Gaslight Anthem, The - Red At Night Lyrics

I was born in a town where the rivers flow free
On a January night when the cold winds freeze
I got an Irish name and an injury
A blessing and a curse cast down on me

Ain't nobody got the blues like me
Ain't nobody got the blues like me

It was a blood red sky on the morning tide
There was a cold wind blowin' when I left that night
And the warning bells rang, all right, all right
Shoulda stayed home with you that night

Ain't nobody played the fool like I
Ain't nobody played the fool like I

Things got bad and things got worse
Half like a blessing, half like a curse
Seems a blessing's so hard to see sometimes
Got a little clearer 'bout dusk last night

Ain't nobody got a blessing like mine
Ain't nobody got a blessing like mine

It's a red sky night and I'm doin' all right
Red sky night and I'm doin' just fine

Black Hack xz nothin to be sad about!

  3. J.... M....

For all the dumb fucks saying Brian ripped off Woodie Guthrie... Have you never stopped to realise it is merely a tribute?

    J.... M....

Exactly, they've always taken pieces from the past to paint a picture of nostalgia. Honestly I think it's one of the reasons I love their writing so much.

  4. S.... G....

2008? made my day in 2016! thx for s sharing with us

    S.... ....

    Thank you

  7. C.... H....

It doesn't matter if the took the chords from Wilco. I'm sure they paid for the rights to them and the rhythm. in my opinion way better use of the chords. Gaslight killed it.

  8. J.... P....

    One of my favorites

  9. N.... ....

If TGA are ripping off Billy Bragg and Wilco, then they must be ripping off Woody Guthrie, because the lyrics are his in "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key".

    N.... ....

+The 59 Sound are the lyrics the same? BB & wilco's rendition of WG's unrecorded song has different lyrics, but same structure, and lilt... are there additional lyrics by WG less frequently reproduced ?

  10. A.... C....

im ashamed this is the first time ive heard this

    A.... C....

As u should be lol, think of it like a christening.

  11. A.... W....

    so perfect

  12. T.... ....

    fuckin' miss her

  13. M.... V....

    ♡♥♡

  14. J.... J....

No...the tune was around before the Gaslight Anthem, assuming that's who you referring to with TGA.

  15. J.... J....

Thats because thats what the tune is...It is the same tune with new lyrics. Still good though.

  16. q.... ....

It's not a Guthrie tune, TGA wrote it. Fallon penned the lyrics.

  17. A.... M....

    Anyone got tabs for harmonica?

  18. R.... S....

Red at night, sailor's delight, red in morning, sailor's warning. 2000 years ago they knew this: " when it is evening you say 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red'; and in the morning 'It will be foul weather today for the sky is red and threatening' " Matt 16:2,3a

    R.... S....

    R Schem thanks

  19. Y.... ....

I hope you're all doing alright.

  20. H.... L....

It's the same song...Brian just borrowed the melody and put his own lyrics over the top.

  21. A.... D....

Despite this song being like way over yonder in the minor key, Brians voice makes this

  22. i.... ....

    1st verse is totally me

  23. S.... B....

Maaaan, just heard Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key just now for the first time, not going lie i'm feeling kinda cheated, if you could dig up that interview, thatd be awesome.

  24. T.... ....

its a ripoff of way down yoder in the minor key damit

  25. A.... N....

It was a family guy reference, don't worry about it. Fair enough, it's cool that you've been following them for a long time however I just don't like seeing negative stuff on what is one of my favourite songs. Granted you're entitled to your opinion, take it you're not a fan of '45'?

  26. A.... N....

    shut up meg.

  27. S.... B....

    good song, blatant ripoff

  28. E.... N....

    sink or swim

  29. C.... ....

Can't stop listening to this song. Its addictive.

  30. J.... ....

does anyone have tabs for harmonica ?

  31. A.... K....

    This album is flawless.

  32. A.... S....

    proper love this song

  33. M.... D....

I have been listening to this song on a loop for about an hour in a half...SO good.

  34. L.... ....

@120Vanquish120 I love the fact that their songs can be interpreted in so many different ways. To me, this song speaks to my very soul. The singer discovered misfortune in his early life, regret in his later life, and finally found the strength to see the red sky night, or "sailor's delight." The verse touches upon the "just vague enough to apply to many things" hardships he endures until the final verse where he reveals he has the strength to see the good in life. Love this song.

  35. K.... ....

@Thor27436 To each their own, I personally like the 59 sound more. Sink or Swim is a great album though.

  36. S.... P....

This song has such a great use of the harmonica, it just adds the the atmosphere perfectly.

  37. K.... ....

@TheDavetoole The 59 sound is their best album.

  38. t.... ....

    Beautiful

  39. Z.... F....

@PetitChapeauRouge14 DId you see Brian cover Billy Bragg's "A New England" with Frank Turner? Great cover with a pretty funny intro.

  40. R.... S....

it'd be so sweet if i could figure out that harmonica tab/tune. I want to do a legit cover

  41. L.... H....

I'm in love with this song!

  42. 1.... ....

@rayggallagher1974 I think every one knows but I prefer the lyrics and vocals on this version. But I love Wilco and Billy Bragg also.

  43. N.... R....

check out my drive cover and subscribe and add a comment and like it thanks

  44. w.... ....

@calderesque1 Wow, you really woulda been crying 'rip off' in the 50's, when most songs had the exact same 12 bar blues arrangement!

  45. N.... R....

check out my drive cover gimme some feed back please.. dont be too harsh thanks

  46. b.... ....

    i love harmonicas

  47. c.... ....

Still haven't found a bad song. Awesome band

  48. E.... S....

I love love love love this song. I wish it would go on forever.

  49. 1.... ....

