Gaye, Marvin - Try It Baby Lyrics

Now you're moving on up, pretty baby
You're leaving me behind
Everybody seems to love you
Oh, you're doing just fine, fine, fine

But take away your good looks
And all your fancy clothes
Why don't you just
Try it baby
Try it baby
Try it baby
Try it baby

You'll see
Nobody loves you but me

Now you tell me that you so busy, pretty baby
You ain't got much time
Oh, how will I remember
When all your time was mine, mine, mine

Well move on back cross the track, baby
Where you came from
Why don't you just
Try it baby
Try it baby
Try it baby
Try it baby

You'll see
That nobody loves you but me
Nobody loves you but me

I really want to hold you, pretty baby
In my arms again
But I can't get close to you
For all your loving friend, friend, friend
But take your name from the bright lights baby
And tell me that you are all through
Come on and
Try it honey
Try it baby
Try it sweetheart
Try it honey
You'll see, nobody loves you but me

On this day in 1964 {May 23rd} Marvin Gaye performed "You're A Wonderful One"* and "Try It Baby" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...
And both songs peaked at #15 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, "You're A Wonderful One" for two weeks on April 12th, 1964 and "Try It Baby" for one week on July 19th, 1964...
Both records made the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, "You're A Wonderful One" at #3 and "Try It Baby" at #6...
Between 1962 and 2005 the Washington, DC native had sixty-three records on the Hot R&B Singles chart, thirty-eight made the Top 10 with thirteen reaching #1, plus an additional seven peaked at #2...
Twenty-one of his sixty-three charted records were duets; twelve with Tammi Terrell, five with Diana Ross, and two each with Mary Wells and Kim Weston...
And he had one charted record as a member of a quartet, "Pops, We Love You (A Tribute to Father)", with Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder...
Sadly, Marvin Pentz Gay Jr. passed away on April 1st, 1984, one day before his 45th birthday...
    May he R.I.P.
    * Some internet sites claim he did performed "You're A Wonderful One" on the May 23rd, 1964 'Bandstand' show, some say maybe he did???

    S.... G....

Yes, The Supremes with their Former Member Barbara Diane Martin who wasn't allowed to join the Group because her Mother didn't trust the validity of The Contract. They did background vocals on "You're A Wonderful One", and also did handclaps and the like. The Spinners also made their bones doing Backup for Marvin Gaye on a TV Show as well. In 2002 in The UK A Show called Popstars The Rivals had each contestant sing and had other Guys or Girls to sing backup for them that way the judges could see who had the best chemistry with each other. Although the fans voted One Group Girls Aloud became Superstars, The Guys One True Voice tanked. Girls Aloud had a production team called Xenomania who were very influenced by Motown & Phil Spector who gave them 21 Top Tens 4 Number Ones and Six Platinum Albums. They also gave Cher her Comeback Smash "Believe"

  35. N.... ....

    D.SMITH:
    With reference to the Temptations,
Marvin Gaye, & David Ruffin leading.
FYI, When Try it baby ,came out,
David Ruffin was sing with the
Temptations. Also, every one of the
Tempts had the capability to lead.
It just so happened that David got the
Call for My Girl, and the rest is history.
Eddie was lead on their first chart
busters, starting with, " The way you
do the things you do". ....And the classic all time favorite " I want a love
I can see" was lead by Paul.
What made the Tempts so dynamic is
that they could all lead yet the had /have impeccable 5 part harmony. So
You add Marvin with "Try it baby" is
Like putting the icing or candles on
    the already perfect cake.
With respect to Diana Ross & duets:
    Well, Diana's 1st born was Aug. 14th,
1971...... back in 1964, Mary Wells
Was the Motown Diva; and the Marvelettes we're still the top Motown
    Girl group.
    D.SMITH- (Mr. Classic R&B Professor)

    D.... S....

This is all correct, and true. Good information for any Motown novices out there. However, David is not singing lead on this song. This is a Marvin solo. You can hear David singing the lead tenor notes, in the background, which is the top note, that he inherited from Elbridge Bryant. Usually, Eddie sang the top tenor note, but sometimes they would switch parts around, according to the harmonic blend they wanted A true Motown fan should already be schooled in this history, or at least a Temps connoisseur. Kudos!

  40. m.... r....

Diana Ross did record this song with the Supremes and Temptations, the album released in 1968 or 69.

    m.... r....

