Gaslight Anthem, The - Dark Places Lyrics

If I thought it would help, I would drive this car into the sea.
If the fire and the smoke and explosions could speak for me.
If the words that I used to try to explain
How something inside of me started to break.
Ah, but one by one my words just got in the way.

And how many nights did I crash against the waves
With my head going under?
How many days did I spend trying to see it your way?
If you try you'd remember.
I changed a change and kept on saying,
"One of these days something inside's gonna break.
And we won't get it back now, baby" (something's gonna break.)

If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart.
(If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart)
And if I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart.
(If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart)

All of the things that I tried to explain,
How something inside of me started to break.
We were living proof, one by one we drifted away.
One by one we drifted away.

And time after time there were things that would scare me to tears,
While you called me haunted.
I paced around the bed where you laid.
One of these days baby, something… (something's gonna break)

And if I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart.
(If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart)
And if I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart.
(If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart)

All of the things that I tried to explain,
How something inside of me started to break.
We were living proof, one by one we drifted away…
Drifted away…
One by one and day by day,
I became the dark in the places where you live.

We were living proof, one by one we drifted away.
One by one we drifted away.
We were living proof, one by one we drifted away.

When you're in it, you don't see it. Toxic relationships hold blinkers to those involved. This song is the anthem for those people. I hope you get there with the right people everybody and everything falls into line for you. It did for me x

  6. J.... L....

First time I listened to this song I was really floored. The lyrics really hit home.

  7. M.... G....

    Awesome

  8. B.... B....

I just wanna say "One by one and day by day, I became the dark in the places where you live" is some next level lyrics.

  9. J.... H....

one I found in a field full of flowers,
a shimmering ocean color in your eyes,
leaving my mind behind to learn more of your worlds,
every tree more beautiful than the one before,
must be a dream that I dreamt while awake

  10. b.... h....

Omg more people to to find them this is amazing

  11. L.... I....

this song hits home. absolutely brilliant guys!

  12. T.... ....

    Best song of Get Hurt.

  13. T.... C....

this song hits home for so many people trying to save a relationship that just isn't working. love can tear us apart and, sometimes, no matter what you do, you're crashing into the waves.

    T.... C....

Tyler Caplan Yes, I completely agree.

  14. J.... W....

Having seen them play live, and having the opportunity to speak (however briefly) with the other bands they were touring with, this album is more meaningful than their previous work. It sounds more personal, and is far more raw than the previous albums. Add the fact that he recently divorced, began a separate musical project to experiment with new sounds, and you get a very different sound, from a very different man. It seems like Brian has gotten tired of telling the stories of "Maria" or "Virginia" and decided to start telling his own stories. I loved "American Slang" and "The '59 sound", and I loved "Handwritten", they will always be my favorite band... But they can't remain static. All good things will, inevitably, change. Realistically speaking, there will come a day when these guys will not be making music anymore, and all we will have will be these songs. Let's enjoy what they created, rather than compare it to the past.

    J.... W....

Couldn't agree more. the other albums were solid and are amazing in their own ways. listening to them now compared to get hurt, it does seem like they were more indirect stories. this album has so much heart and soul oozing out of it and it's very clear what the songs are about. have mercy is my favorite

  15. J.... M....

I'm a death metal and stoner/doom metal type of guy, but this band has a special place in my heart. They are so cohesive as a unit live, and they have such a fresh sound, they really proved to me that true rock and roll isn't dead. If you have not seen this great band live you are truly missing out.

    J.... M....

    Fuckin right.

    J.... M....

@Jordan Mayer In the same boat lad, just can't hate this band!

    J.... M....

+Jordan Mayer your comment really touched me. especially the "they really proved to me that true rock and roll isn't dead".i fell in love with the band the moment i heard American Slang about 4 years ago...

    J.... M....

@Chinedum Osakwe Thanks, i know right, this band and a few others such as FIDLAR and All Them Witches and the black keys have all proved that rock is still alive and well. Its a genre that can never be killed off due to the unity of its fans.

    J.... M....

+Jordan Mayer true this, & this is also how i feel about Dax Riggs over everything, check it, i bet you'll be into his stuff c:

  24. M.... A....

I remember when I first properly listened to this song. I was going through a pretty emotional time with my family and with my love life. And I remember I just started bawling like a fucking baby. And it makes me well up when I listen to it now.

Knowing that there's someone somewhere out there that's feeling just like me makes me feel a lot less alone, I suppose.
Thank you Brian and co. for creating the most relevant album ever!

  25. D.... B....

The Backseat part 2 and I love it!

  29. C.... ....

    C.... ....

Ohhh what a insult lmao like I said ignorant kid in mommas basement

    C.... ....

    @dick butkiss
You're the one wasting your time talking shit. LOL

    C.... ....

@BonBon But, put into context these songs are a lot stronger.

    C.... ....

Dude. Selected Poems. Listen to the lyrics...they're brilliant.

    C.... ....

Opinions are like assholes, everyones got one. I love this album and connect with it on a personal level. Do not assume your view is universal, your opinion is just that, an opinion.

  30. m.... ....

my god this song is so good it hurts! That chorus...amazing.

  31. D.... P....

Is it just me that gets a vibe that this is a follow up to The Backseat?

    D.... P....

Kind of. It feels like an older, wiser "grown up" Backseat, if that makes sense.

    D.... P....

@david xxv when they stopped by us (minneapolis) They ended with Dark Places. Full setlist here http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-gaslight-anthem/2014/first-avenue-minneapolis-mn-43ccf7df.html

  32. T.... U....

    Thank you.

  33. E.... R....

Everything Brian Fallon touches turns into gold.!!
a couple of Molly and the Zombies songs would fit in so nicely on his album like long drives

  34. s.... ....

The competition for "Album of the Year 2014" is officially over!

  35. M.... S....

This and Stray Paper are far and away the best tracks.

  36. L.... P....

Brian Fallon always seems to say things that reach deeply into what I'm feeling, and I am incalculably grateful that The Gaslight Anthem lets me shout in the car without it being totally quiet.

  37. w.... ....

Sounds like a blast from the past. Like 28 year old Brian made a guest appearance. I think it's the bands way of saying "don't worry, we're still gaslight anthem" love this song!

  38. G.... L....

By far and away the standout track of the album. Incredible

  39. 2.... ....

this should have been one of the singles

  40. K.... K....

Dark Places, 1000 Years, Helter Skeleton, Red Violins, and Selected Poems has to be my favorite songs off this album. Great Job Gaslight Im very impressed with this album. Keep it up

  41. H.... M....

I am so not disappointed at all. Thank you, Gaslight.