I Love the symbolism of the lyrics. Meeting a girl is the blessing, and a break up is the curse, the red sky at night is a sign of good things to come. That's my interpretation of this song anyway. It's helped me through some depressing times in my life. Life is full of hardships, you need to keep looking to the future.

  50. R.... M....

@calderesque1 It's not ripped off, Brian said himself how he wrote the words to the Billy and Wilco song.

  51. R.... M....

@billthaxton Most of them aren't acoustic.

  52. N.... ....

@calderesque1 The Gaslight Anthem was established in 2005. This song's publication date was in June 2007.
New bands take their inspirations from other bands/songwriters etc.
I don't see it as a problem that they play/"wrote" a song that sounds similar with another song on their FIRST album 2 years after they met... Brian Fallon has a very good voice and this band is really really good (what gets rarer and rarer).Well.. yerr that's my opinion. ; )

  53. N.... N....

@billthaxton to get technical there celtic punk :P

  54. M.... ....

    sweet sweet love

  55. T.... P....

@calderesque1 Sorry it's not, the patterns are similar but the chord progressions aren't the same. The lyrics are entirely different, just because it sounds familiar doesn't mean its "ripped off".

  56. c.... ....

@mattmattmatt85 lol ok thought this was familiar!!!! ha. i just reposted what you said...didn't realize someone else recognized it was ripped. :)

  57. c.... ....

I normally don't say this... as good as the song is lyrics wise.. it's ripped off of Billy Bragg & Wilco's "Over yonder K". nobody does folky music quite like billy bragg and people deserve to know this song isn't original!!!!!!!!

  58. m.... ....

    @mattmattmatt85 *HALF of the hits

  59. m.... ....

@finalconflictpro I know theyre 100% basic chords. Have of the hits of the past century probably have the same 4 chord progression, but just give the other one a listen... It's exactly the same. That being said, I still love this version by Gaslight.

  60. m.... ....

Gaslight didn't actually write the music to this... just the lyrics.

Billy Bragg and Wilco did...the song is call "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key"....with lyrics from Woody Guthrie.

    Great song though!

  61. A.... ....

If I can listen to one band for the rest of my life, it would be Gaslight Anthem!! Whooooo!!!!

  62. s.... ....

    great song

  63. P.... ....

    I love them.... they're a good band!!!

  64. N.... N....

@kellyclarksonisgreat thats cause its 3 chords haha

  65. V.... L....

I love this songgggg and I love Gaslight. <3

  66. J.... C....

My son just tossed me to this tune... LOVE IT!!!
But I gotta say... You call it Punk... but this tune is 100% Americana. Guess its the Jersey comin outa these boys... Reminds me of The Boss...
AND THAT IS A GOOD THING!!!

  67. R.... K....

    1 Juli AMSTERDAM!! =D

  68. l.... ....

was just about to post the same thing lol love this song heard the bragg song just last week instantly thought of this, hmm makes u wonder good band though

  69. s.... q....

i love the gaslight anthem SO MUCH! they are gods... i've done two covers if anyone wants to check them out...great expectations and this song- although i killed this song ha

    thanks :D

  70. h.... ....

The gaslight anthem always write beautifully optimistic songs about bad situations.

  71. s.... ....

    Calvins versions better

  72. R.... ....

Just got tickets to see them At Manchester Academy 24th June........

  73. g.... ....

one of the most optimistic songs i've heard in a long time. beautiful. i'm gonna write song based on it right now.

  74. b.... ....

me too... totally.. I can relate to the entire song

  75. S.... A....

    how is this NOT punk?

  76. m.... e....

    u george best?

  77. G.... ....

i gonna see 'em live next yeah :D

  78. t.... d....

    fucking love the gaslight anthem

  79. M.... ....

Personally I love this song played by Gaslight. It doesn't matter if it isn't their original song - it is performed brilliantly and sounds amazing. No one seems to complain about the Hendrix version of 'All Along the Watchtower'.....

  80. M.... ....

its def the same music and structure, but passing that stuff around is what folk is about. Everyone steals from everyone else. Even Dylan copped whole song structures this way

  81. s.... ....

love it!! gas light are the new E street band.

  82. M.... K....

HA, alright! no worries then! ^_^

  83. N.... J....

I'm sorry. I acutally responed to the wrong comment. I was trying to respond to the person who called this "retared hick hillbilly shit" I totally agree with you and I am very sorry for that mistake!

  84. M.... K....

uh, what? It's awesome, but it's clearly a folk song.
Not a punk song. get over YOURself and realize that music can be good without being punk, and that artists can branch into other genres.

  85. N.... J....

    get over yourself

  86. M.... K....

    awesome song, but not punk!!

  87. g.... ....

how is this a punk song?

  88. r.... p....

Red sky in the morning sailors warning. Red sky at night sailors delight.
Wow...I've heard the saying but never heard it put into these terms!

  89. m.... ....

yesterday is chilled with my girlfriend on an pretty green grassfield in the sun and we listened to this song...a perfect moment

  90. K.... H....

Wow his voice is amazing, especially at 0.37 <3 x

  91. B.... .....

Totally, I still like Aiden but a lot of my friends have simply changed their minds but they always say they've ''grown up'' and it just feels patronizing, music is music whatever age you are.
    XxXx.

  92. s.... ....

everyone should check out his myspace, if you hav'nt allready, his solo shit is AMAZING

  93. k.... ....

what is right is that both bands are amazing

  94. J.... C....

they opened for against me! on their US tour fall of 2007.

  95. C.... C....

JUSTICE4NO1, sometimes it's not a case of growing up, but more about developing tastes ^^

what we think as good music changes as we grow older right?

  96. W.... ....

Holy crap this is a good song...

  97. J.... P....

Dont forget Tim Barry of AVAIL.......
