle of the night you go up on the deck and listen to the song with full volume
Rael was already in the hereafter at the beginning of the story.
He transitions.through various realms while asking himself if he's alive or not.
He still existed, so how could he have died? Around half the songs represent memories
of being alive. The Lamia, to me, is his memory of being conceived and the moment of discovering his gender would be male.
The final track is about ascension. Just prior to the spiritual awakening, he finally remembers how he died from drowning in the undertow from trying to ride the rapids and getting stuck underwater until drowning at which point he detaches from the identity of Rael and ascends to the higher awareness of unity with all that is.
So the beginning of the story is not revealed until near the end of the story. Here's the really weird part:
These guys were barely 24 when they made this masterpiece that has gradually become recognized as the apex of 20th century progresive music for humanoids across a variety planetary civilizations. They hit it way out of the park. Try to think of another album this strong since then. Or what album since then comes closest? I would have to say 'Music For 18 Musicians' from 1977. And PG Security from '82. Many would rank The Wall from '79 at this level. And many would also give the nod to Okay Computer by Radiohead or Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm by Joni.
Not sure what year, but Marillion's Misplaced Childhood is quite epic in its own way.
Ahh, what a masterpiece! 💓
I remember when this was 1st released. I bought a copy the day it went on sale. This album has held up well over the years....never really going out of style. The "Lamb" was like no other. It didn't sound like anything other than itself. Genius!!!
Great piece of music. Thanks for sharing
1:18 just never gets old. Goosebumps.
Truth...
Could you imagine some dope going on *"X Factor" or "Britain's Got Nutcases"* and just suddenly pulling this out of their backside if it had never been recorded before!
Gabriel almost goes into a proto Rap with this - "There's Howard Hughes in blue swede shoes...." *AMAZING!*
1:18 Greatest downbeat ever recorded?
John Erbrecht Yes!
One of the greatest moments in all of music.
How prophetic the lyric saying "The Mythical Madonnas still walking in their shades"
"Desperately Seeking Susan" was released in 1985
brilliant, just brilliant
Almost an eerie premonition of 911
Mind yourself and don't step on the sheep.
Explosive and emotional
CLASSIC.
Downright brilliant song writing! Way a head of its time.
Silly question, is the fly on the inner or outer side of the car windshield ? If I judge by the music mood, he is experiencing the full wind blast.
The fly is outside, doing whatever flys do and suddenly ... a car windshield comes by and it's all over
Is an expression of pending doom like "I'm standing like the suicidal guy waiting for the train on the rail tracks." I am English but it's not an expression we use in everyday speach.
Gabriel almost goes into a proto Rap with this - "There's Howard Hughes in blue swede shoes...." *AMAZING!*
Masterpiece ♥♥♥♥♥💯
2:25 + But love the entire song!
Awesome song. Don't like Peter Gabriel's performance on it though. Cramming in a lot of syllables in the beginning, strained and out of tune later on...
Stumbled across an article about Caryl Chessman, thought, yep, I remember the reference.
As I listen, I'm still blown away by this album. A total masterpiece, both musically and lyrically!!
And yes, Steve Hackett is incredibly underrated, and unfamiliar to way too many people.
Of course;
The cheerleader waves her cyanide wand,
The smell of peach blossom and bitter almond
Caryl Chessman sniffs the air...
That last little lullaby bit of guitar and Mellotron starting at 4:24 is beautiful too. That theme appears a couple of times later, I can't remember where.
It's so psychedelic. Like you're being carried away to another universe. Fantastic.
superb Audio!! best upload of _anything_ this month! almost as good as dropping one ;)
thank You! :)
there's just one flaw dude... you've published the wrong lyrics.'ve got two verses there which aren't in it.
There's something solid forming in the air,
And the wall of death is lowered in Times Square.
No-one seems to care,
They carry on as if nothing was there.
----
The wind is blowing harder now,
Blowing dust into my eyes.
The dust settles on my skin,
-----
Making a crust I cannot move in
And I'm hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on the freeway.
