Gary Numan - Stories Lyrics
She sits in the corner
Where it's reasonably quiet
Drinking coffee with cream
Thinking stories of young love
She calls to the waiter
You can sit by my side
And I'll let you be friends with mine.'
The cafe is old
But the candlelight's new
She orders Beaujolais wine
And says 'I've thought of you too'
She whispers 'Isn't it odd
You remind me of songs
Like feelings I longed for
You haunt me inside
Sometimes I recall
Question mistakes
Who grew to nothing at all'
I hear voices that cry
And one of them's mine
All the things I could say
Are the reasons I can't
She says 'I've seen you before
In thoughts I call 'son'
Like an old film with sound
When the link comes undone'
The waiter is me
And the woman is you
And we are the story
Just like others I knew

So good to hear this live last night in Liverpool. Cracking song.
This track is just unbelievable. I love dance.
Dance is a class album.
Sounds-like-this-could-easily-be-one-of-the-tracks-on-The-Stranglers-"Feline"-LP,-very-similar-and-that's-a-huge-compliment.
Love words to this song loved numan 35 years
Out on purple vinyl in a few weeks :-)
Those lyrics are cool! So are the instruments!
Thank you.
The bass player on this track was Mick Prague from Australian band James Freud & Berlin.

As numan got got the best voice ever yes dont answer!
Gary Numan has made some great albums over the years. This one remains my favorite :D
Love this song....always have....brilliant album
An underrated album full of great songs.
Absolutely, his last great album.
love it still sounds new today
Very under-rated 'hidden little gem', Love the lyrics, they conjure up images of a Parisienne street cafe, beautiful girl sipping coffee catches the waiter's eye (Gary), they walk off into the sunset........................ Could almost have been a single
this should have been follow up to shes got claws
@andy morris Officially it's about an estranged mother and son unexpectedly reunited. But looking at the lyrics again I wonder if the woman hasn't simply mistaken the waiter for her son. Perhaps (?early-onset) senile dementia is setting in
- it's ambiguous as to who is speaking about hearing voices, but that stanza could support my interpretation.
Yes, this song would have made a good single - they could have released it to keep him in the public ear during the "round the world flight".
@Grithron2 he should have done a small-venue tour with Dance...its feel and theme would be drowned in a big hall....sure i remember reading at the time, this was going to be the single after Claws..he must have changed his mind
great track form a great album
What a tune, one of Numan's best ever tracks! 💜💙
