Gaye, Marvin - What's Happening Brother Lyrics
Hey baby, what'cha know good
I'm just gettin' back, but you knew I would
War is hell, when will it end,
When will people start gettin' together again
Are things really gettin' better, like the newspaper said
Can't find no work, can't find no job my friend
Money is tighter than it's ever been
Say man, I just don't understand
What's going on across this land
Ah what's happening brother,
Oh ya, what's happening my man
Are they still gettin' down where we used to go and dance
Will our ball club win the pennant,
do you think they have a chance
And tell me friend, how in the world have you been.
What's the deal man, what's happening
What's happening brother
Ah what's happening brother
What's happening my man
Ah what's happening brother
What's been shaken up and down the line
I want to know cause I'm slightly behind the time.

great album! Makes me think of my mom and dad growing up as a kid
2020 & this song is just as relevant as it was back in 1971.
No way no how?
Marvin Gaye. This mans music still makes an important public statement.”save the babies” “ God is my friend” etc.We could learn a lot from just listening to the words.
This Album reminds me of my Daddy. It’s still one of our favorites to this day. My Daddy lived this album. Not the drug part, just the Army, War, coming home to a country that didn’t love him, but he still fought for. College graduate, married to my momma 50 years. Daddy is still saying What’s happening Brotha?
best album ever recorded

"What's been shaking up and down the line, I wanna cause I'm slightly behind the times"... This reminds me of when my highschool buddy came back from Desert Storm. Goes to show how this song, this album will resonate DECADES to come!!!

Hey baby, what'cha know good
I'm just gettin' back, but you knew I would
War is hell, when will it end,
When will people start gettin' together again
Are things really gettin' better, like the newspaper said
What else is new my friend, besides what I read
Can't find no work, can't find no job my friend
Money is tighter than it's ever been
Say man, I just don't understand
What's going on across this land
Ah what's happening brother,

Are they still gettin' down where we used to go and dance
Will our ball club win the pennant,
Do you think they have a chance

This album scared Berry Gordy to death. Motown was about producing non-threatening pop that would cross over to white teens. He was not inclined to release a protest album with such a strong message. This song was rarely aired because the message was waaaaay too deep for the time. Black servicemen coming home from combat to discrimination and joblessness. Nobody wanted to acknowledge that. Smokey Robinson would later say that Black servicemen would tell him that his music got them through the war and it is his proudest moment. Nearly 50 years later nobody wants to acknowledge the negative effects of that war. This song is profound.
Dam...this song wasn't long enough....best composition on the Album..
I grew up listening to this music back in the 70's, and it's still hot and more relevant today than ever.
One of the greatest Singer's,Writers, Producers of all time Mr Marvin Gaye.

This whole album reminds me of my Daddy. I’m a Vietnam baby. Daddy came home, praise GOD. Daddy and I still can sing the heck out of this album . Our us time. Daddy’s girl 4 life. We still great each other with.. What’s Happening!
Love The Background Singers, The Andantes , who sang on all Detroit-Motown Songs
That whole album is ❤️
This song blew my mind when I was 14 years old.
It was when I realized that this song had *phrasing* ...it didn't just have a short loop of predictable notes, like modern pop music, but went thru an entire journey of chords and harmonies across different keys (something that I had thought exclusive to classical music).
This song really helped open up my mind to the possibilities of music.
Beautiful
James was a "jazzer" (along with the majority of The Funk Brothers) AND he played with his one finger (his first finger) .....that's why he's unique....I'm only saddened that he dies so young (due to his alcoholism)....he could have been a great mentor to many. However, his legacy (along with his Funk Brothers) is beyond question.
Marvin was the Goat, back in the Motown dayz! Hits after Hits👍
Hey was the low key BLACK LIVES MATTER movement leader, he talked about the same issues, 40 years later we are still saying "WHAT'S HAPPENING BROTHER, FOR REAL THOUGH
I still play this 2019 ,this song gives inspiration, and hope, Real Talk!!!!!!

My grandpa put me on this kind of music when I was a small cat. So thankful, big ups to you PJ
If you want to end war forever give every national anthem a James Jamerson bassline.
I need this on wax too
I wish i could go back to 1971

🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 HBD MARVIN GAYE!!!
Hey Bruce, this is the greatest album of all time! Period! Hands down!
And just think Berry Gordy didn't want him to release this album!!
you're right.. he said it was terrible...but thank god for a brother by the name of Renaldo Benson who encourage Marvin to write and express his political views when at that time it was needed...
I miss this era of music that could transport you to spiritual places only marvin could, not this noise we are assaulted with these days
Natural talent reinforced by hard work and dedication made Marvin the legend he still is,unlike the so called " stars" of today who resort to scandals and nudity to compensate for their lack of talent,so nauseating. Miss you Marvin
Incredible arrangement. Jamerson, Messina , David Van De Pitte. Forever class.
THe greatest album ever
If it's by Marvin it's alright in my book!! So, there I've said my piece! LOL I just joined you, please return.
Love this song
And tell me friend how in the world have you been. WOW
LOVE THIS MAN
Black soldiers fought in WW1 and WW11 and Vietnam for a country that didn't give two shits about them. My grandfather who is still alive today is 94 years old served in WW2 said he was treated better by the Germans than he was here back in the states. Ridiculous
And none of them got the GI Bill either!
Hey Bruce, this is the greatest album of all time!!!!!!
For everyone wanting to harp on about the good ole days .......
This album was beaten in the charts and radio play by the Partridge Family..... by a wide margin. :)
Thankfully we mostly remember the good stuff.
"JAMERSON!!!"
Marvin was a a true talent mercy
my favorite song from my favorite album. A true masterpiece!
To my mommy R.I.P. this song make me really think about the good days.
So sorry for your lost
I never thought I'd say this but I've always listened to the live version of this song and oddly enough, I think the studio is much more poweful. It puts you (mentally) in a 1970s city. God this is pure gold!
Me marvin and a bottle wow!! Fire!!! How is miss growing up
The most sincere song i ever heard that doesn't have to do with sex, marvin is the best
Uma das músicas mais lindas da história
yeah marvin, yeah Detroit.
Love this
I think this was the end of the stranglehold Berry Gordy had over his Motown artists.
Marvin and Stevie spearheaded that and created mutiny within Motown and they both Blu up
You're correct.
Marvin got the control he wanted, recording this album against Berry's initial wishes. And once Stevies contract was up and saw the control Marvin got/was doing, he wanted it to. So he (Stevie) got it, and stayed. And they both produced some great albums and songs of that era that didn't fit the model model of the late 60's.
This song takes me to another space
Right on... 😎
I don't want to know"."
Best singer ever
No words can describe this 🎸 jam, but magnificent., simply magnificent.
He's blaming me for not concieving his own children.
This is my favourite track from an album that, push come to shove, I'd say was the best of all time. Just a personal opinion. Nice one Marvin.
make me think of people who were in Vietnam War
It should cuz that's what it was about
GODS' CROONER !!
this album should be been entitled " The Book of Marvin" and then be added to the Bible !!!!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
*70s music was uplifting, I know cause of grew up on it😍*
There is a time and place for everything.
One of the greatest songs of all time! Love the line: How in the world have you been? My brother, sister, mother, father, friend...
