Gaye, Marvin - I'm Your Puppet Lyrics

Pull the string and I'll wink at you, I'm your puppet
I'll do funny things if you want me to, I'm your puppet

I'll be yours to have and to hold
Darling you've got full control of your puppet

Pull another string and I'll kiss your lips, I'm your puppet
Snap your finger and I'll turn you some flips, I'm your puppet

Your every wish is my command
All you gotta do is wiggle your little hand
I'm your puppet, I'm your puppet

I'm just a toy, just a funny boy
That makes you laugh when you're blue
I'll be wonderful, do just what I'm told
I'll do anything for you
I'm your puppet, I'm your puppet

Pull them little strings and I'll sing you a song, I'm your puppet
Make me do right or make me do wrong, I'm your puppet

Treat me good and I'll do anything
I'm just a puppet an you hold my string, I'm your puppet
Yeah, I'm your puppet

Walking, talking, living, loving puppet
I'm hanging on a string girl, I'll do anything now

I'm a walking, talking, living, loving puppet, and I love you

I'm a smiling happy face when you want me to
Even make you happy when you're feeling blue

Marvin said Tammi's illness and death devastated him and in part, that's what led to him cutting ties with recording any more songs in the classic Motown studio system. He felt Tammi's death was almost symbolic, as if she had died for all the people who never found love. I think he truly loved her- not so much in a boyfriend/girlfriend way; he said theirs was like the purest kind of friendship and love you could have.

Tammi and Marvin were made in Hercule's cluster beyond ordinary gaseous clouds, this song is too way beautiful

Man! That is one of the best comments I've ever read. Really love the mythology drop-  and it fits brilliantly. Tammi and Marvin really did have that something that is more than merely mortal.

Thank you for uploading this song, tomovox! I just read the book that Tammi's sister wrote several years ago. As I listen to this song and the other songs from the "Easy" album, Tammi does sound different. She sounds more nasal and her voice sounds forced. Although Valerie Simpson has denied these are her vocals rather than Tammi's, I am inclined to believe that BOTH Tammi and Valerie Simpson's voices are on this album. Ludie Montgomery, Tammi's sister has written that "Tammi is singing, and Valerie helped her to make this happen." Johnny Bristol is quoted in the book as saying: "It was not a big deal at the time. I know where Tammi is singing, and it's all OK". "You can hear them both and it's what needed to be done." There are several paragraphs in this book that talk about the "Easy" album. I'm not sure why everyone comments that ALL of the vocals were done by one or the other. I believe, like many things in life, that the answer lies between the two extremes: BOTH Tammmi and Valerie voices are on the Easy album. I interpret Ludie's comments in the book as meaning that Tammi's voice is featured on the parts that she could sing, and Valerie's voice is on other parts. Tammi's voice definitely sounds different, but considering she was in the last stages of her illness, I'm sure this took its toll on Tammi's voice, vocal control, etc.

    K.... ....

Hi, Kirstalie. I need to buy that book. The issue of whether or not Tammi is on this album has been one of the biggest issues Marvin Gaye made those comments that it wasn't Tammi, but Valerie singing her parts. I will say this: when I read those comments, to me, it surprised me, and yet it didn't. I always thought Tammi's voice was so different on that album and reading what Marvin Gaye said, it was like "AHA!" It seemed entirely plausible. There were only two songs where it sounded 100% like Tammi: "I Can't Believe You Love Me," and "More, More, More." Like you said, "I believe, like many things in life, that the answer lies between the two extremes: BOTH Tammi and Valerie voices are on the Easy album" and those two songs in particular are definitely Tammi.

But here's the thing about those songs- those both were originally Tammi solo performances with Marvin being dubbed in. The only thing is, on "I Can't Believe You Love Me," the verses were swapped, with the second verse becoming the first and the first becoming the last. Other than the song being given a brighter, crisper remix, it's the exact same song that had been released as Tammi's solo single.

My feeling is that Valerie is 100% an upstanding person, a good person and wonderful human being. That album was a means to provide additional income for Tammi, again, according to what Marvin Gaye said, so if it took Valerie having to sing her part, what she did was heroic. I say that because if she did indeed perform on the album and continues to maintain it was all Tammi, then that is integrity and character that is very rare in people. Also it shows tremendous loyalty to preserving Tammi's legacy.

If it turns out those vocals are all Tammi, then I could see her illness coloring the way she sounded. I still have to think that Valerie did the vocals, except for the two Tammi solos with Marvin's voice being dubbed in. But out of respect for both Tammi and Valerie, I'm yielding to what Valerie has said all along.

    K.... ....