@mike ritchie Yes, she she did. Much later.

  41. P.... P....

This is what it would have been like if Marvin joined Then Temps instead of Ruffin!

    P.... P....

History did what it should have.

    P.... P....

I think they would have still made it big cus he fit right in.

    P.... P....

Marvin joining the Temps would be like Teddy when he join Harold Melvin, a lotta fiction.

  42. p.... h....

a 3 cd compilation of Diana Ross singing TRY IT BABY was heard by me the other day - she did record it

  43. k.... ....

Released in either April or May 1964 on Motown's Tamla Records Label as Tamla 54095 and written by Berry Gordy

    k.... ....

    kjchicago1 smooth

  44. M.... ....

FYI, the song was written by Berry Gordy ABOUT Diana Ross, not FOR her. Not even she had the power (certainly not in 1964) to refuse to record anything, i.e. "Where Did Our Love Go".

    M.... ....

How can he be talking about Diana Ross when he's saying "nobody loves you but me?" Everyone knows he and Diana Ross couldn't even be in the same room together because they couldn't stand each other???!!!

    M.... ....

Berry Gordy wrote the song, Marvin Gaye only sang it.

    M.... ....

@jojamful That's not true. Marvin has admitted some jealousy because Diana was favored, but he has never said he couldn't stand her, nor has she ever said that about him. Perhaps you're confusing their initial recording sessions for their duets album when a pregnant Diana understandably objected to Marvin's weed and his objection to refraining from using due to his idea that he worked better high. Diana refused to record with him and the sessions were later completed individually. They went on to participate in photo sessions for the album together as well as frequently attended each other's shows.

    M.... ....

    Thanks Musicball.

    M.... ....

Well, at some time they could, jojamful, they have a daughter to prove it:)

  45. D.... W....

Marvin Gaye and The Temptations on the same track! You can hear them as clear as day too! Great track!

    D.... W....

Didn't know that. Now that you say it I recognize them

    D.... W....

yessir..the TEMPS grooving well in there!!!! You know its them immediately..Eddie's tenor rings out

    D.... W....

    BluesInMySoul: Yes!

    D.... W....

Demetrius Williams Awesome track!! Listen to Eddie and Melvin's voices in background. Love those tempting Temptations😍

  46. J.... C....

Shoreflight: This was the A side. The B side was called "If My Heart Could Sing" and it, too, is a gorgeous piece of work. Check it out:    Marvin Gaye - If My Heart Could Sing (Vinyl)

    J.... C....

Beautiful song John, 'If my heart could sing' , thanks for suggesting it.

  47. A.... L....

A lot of people don't know this but David Ruffin also lead on this song he comes in singing at 2:14. Marvin Gaye Featuring David Ruffin both lead on this song backed up by the remaining Temptations Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Otis Williams & Melvin Franklin. Marvin & David voices sound identical, the difference between there voices is this, Marvin's voice is more softer an smoother, David's voice is soft with the edge or growl. Both Acts are my all time favorites.

  48. C.... C....

this is one of my love songs

    C.... C....

    Mine, too:)

  49. s.... ....

Was this an A side or a B side and what was the flip side? Thanks for posting.

  50. m.... a....

try it baby!!! silky soul...no one can compare

  51. T.... T....

I heard this today and it been awhile and like you I could tell it was the Temptations singing background, they have a style all their own. You are right two class acts.

    T.... T....

Bro. Raymond can sing this song by his self , lead and background and sound Good!!!

  52. P.... J....

temptations were a wonderful contribution to this smooth cut. To hear Eddie at the top soaring, Melvin down below and David, Otis and Paul harmonizing in the middle makes this a feast for the ears. The first time I heard this song I could tell that the Temptations were backing Marvin. Two class acts.

  53. I.... R....

    #underrated

    I.... R....

underrated by who? motown fans know it, marvin gaye fans definitely know it...it was top 15 on the pop chart, top 10 on the r&b chart, appeared on a hit album, & was one of the long string of hits marvin had in '64-'65.

    I.... R....

Inner Rhythm Barry White and Mav in were going to collaborate on album before Marvin death.

  54. S.... G....

I can not say enough about Marvin!!! I love him:)!

  56. t.... ....

    SMOOTH...One of his best!

    t.... ....

    tropicalpancake56 I agree!

    t.... ....

Barry White and Marvin were to collaborate on a album before Marvin passing.