Echoes of The Broadway Everglades

This entire brilliant song is a trip. Gabriel’s play on words rivals the most excellent poets ever. For example: Caryl Chessman leads the parade and he knows, in a scent....or is it INNOCENT? This is Peter’s play, for anyone alive during this time it was big news worldwide about Caryl Chessman. Was he guilty? Or was he innocent? But in-a scent, you can bottle all it’s made.
Magnifico. Every single fraction of this (no matter how little) is "magnifica".
Thumbs downing this deserves a slap!
@Squonk Harold or a light tap on the head with a sledgehammer....:)
Eerie atmosphere, fantastic drumming, superb guitar work, and that droning keyboard part... wow!!
Que pasada!, no solo esto sino el disco completo.
1:18 = The ultimate audio experience.
Truth....the absolute truth....
England has produced by far the most talented musicians of the 70s, but Genesis is in a class of its own..The fusion of those guys' genius talents created the perfect storm...each song is a masterpiece. Fly on the Windshield, just under 5 min long, is simply hypnotic. My greatest regret is that i have never seem them live, and i never will..
+Manuela Lamacchia I saw them in concert. I have seen a lot of concerts, and by far, Genesis was the best! So glad I got to see them. <3
@Manuela Lamacchia Lurve me some "Yes" too....
2018 busts a nut to this track still!!!
There are no words...........
Truth....
Masterpiece !!!!
What a Song.
Fantastico brano
My favorite guitar solo ever anywhere.
I heard it for the first in live yesterday in Budapest by Steve Hackett. It still made me have goosebumps after 30 years and countless hearing.
10 Years old by that time but the shipsailing still
Counts; 20 i came in touch with people 10 years older, meeting Genesis also. ..16 years later i became a Son,.. playing needles and pins now grown forces obeying the field, trespassing the settled law.. no games by mum indeed, just reflecting some.
I think Faith No More would do an amazing cover of this song. The rhythm and the use of the keyboards with the guitar always make me remember them
Graucho with his movies trailing, stands alone with his punchline failing. Broadway Melody is like rap. good rap.
peter gabriel at the beginning of the top of his game that would last for may years....great great visionary composer/performer
excellent
0:17 that fucking sound....
What a song! Wow. Just wow.
I first listened to this awesome album 44 years ago when i was 12 years old. I was heavily into bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin then so TBH Genesis didn't quite cut the mustard with me. But when my father borrowed this album from his friend i decided to have a listen and i was completely Blown away by every track. I have bought several other Genesis albums since then but nothing compares to the sheer Brilliancy of this awesome album.
Even to this day 44 years on and many Heavy and Metal albums later, i can honestly say that this Album remains in my top 5 albums of all time. And that's a lot of albums.
Thank you Genesis for making this Fantastic album and thank you MoonlitKnight009 for sharing this with us. :)
The 70s really were the golden age of rock n' roll.
and 1974 was the peak.
"and I,m hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on the freeway",,fucking great line
A masterpiece...
when I die I want this to take me
Fucking Epic, what were you expecting less than being blown away I found Peter Gaberial back in 1968.
I was 5 years old when this first came out. Then in my teens when I was able to buy music I really got into this band, they were my first 'big' live gig in Wembley stadium1987. Listening to this today STILL gives me goosebumps. Doesn't that say it all....
one of the best tunes
STRATOSFERICA
Favorite track on the lamb, for me the two songs make 1 jewel, the way they merge, exiting.
What does he mean by the Marshall McLuhan line? Is he a fan or a skeptic?
probably one of the finest pieces of music ever written.
1:18 Literally everything explodes
LOVE THIS DANCE
First time I listened to this album, I put it louder at the beginning of this track and it caught me by surprise at 1:18, but it sounded phenomenal, so powerful!
In a scent, Innocent. Lyrical genius
As morbid of a meditation on Death as one could ask for. My theory is that the story is Rael's near-death vision after having OD'd, and the Fly is the wall of smack hitting him. I do believe he survives, attaining Salvation from It. Supper's Ready in its mature form.
Awesome song, the instumental part is mind blowing