I think you have a good perspective on that, tomovox. I will defer to Valerie's comments as well, and yes, regardless of who is singing what and where, Valerie Simpson's actions and attitude are heroic either way. After I read Ludie Montgomery's book I began wishing that Tammi had been born in a more recent time so that her cancer would perhaps had been more treatable. However, when reading about the kind of tumor she had, astrocytoma, the prognosis is still the same, 50 years later. The prognosis is 2-3 years, just like 1967 when Tammi's cancer was first diagnosed. Unfortunately, there has been little progress made on the type of tumor and cancer Tammi had😟

    K.... ....

Hi DJ Kirst. Thanks for your comment. You and Kirstalie have made me more determined to get that book. And it's so sad that after all these years, there still hasn't been much progress on so many illnesses and diseases. Tammi was far too young to have had to endure so much and still pass away. I don't know why, but this song and "The Onion Song" are difficult for me to listen to. I think it's the sort of melancholy edge of both that just underscores the tragedy of losing Tammi.

    K.... ....

tomovox, I am actually Kirstalie and DJKirst. When I commented a second time for some reason, YouTube registered me under my other name. I must have 2 names apparently. Anyway, DJKirst and Kirstalie2 are the same person: me! Technology is not my forte, but music is, so I have appreciated the opportunity to discuss the great singer that was Tammi Terrell. By the way, I found Ludie Montgomery's book on Amazon.

+Lois Weiss  You know, Lois, I still can't listen to this song without getting a little sad. Definitely, like you said, they did an excellent job on this.  It just has a kinda sad vibe, especially realizing this was Tammi's last album.

  26. D.... M....

I really agree with you on that. There have been a lot of great duets over the years, a lot of great songs, but I honestly believe when you think about it, there hasn't really been another duet pairing that has endured so long in the general public's mind. Actually, when you think about it, the only other duet that really has had the same impact on the public is the very songwriting pair that wrote so many of Marvin's and Tammi's hits: Ashford and Simpson. How amazing is that!

  27. D.... M....

You're very welcome! Of the many people who will watch this, I know you'll have a very deep appreciation for its beauty.

  28. D.... M....

Well thank you very much for such a nice comment! Yes, this song is one of my favorites and I'm really happy you like it too!

  29. T.... ....

@tomovox yea she did kinda sounded..uh...different!! lol I think it is Val impersonating her because she was too ill, but yea i understand why she would deny it though, love it regardless! :)

  30. D.... M....

@TheMotownjunkie That whole issue of if Valerie Simpson was singing Tammi's parts has been going back and forth for some time now. On the one hand, I remember thinking that Tammi did seem to sound different on that album. Then I read Marvin Gaye's bombshell as revealed in a book written on him. Valerie Simpson states emphatically it was not her doing the vocals. I feel it's very noble of Ms. Simpson to not want to take anything away from Tammi's legacy.

  31. T.... ....

@tomovox yea they had a consistency they had hit after hit. Sad, that Tammi got ill w/the brain tumor who knows what would have been store for her (solo) and their duets. But it was said Valerie Simpson sang on this? Wonder if it's true?

  32. D.... M....

@TheMotownjunkie You are going to LOVE the Complete Duets collection! I don't want to give anything away, but there is one recording that didn't receive a release that is absolutely electrifying! You wrote about Marvin and Tammi being a sensational duo- I honestly can't think of another duo that has the same sort of instant recognition and impact across the board as Marvin and Tammi. There have been other great duos, but Marvin and Tammi seem to be the icons in the field.

  33. T.... ....

This is one of the most beautiful Marvin & Tammi songs i have ever heard!! Can't wait to get my Complete Duets album. Such a sensational duo! This is an outstanding cover, and the Funk Brothers are outstanding!! Love it!

  34. D.... M....

@Tommyfazz Hi Tommy! Thank you very much for doing that! Will be nice to have others hear this beautiful cover.

  35. T.... ....

I've shared this (your) vid on facebook Tommy :o)

  36. D.... M....

@Tommyfazz Thank you Tommy! It's also very nice to see that people are getting that same vibe about the song's mood.

"wistfulness" ...BINGO! Sometimes I'm searching for a word and I love it when someone comments and they hit it right on the head.

  37. T.... ....

boss Tomo! :o) as a further point- there IS a touch of wistfulness in this beautiful rendition.

  38. T.... ....

    boss Tomo! :o)

@mattforte192 You're very welcome Matt! Even though this was only an album track, it's one I keep going back to over and over. I'm glad you like this too and that you get that feeling I have of getting emotional when I hear this everytime.

  40. m.... ....

I was doing pretty well with this song until the last verses which were "added" compared to the Purify version, and then I get a bit emotional as they were singing! Marvin and Tammi's backstories aside, I like both versions--this one is especially nice to have a female perspective, and what's not to love about Marvin and Tammi anyway? I didn't know this was covered at Hitsville until your post--thanks for some more knowledge!
